Quotes

  • Lila Allen : I reckon I've come as far as I've a mind to. Is it against orders to stand here and talk a spell?

Ty Anderson : No, Ma'am. Captain Elder said we was to be especial polite to the womenfolk.

Lila Allen : That's right considerate of the Captain.

  • Lila Allen : Did you ever hear of one regulation that said anything about oatmeal cookies?

Ty Anderson : No, I reckon not.

Lila Allen : As a matter of fact I once knew a soldier about the same age as Sergeant Perks. Sent him cookies all the time. He used to write me letters telling me how much he enjoyed them. Especially on picket duty.

Ty Anderson : He did? Oh, he must have been a cavalryman. Us foot soldiers, well, we're different.

Lila Allen : No, the boy I was talking about was in the Infantry, just like you.

Ty Anderson : You mean that? I reckon that's where the best men were. Like Captain Elder and my Pa.

Lila Allen : Was your Pa in the Infantry too?

Ty Anderson : For over three years. He was a corporal. I bet you he would have even made sergeant if he hadn't been killed at Running Springs.

    Lila Allen : Running Springs?

Ty Anderson : Yes'm. It wasn't a very big battle. I don't reckon you ever heard of it.

  • Lila Allen : It's been a long time since I had a soldier appreciate my oatmeal cookies.
