Flint is scouting for an open pass as cold weather and snow are closing in on the wagon train. He is ambushed by a man wanting his horse and is wounded before he kills his attacker. He continues on but when he encounters a group of Shoshone Indians, he is wounded again and loses his horse. A woman finds him and drags him back to her cabin where she nurses him back to health. However, she wants to trade Flint to the Shoshone for money and passage out of the wilderness. Adams sends Hawks and Wooster to track down Flint but although they find the cabin and talk to the woman, Annie Griffith, she denies Flint is there or has been seen. Adams is facing a possible mutiny on the wagon train as Cleve Colter pushes to turn back. Annie learns Flint killed her husband and although Flint doesn't realize it, she has a change of heart.
