- Christopher Hale: Mr. Clarke, I understand it rains a lot in England. Well, it just goes to show everybody's got problems. You've got rain, we've got Indians. Both can be most inconvenient.
- Duke Shannon: John Warbow is only half Kiowa, he's about the meanest Indian that ever barbequed a fur trapper. Unless, maybe, Warbow likes you?
- Christopher Hale: Everyone likes me, Duke.
- Bill Hawks: Why don't you tell that to Robert Harrison Clarke?
- Private Jamie: You be careful out there, Sergeant.
- First Sgt. Gault: Now, why didn't I think of that.
- Christopher Hale: What'd he steal? Those?
- Ike Truman: Well, I-I seen your magazines in the wagon. I was wanting to read them.
- John Bouchette: You know you can't read.
- Ike Truman: Well, I can figure out the pictures, can't I. What's wrong with that?
- Christopher Hale: We'll have a little talk, Mr Clarke.
- Robert Harrison Clarke: Will you tell your people that I will not tolerate people pawing through my luggage.
- Christopher Hale: Mr Clarke will not tolerate you pawing through his luggage. John, why don't you take Truman over and see if you can open his throat with a little redeye.
- John Bouchette: It's been my experience out here: A man who thinks Indians are funny is most likely gonna die laughing.
- Christopher Hale: I see you found our friends. We were worried about them...
- John Warbow: They were very foolish.
- Christopher Hale: Foolish maybe, John. But they meant you no harm.
- John Warbow: Don't talk like a missionary, you know how I feel about that.
- Robert Harrison Clarke: You're standing in my light, do you mind?
- Christopher Hale: No,
- [after due consideration]
- Christopher Hale: I don't mind.
- First Sgt. Gault: Poor old
- [staked out and deceased]
- First Sgt. Gault: Thomas couldn't even win at poker.
- Robert Harrison Clarke: These are the government surveyors?
- John Bouchette: They didn't hire us for looks... I aint much for telling folks what to do but if you're fixing to go riding with us wearing them duds.
- Robert Harrison Clarke: Perhaps we should try and understand each other. I am not unacqainted with uncivilised countries and I don't require anyone to tell me what I should or should not do. I intend to stay here as long as it takes me to do the job I came for. I shall be no bother to you, I wish I could say the same for you. But I have grave doubts. Now, if you'll excuse me, I will do the job I came for.
- John Bouchette: My, my, that pretty sure know how to do with fancy things with words, don't he.
- John Warbow: Who said any of you are going back to your camp?
- Christopher Hale: Why not?
- John Warbow: All right, Chris.
- [a slow smile breaks through his pock-marked hard face]
- John Warbow: For old times.
- Christopher Hale: John. Peace.
- John Warbow: May we not meet again.
