Quotes

  • Beth Pearson : Just what is it about me that's so startling to you gentlemen?

Major Seth Adams : Well, I'm sorry, Ma'am. No offence intended. We, you see, you remind us of somebody.

Beth Pearson : Well, my name is Beth Pearson if that's any help to you.

Major Seth Adams : Y'see, Ma'am, this person you remind us of passed away four years ago.

  • Charlie Wooster : What happened to you? Your watch stopped or something?

Major Seth Adams : What's that supposed to mean, Charles?

Charlie Wooster : Well, you shaved this morning. How come you're shaving again before you go to bed?

Major Seth Adams : Charlie, how come you're standing right there in that particular spot?

    Charlie Wooster : Why?

Major Seth Adams : 'Cos that's the spot where I was gonna throw my pan of water.

[the Major gives the advice after the act]

  • Major Seth Adams : Well, I'll be.

Charlie Wooster : I told you there was just not one war that would kill the Major.

Bill Hawks : It's good to see you, Major, real good.

Major Seth Adams : It's good to see you, Bill, Charlie.

Charlie Wooster : You know they had you down as missing in action. I knew they was wrong.

Major Seth Adams : Seems like I didn't know much of anything for quite a while, Charlie.

Bill Hawks : How bad is it, Major?

Major Seth Adams : Well, they tell me I'm healing up pretty good now, all except my legs. A few weeks ago they were talking about cutting them off. But I didn't like that idea.

  • Major Seth Adams : A fella in my shape doesn't have any right to think or guess especially about the person who wrote those.

  • Beth Pearson : I can just imagine what a shock it would be to me if suddenly I were to see someone who resembled my late husband.

Major Seth Adams : Y'see, Ranie and I were never married. We should have been.

Beth Pearson : Was it very long ago?

Major Seth Adams : No. Yes. I don't really know. It was just the beginning of the war. I guess the war was the reason Ranie and I didn't get married.

  • Major Seth Adams : Y'know it's really amazing how much you resemble Ranie Webster.

Beth Pearson : If you'd rather not talk it, I'll understand.

Major Seth Adams : That's all right. I just have a feeling you are a great deal like her in other ways too. She was the most understanding woman I ever met. Except for one.

Beth Pearson : You would like to talk about her, wouldn't you?

  • Beth Pearson : Just look at those stars.

Major Seth Adams : Not nearly as beautiful as what I'm looking at.

Beth Pearson : You wouldn't be trying to tell me that you like me?

Major Seth Adams : I'm trying to tell you a lot more than that, Beth.

  • Beth Pearson : Seth, I'm scared, don't leave me. Please don't leave me.

Major Seth Adams : I won't leave you, Beth, I won't leave you. Ever.

  • Bill Hawks : You're going to stay with Mrs Pearson, ain't you?

Major Seth Adams : Reading my mind again, huh. You think more like I do than any man I know.

  • Ron Pearson : She's unconscious.

Major Seth Adams : Don't touch her.

Ron Pearson : Keep your hands off.

Major Seth Adams : I said don't touch her.

Ron Pearson : What right have you...

Major Seth Adams : The slightest move might kill her. I'm afraid she's got a broken neck.

Ron Pearson : How would you know? You're not a doctor.

Major Seth Adams : No, I wish I was right now. We'll be as careful as we can. WON'T WE?

    Ron Pearson : Why, naturally.

  • Major Seth Adams : I can't believe the Good Lord's gonna expect me to go through that again. There must come a time a man's gotta right to put his own feelings first. This is that time.

  • Beth Pearson : Major Adams, Sir, would you please kiss me.

Major Seth Adams : Ma'am, it will be a pleasure.

  • Major Seth Adams : Ranie, Ranie, I knew you'd come back to me, Ranie. Ranie, Ranie.

  • Bill Hawks : Sure you don't want me to drive, Major?

Major Seth Adams : No, thanks, Bill. I don't think that's necessary. That young fella up on that seat there has become pretty much of a man.

  • Major Seth Adams : All right, Ron, let me put it another way. You need me here. This is one of the wildest stretches in the whole West, right here.

Ron Pearson : I can take care of Mother by myself.

Major Seth Adams : Can you? Look up there on that hill. Those are Apaches, Ron. They're just sitting there, waiting and wishing, wishing they had your horses and your rifle and your wagon and everything in it. And there's only one reason they don't come down here and take 'em. So if I was you, I'd put my personal feelings aside for the moment, and be goldarn glad that I've made friends with their chief, and that we've still got a treaty that they respect.

  • Beth Pearson : Ranie: Seth, Tell me about us. Tell me about California.

Major Seth Adams : Never seen anything like it. It's fresh and clean. There's strength in the air yuo breathe. We'll build a house, Ranie, a good house facing the West. When you walk outside in the morning, there'll be the ocean, blue as far as you can see. And all you have to do is look back over your shoulder, there's a line of mountains as high as you can see. They're beautiful mountains. They keep you warm and safe.
