As a war correspondent Floyd Gibbons was with the Fifth Marines at the Battle of Belleau Wood. He lost his left eye while trying to rescue a wounded Marine. Gibbons was erroneously reported killed in action. An US Army Censor, who knew Gibbons at least by reputation, released the story without censoring it. The rules at the time forbade the explicit mention American military units. Gibbons' account lavished praise on the Marines. This pass inadvertently incited an increase in Army-Marine animosity that lasted through the Vietnam War.
