Jim Hardie arrives at his friend Tony Crandall's ranch Rainbow with a wedding gift for him. While dropping off the gift in the house, the door opens as Sheriff Hogan enters asking why Jim is in the house. Jim explains why he is there only to be told that Tony is dead and buried in the local cemetery. The sheriff says his death was accidental. At the cemetery Jim is approached by Leo Kinsman, the local attorney, who states he was the only person to attend Tony's funeral. Furthermore, Jim was left Rainbow, the rundown ranch. Jim learns Tony's neighbor Frank "Bully" Armstrong has two daughters that might have been his fiancee. He finds one of them at the ranch house and then finds a letter that explains some facts while making it seem more likely Tony's death was not accidental.
