Gerald S. O'Loughlin plays a former navel chief petty officer who made Henry Rush's (Ted Knight) time in the service less than happy. So Rush is pleased to see how far his tormentor has fallen. Frank is now a mere doorman reduced to opening doors and hoping for tips. Rush's wife suggests he bury the hatchet and invite Frank (O'Loughlin) to dinner. Frank reluctantly agrees but only if he can bring Carol with him. Not a problem for Rush until he discovers Carol is a he and thus Frank is gay. What follows is some awkwardness and some flat gay jokes that earn only minimal laughter. And yet by the episode's end Henry Rush has grown as a human being as his compassion is extended to include Frank. Considering this was 1984 and Ronald Reagan was in the White House, I don't want to say how amazed I was at the content of this episode (I was) but rather disappointed that 30 years have passed and as a country we have become so divisive and hostile. What happened?
