Both The Lead & Supporting Cast Do Well
ccthemovieman-110 June 2010
A melodramatic suspense story is about a gunslinger who comes back to this small town to get back his ex-wife. They had separated and then she re-married but he still had the hots for her. Then he finds out they have a son, one he didn't know about......and a nice kid, to boot. Now, the gunslinger - who is actually portrayed as a nice guy early in the show - wants both the woman and the kid. The obstacle: the man she re-married is the town marshal.

When the you-know-what-hits-the-fan and everyone is aware of what's going on, including the kid, things begin to happen.

Three known movie actors have the three leads: John Ireland as the marshal; Stephen McNally as the gunslinger and Audrey Totter as the wife and former wife! I loved the subtle expressions of surprise on McNally's face a handful of times in this story. He was great to watch.

Jimmy Baird plays the kid. He reminded me of Bobby Driscoll, looking and sounding similar to the latter in the 1948 film noir, "The Window." Ralph Moody is interesting, too, in a supporting role. Moody acted right up to the day he died, at the age of 85. He was about 60 when he played this role, as a friend of the gunslinger..

Overall, a good episode plus the usual interesting introduction by host Dick Powell, who shows the different kinds of tricks gunslingers used "back in the day."

Return to Nowhere

Warning: Spoilers
Stephen McNally plays Steve Leader the outlaw gunfighter. He has arrived in town and greeted by a kid.

At the saloon he is quickly challenged to a gunfight. The man is not fast enough for Leader.

Marshal Harry Phillips has no time for gunfighters like Leader and wants him out of town. He Marshal will soon have other reasons to see the back of him.

Leader wants to be reacquainted with his woman Martha as he heard she had given birth to his child some years earlier. Leader wants to get to know his son.

Only Martha has married the Marshal who has raised the boy as his own. He was the kid who greeted Leader.

Martha wants to flee with her husband but the Marshal wants to stay and take in Leader.

It's a melodrama alright. Leader makes out he is reformed but the act does not last long in front of his kid.

I did think the ending was weak. The Marshal should had let Leader walk out of the town instead of a shootout. At least it gave a redemption arc to Leader.
