Boyd stops a young artist photographing a car she'd set on fire, his encounter with the young woman leads to a cold case.
After a pretty ordinary pilot episode, Waking the Dead kicks off its first full series with a great first episode, in comes the fantastic opening music, memorable credits, and the proper setup of the cold case unit.
The story is particularly good, you feel for the character of Marina, but also can see how she's compulsive, and perhaps an annoyance to the team.
The relationships are fascinating, Boyd and Grace, Boyd and Mel, Boyd and Frankie, the one with Spencer would change a lot over the years.
Gritty, intriguing, compulsive viewing. 9/10
