At the beginning, Major Adams and Bill notice smoke on the other side of a hill and go to see who is there. When they get there, Danny is cooking over a fire, but there is no smoke.
At the end of the Danny Benedict Story , Danny plays "America The Beautiful" on the violin. The music wasn't written until 1883, the poem on which the lyrics were based was written in 1885, the song was first published in 1910.
Major Adams gives the kid advice that nobody but a complete fool would make camp at the bottom of a draw at this time of year. Then he just leaves and doesn't tell him why.
