Who's gonna clean this yellow goo off the walls?
Muldernscully8 May 2006
The Calusari is a chilling tell of a boy who appears to have evil in him. Deaths occur around him when he become upsets. The mystery and suspense stay at a high level during this episode. You're not exactly sure what to think of the boy and his grandmother's treatment of him. It's hard to believe the actor who played Charlie Holvey is the same boy who played Kevin Morris from season one's 'Conduit'. He does a fine job as the disturbed young boy. One thing that makes this episode fun is the introduction of Dr. Chuck Burks. He helps Mulder and Scully out from time to time with his expertise in unusual phenomenon. Chuck is a fun character. It's a shame we don't see him in more episodes. I also like the use of church bells in Mark Snow's music. It helped give it an ominous religious feel. This episode has a terrifying conclusion that might have you calling the Calusari over to your house.

The CaluSCARY
BreakingDawnx1 September 2008
Infamous for being the only ever X-files episode to be given the English '18' rating The Calusari is a captivating story of exorcism and demonic possession.

Featuring the young boy who also appeared on the season 1 episode Conduit , Mulder and Scully must race against the clock to understand why mysterious deaths keep taking place in a young boy named Charlie's presence. There's not much Mulder and Scully chemistry in this one ,so if thats why you watch the X-Files then skip this one. Because previous season 2 episodes have been so good , this one lets it down just slightly as you expect to see more action than you get.

The episode is well put together with a couple of disappointing moments where special effects let them down , but the ending is what makes the episode and landed it with the rating it bears today.

Warning: Spoilers
No matter how many times I see this one, I always get chills from the teaser for this one. There's something truly horrible about a poor kid dying just because his brother happens to be a bit of a jerk. Of course, this being The X-Files, there's a little more to it than that, but still... ugh, just horrible.

"The Calusari" does what The X-Files does best, which is to play with the familiar, the foreign and the totally alien. Without knowing much about Eastern European folklore, the references and the overall feel of the episode are convincing enough that the supernatural parts are that much creepier. The family drama is intriguing, and the fear of the mother is palpable and seems totally genuine. The scenes during the exorcism are fantastic, and the central idea - the notion of a child haunted by his twin - is quite genuinely disturbing. It's a little unfortunate in that context that this episode follows "Humbug" so closely!

Such a scary episode why the low ratings ??
NatashaJAmos201519 April 2019
I'm binge watching my way through the X-Files and I've been a long time fan since the beginning. I don't usually review.

This episode has always scared me. It's underrated and even though the idea has been used many times it's still scary and I recommend it.

Karen the psychristist from an earlier episode Irresistable makes another appearance .

Introduces Chuck Burke Mulder's go to guy for digital imaging and he'll appear in a few more episodes .

The Calusari the Limerick:

A little boy has an evil twin

Who really likes to commit sin

He kills his little brother

Then his father and grandmother

Till the mom lets the Calusari in.

What a great episode. This is one of the scarier and darker episodes on the show in my opinion. Simply put, the episode seems to combine elements of The Exorcist and Romanian superstition. Members of a family start dying, and upon investigation, Mulder thinks that there is a ghost doing it. Soon however his suspicions turn to the boys grandmother who is an old Romanian lady who is constantly performing strange rituals such as tossing chicken guts on the roof. When she then dies, suspicion turns toward the little boy Charlie who is not a typical happy child. He is wonderfully played by a creepy little kid who you may remember from Season 1's Conduit. We finally find out that he had a twin brother who was stillborn and who now is apparently acting as a sort of evil twin doppleganger ghost. Just a really good creepy episode. 9 out of 10.

Good,but not great!

Well, seeing as I am from Romania,I could hardly wait for this episode!I saw The X-Files when I was a child, back in the '90,and started watching them again this summer, and I remembered there was an episode about my country!I think this episode was fairly good, and it might seem excellent to you if you're not a Romanian!I think they should have paid more attention to what the actors were speaking, and how they were speaking! It was Romanian, but it was very poorly pronounced, and it kind of took the credibility of this episode, for me at least! If they were indeed Romanians, especially the old lady, they wouldn't have had that accent!Anyway, once you get past that, the special effects are good, and the storyline is also captivating! If you're not from Romania, you won't even notice the accent!

Wonderfully creepy
aliholly-6281910 March 2019
I love how all of the bad reviews are from people that say "I'm Romanian." Ok, you want a cookie or something? They try to discredit the episode, based on its title, by saying Calusari are "a dance group," but a very quick google search shows the word also means "a secret society." Another reason people, and by people I mean these Romanian experts, say this episode is bad is by nitpicking the accents and language. I'm Bostonian but I don't hate on every actor ever who has tried and clearly failed to imitate a Boston accent. That's the stupidest reason to dislike a film or tv episode. I'm also a medical professional and don't nitpick all of the medical innacuracys either. Lastly, we get it. Apparently every film or tv episode ever involving demons copies The Exorcist. I don't see you writing movie scripts darling. People expect far to much from entertainment. The story isn't slow, the acting is fine, except for David Duchovny's, it's creepy and exciting. Have fun and move along to the next episode.

It feels very familiar.
Sleepin_Dragon3 October 2020
Calusari is a solid episode, as with the previous episode we get a very dramatic opening sequence, harrowing moments as we see that little boy run off. There are some creepy elements, Charlie is a great character, and at such a young age, Joel Palmer is excellent.

My annoyance here is the stereotype with Romanians, well of course they're all superstitious, with mothers that you could place in the seventeenth century, that stereotype was done to death.

On the plus side it very much does have some real horror tones, at times it's quite explicit.

Didn't we have twins in the previous episode?

I suppose I shouldn't be so critical, this format has been used in tonnes of horror films since, it's just not for me I guess, 6/10.

Scully: Did you learn about wind in kindergarten?
bombersflyup1 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The Calusari is about Mulder and Scully investigating the mysterious death of a two-year-old boy, at an amusement park.

An excellent episode, engrossing and clever. The opening sequence equally memorable as the superb ending. The title is those who perform the exorcism, that Mulder seeks out to put an end to it. The kid actor Joel Palmer, terrific. Vibuti, the holy ash present at the crime scene. No idea how I retained that information before Chuck said it, heh. I like Bill Dow's appearances throughout the series, though brief. Not sure where the Munchausen by Proxy comes in though. Duchovny's disturbed looks during the exorcism are classic.

Neither innocence nor vigilance may be protection against the howling heart of evil.
alexandercappelli20 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
"Neither innocence nor vigilance may be protection against the howling heart of evil." - Fox Mulder.

Episode 21, 'The Calusari', written by Sara B. Charno, directed by Michael Vejar. Monster of the week episode count, 31. Charno's second script borrows heavily from films like 'The Exorcist' (1973) and 'The Omen' (1976) which challenge the traditional archetypal villain, in some cases the personification of the Devil, by having a child embody this evil. This can be highly effective at terrifying audiences, as the juxtaposition of innocence and purity, that we associate with a child, with the malevolent and destructive force of pure evil, can be very unsettling. At the same time however, this concept can easily become comical. The 'evil child' trope is often unsuccessful at being genuinely scary since the execution of the idea is riding so heavily on the performance of an often inexperienced actor. The question here is where does 'The Calusari' fall in it's attempt at dramatic horror? For the most part it sticks the landing and despite sometimes missing the mark it's largely successful even though it's wholly unoriginal. This was the only X-Files episode in the life of the series to receive a UK '18' rating for featuring the death of a small child and the overall disturbing nature of the premise. Joel Palmer returns once again to the series to play the 'devil child', he was featured in season one's forgettable entry, 'Conduit'.

The episode begins with a boy, Charlie (Joel Palmer) witnessing his little brother walk on to the tracks of an amusement park's tour train while following a runaway balloon. He is killed and his death ruled an accident. However Charlie's grandmother fears that the boy is cursed, death follows him and she is desperately trying to expel the evil she believes originated from Charlie's father. The grandmother calls for the help of the Calusari mystics to help her perform ancient rituals in the boys home. Charlie's mother is Romanian, as is the grandmother, and it's a little odd that the writer would choose the word Calusari for these men as Romanian 'Călușari' were traditional acrobatic dancers. This was one of the criticisms for the episode brought up by Romanian fans. Semantics aside, the group attempt to perform rituals to exorcise Charlie. They are ultimately successful but not before the evil claims several lives.

The aforementioned tightrope of comedy and horror that this episode traverses holds steady for the most part though there are a few slips here and there. One such moment that was written to be scary but comes of as funny is when Michael, Charlie's twin brother who has materialized from the dead, says "What are you doing Mummy?" They pushed a little hard with this line and it comes off as a forced attempt at being creepy. Yet at other points in the episode Palmer is actually quite convincing, such as when he is violently resisting the exorcism or when his twin is about to stab Scully, he manages to pull off a credible menacing presence, no small feat for a child actor.

The opening and closing sequences are probably the two strongest moments in the show, and this helps carry some of the dead weight and loose ends that were not thoroughly explored during the course of the episode. Such as the grandmother's claims that the father is the devil or a demon. This is never explored to any great length, we start to get a sense at one point that there may be some truth to this claim but it's left wide open after his 'accidental' death at the hands of the garage door opener motor. The grandmother claims at one point that the boy is evil because the father is evil, but then later on we learn that the evil actually stems from the fact that Charlie's twin brother Micheal died at birth and the proper soul separating ceremony was not performed. Supposedly this mean that death will now follow Charlie throughout his life. What, if anything, this has to do with her earlier accusations against the father is underdeveloped. A positive addition is that we're treated to the first appearance of Chuck Burk (Bill Dow) whom Mulder will call upon at various times throughout the series for his unique take on all things paranormal. This is a character I always felt could have been given more screen time and was unfortunately under used.

An aspect that I enjoyed about the climax was that both Mulder and Scully witness equally terrifying and unexplained events. Mulder watches as the evil force is drawn from Charlie's body as he thrashes around in the hospital bed. Looking for perhaps the first time genuinely frightened and confused by what he is witnessing. At the same time Scully enters the family home to find the mother pinned to the ceiling and Michael advancing upon her with a knife, only to vanish in to thin air moments later leaving behind a small pile of ash, or 'vibhuti' the residual sign of spiritual energy. There is a sense at the end of the episode that both agents have experienced something profound, they can neither can fully explain or understand it and both have been moved by the event. The fact that we don't see a conversation between them were Scully tries to use science to justify the occurrence gives the impression that for once she can't explain it in any rational sense. It's about time.

Saved by the very satisfying conclusion
SleepTight6666 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This episode reminds me a lot of Season 1's 'Born Again'. It suffers from plot holes, weak acting, weak writing and a couple of dull moments.

But it is saved by the very satisfying conclusion and cool and creepy atmosphere.

The episode is a decent twist to the Exorcist story, with some really creepy and disturbing deaths. And I am mostly referring to the teaser, where Charlie's two-year old brother is killed by a little train. It's disturbing because it was a cute little innocent child.

I am going to give this episode *** stars for the brilliant finale of this otherwise not-so great episode.

That was one of my favourite x files episode, i really love it, it actually gave me goosebumps. The boy was really great playing the crazy dead brother :D The ending scenes when they were killing the evil spirit was amazing :D Actually its what made the episode great, The actress who played the mum was meh, anderson and David didn't do anything special, but the boy and the wacky grandma were really good, as for the group of magician(( don't know what to call them)) were doing a good job, i thought that they were real magicians, this episode is in my list for the x files best episodes, may be not the best x files episode but it was fun and scary, kudos,,,

Evil twin....

Warning: Spoilers
The X Files used the creepy possessed child trope very well in this episode. Much of the praise has to go to the young actor who played the dual roles of Charlie and Michael, he really had that Damion esque quality about him. Also props to the actress who played the grandmother with a real sense of menace about her although in the end it was revealed her intentions were good.

Scullys sceptical approach worked in this episode for me as there was a lot of convincing evidence that the crime itself was indeed committed by somebody suffering from Munchausen By Proxy syndrome. I get it was originally her job to counter Mulders arguments with science and fact but she was a little naive at times with this approach considering the many many unexplained things she had seen by this point and would go on to see.

Horribly Perpetuated Stereotypes
ioanaspam14 January 2012
I love the x-files... the show, the movies, the actors/characters. I am a HUGE fan and would rate any other episode anywhere between an 8-10. However, as a Romanian, this episode makes me SO MAD, because it perpetuates stereotypes about Romania that are not even based on semi- facts.

First of all people who are very superstitious in Romania are so because they are VERY very old school Orthodox Christian, not pagan. This whole American fascination with "Dracula" (who was NOT a blood sucking vampire, just an evil ruler who used to kill many people), turned into "Romanians believe in exorcisms and evil spirits of the Old Religion"... there is no OLD RELIGION Romanians believe in, unless you are talking about Orthodox Christianity. MUCH more likely than an exorcism, an "old school" superstitious Romanian would call in the local priest to do some ritual cleansing of the home by PRAYING away the spirits in every room with a dash of holy water and a cross or icon placed in each room, not with weird voodoo rituals involving dead chickens...

Second of all, the Calusari are DANCE groups!! Cal means horse, and Calusari are "horse-men/riders" who dance away evil spirits during Spring Harvest rituals. They do not chant or make potions, they DANCE! Do any search on google images and you will see Calusari dressed in traditional Romanian costumes dancing away--they are known for their HUGE high jumps that makes it seem as if they are flying. Needless to say they do not huddle in back rooms performing exorcisms and making up concoctions of strange herbs to cure people. Also they are usually young nimble men (who can jump high!) not old men with long beards who basically look like Orthodox Jews with their tall black hats and black suits... No old Romanian man dressed in Romanian folk clothes looks like the "Calusari" in this episode... These characters were just made to look like Orthodox Jews for some bizarre reason (another wonderful stereotype perpetuated by this episode-...) Further, when they perform this dance in Romania now, it's because folk dance is a tradition at Spring festivals, not because people actually believe the dance cures them of "evil"...

Third of all, none of these people looked like they were or spoke Romanian! I am fluent and I struggled to understand what they were saying, once in a while I would catch phrases and words, horribly pronounced. But I am almost 100% positive that as the men were chanting and supposedly let out spirits they were not speaking Romanian, unless they were doing it backwards and in pig-Latin.

Despite my love of everything X-files, I am rating this episode a "1" for the mess it made of understanding anything related to any Romanian tradition... I honestly could not even pay attention to the story line or evaluate if it was good or bad because at every turn in the episode there was another element that just made me so mad about how they were portraying Romania or its traditions :/

Calm down folks, and enjoy the episode!!
Umarfilmgeek16 May 2021
So, what I have learnt from this episode is...

Romanian people appear to be very sensitive, serious and patriotic lol.

I was wondering why this episode has a lower rating than what it deserved. It is a brilliant episode about demons and exorcisms with disturbing themes thoughout.

It has so many 1* ratings because of proud Romanian people hating the episode due to "bad Romanian accents" and negative portrayal of Romanian cultures.

I respect all cultures and countries and its nice that you are so passionate but chill out guys. Its a fiction TV show, not a documentary about Romania.

I'm British Asian, and I have seen so many horrible portrayals of British or Asian accents and cultures but I never take it so seriously. Why? Because so many of the actors that play the characters or producers, writers and directors who create the show aren't actually British or Asian. So I just laugh it off and focus on the content of the show instead and this episode is fantastic. Scared me as a kid and throughly entertains me now.

Enjoy it.

Great episode showing to defeat evil you can need mysticism

Warning: Spoilers
There was a movie with similar topic , an evil kid. It remembered me that movie which I had seen years ago.

In this movie, we see ezoteric people those speak in different language. We see Romanian culture. And calusari. According to wikipedia: a Romanian fraternal secret society who practiced a ritual acrobatic dance known as the calus.

Scully saw another non-scientific event and I hope she won say again "but it cant happen according to scientific rules.".

And I wonder how they wrote for reports. For latest episodes, we did not see how scully wrote reports. For this case, they cant write "the evil soul killed". It must be hard for scully :)

In the end, those sayings were really hard and nice:

"Neither innocence nor vigilance may be protection against the howling heart of evil."

They can be protected against even aliens but not against those spiritual things.

"The evil is still here."
classicsoncall3 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Not for anything, but the actor playing the twin brothers Charlie/Michael Holvey (Joel Palmer) was sensational during the exorcism scene when the Calusari were holding him down to get rid of his demons. I'd say as good as Linda Blair in "The Exorcist" but without the makeup. He actually did look pretty scary.

But as for the cut away scene back to the Holvey home where Michael was getting ready to put the hurt on Scully - why would Scully just lay there waiting for the kid to take his best shot? That seemed way out of character for her, but I guess it was a way for the writers to heighten tension, knowing nothing could happen to her for the sake of the show.

A whole host of ritual elements and symbols make for a creepy episode, and the comment from the senior Romanian elder to Mulder about the demonic entity knowing who he was made it sound like a return trip might be in order later in the series. It might have been interesting to test those waters again later on but I don't believe they ever did.

Even though this was one of your more somber X-Files, I had a comic reaction to that scene of Grandmother Golda (Lilyan Chauvin) doing the ritual ceremony in the dining room of the Holvey home the first time with The Calusari. Though a couple of roosters were involved, I couldn't help thinking about a song from one of my current favorite musical groups, The Zac Brown Band, when they wrap up their 'Foundation' album with the humorous tune - 'Sic 'em on a Chicken'. My mind works in strange ways sometimes.

First of all: Calusari are traditional dancers in some parts of the Romanian country(and they are dressed in an traditional outfit, just goggle it and you will see what I'm talking about) , second its true that things like this happened here and but the exorcism are performed by a priest(not any priest a true believer called monk, because things like this sadly but they are real) not witches things and by the way i think there are more witches in USA then in Romania.... (poorly and confusing).... But they try it so i give them credit for that................................................................

Any way best series ,love it

Same Evil Different Body
devonbrown-9064923 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Scary and entertaining episode. It had some similarities with the Satanist episode. As it addresses demonic activity and possession. I was impressed by the story and the character development. The innocent boy and his evil still born brother who was never really dead made a great story.

I felt as though the mother was very naive and vilified her own mother multiple times without seeing the value of her help. I also fell for the trap as she was doing way too much to point to her being behind the death of her step son and grandson.

I'm happy mulder did seek the council of the professional Calusari's to rid the world of this evil that will be gone for now. Albeit mulder is now known to this entity and seemingly will be back for him.

Was good to see scully get a sense of some non scientific paranormal activity. Hard to hold science as the utmost when you're choking 5 ft in the air against a wall by an invisible force.

A Return to Schlock
frankelee13 July 2023
This episode is reheated bad paranormal leftovers. Another weird power that murders the innocent vindictively, causes Mulder and Scully to investigate, mostly Mulder actually. Scully spends her time being skeptical and making, truly, moronic counter-suggestions to deflate everything Mulder comes up with. The idea of an actual medical doctor being that... unaware of how the planet they live on works seems unlikely. I mean, she honestly suggested a freshly filled helium balloon probably walked itself 50 yards across a county fair at a level height because of the wind. Because sideways motion would counteract the physical force of buoyancy. Do you know how much physics you have to take in college to get into med school?

She also wonders if ash spread all over a completely unburnt murder scene might be from faulty wiring, WUT? As they say Scully, where there's ash there's fire. Also props to the fictional garage door company for placing a "Reset" button on the door's motor, which is only reachable by climbing a ladder and sticking your head into the gears of the automatic door. Next episode they should introduce a car where in order to change the oil you have to shove your head into the crankcase.

Anyway, I don't want want to say these stories are tired, but I knew what the twist was around 10 seconds into the episode. It's neat they tried to draw some foreign culture into the lore, but it was all just so it could be put into service doing the same old awful thing. I mean, literally they had done a variation on this plot five times already by this point in the series.

This episode exists..
catalinafocuta2 January 2018
So, first of all, I just recently started binge-watching X Files but not because I never heard of, I did and I was always intrigued by it, just.. personal stuff Ok, so watching this episode I felt angry and sad because I am Romanian and I just couldn't follow the plot, but also amused af because I just can't see the connection. This one is just a sad, cheap reproduction of any films involving a rite of exorcism. As for the Romanian influence... An user said in another review that there are no old ways. Well, not officially. Romanian culture is a curious fusion between our religion, which is Orthodoxy and the various superstitions and myths based on the Slavic/Eastern-European culture. So, basically, we believe in God, we worship him, we are in our hearts Christians, except in the villages you will find legends about Sanziene, Ursitoare, Zmeu, Martisor... it is part of our mythology and we just can't let go of it... we don't have legends about gods or the creation of the world, like Greeks or Vikings have, but we do have these legends about people/creatures that eventually developed our folklore.

So how the hell did the writers of these series think it would be a very good idea to connect a mostly Catholic practice to some pagan symbols that I am pretty sure we don't even have? It is beyond my imagination but I guess this happens when writers are ignorant af and don't care about other peoples and cultures.

Also, I got three more things to say: 1) The Romanian actors were just awful. You just don't say some lines in a foreign language in such an awful accent considering the fact that you PLAY A ROLE IN A TELEVISION SHOW and, most importanly, you know that there are some pretty good chances this episode airs in the country that you used as inspiration. Just don't. 2) "The Calusari".... I just can't. They are absolutely nothing like who they really are. THEY ARE JUST DANCERS, THEY ARE NOT EXORCISTS . Of couse they couldn't just show up and start dancing around and Michael's spirit would have been gone, but... just why?? And the fact that Maggie spoke in English with them and they responded in Romanian... why?? because I'm pretty sure she knew Romanian... well, she and the writers and Mulder and Scully thought she knew... 3) Don't really want to be a party pooper, but here it is: In 1984, the political situation was really really messy. So the husband's job is not mentioned and I don't really think he could have been an ambassador. Even so, people did not have what to eat, mostly, and had restrictions on pretty much everything, including heat and transport. So how does an American government employee in Romania meet a Romanian woman who was just willing to leave everything behind, meaning a traditional and strict family who, based on the characters' description, was most likely living in a village far up in the mountains (because being such a fanatic meant just that)??? P.S: about the restrictions... yeah, our borders were closed. So she must have escaped somehow from the Romanian authorities, which is not something an American government employee would have risked.

As a conclusion, I think broadcasters were right when they rated it 18+ but not because of nudity/violence/whatever other reasons, but because this episode is so shameful and indecent by insulting a people's culture and making up some stupid stereotypes.

Disappointing
jessicutza21 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Okay okay the episode as a whole want that bad. It was suspenseful and eerie.

However, I, as a Romanian, am very disappointed. The actors who spoke Romanian should have practiced a bit more for their accents were completely unnatural and odd and a few times merely spoke gibberish.

Second of all the episode is title "The Calusari", which is quit misleading for as we Romanians know, Calusari are a certain type of dancers, NOT some people who "are responsible for the correct observance of sacred rites" that's bullshit.

But other than these disappointing factors, it was all right.

(SPOILER) Anyone remember Exorcist?
faustface21 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Taken out of context, this episode would probably have been a standard 7 out of 10, on a par with an average X Files episode. However, when compared to a certain other film, similarities make me think that the writers could have done a better job with originality. Admittedly, they did change a lot - events leading up to the exorcism are completely different - Romanian folklore instead of Catholicism, the Grandmother, the deaths leading up to the climax... In this, they did succeed in making an original plot. And the Romanian part of the storyline in general was very good. But for me, this cannot save the fact that the ending lets this episode down.

My opinion, of course. Feel free to disagree.
