- Carlos Murrieta arrives in Los Angeles and is greeted by Sgt. Garcia. Carlos answers his questions sarcastically and refuses to answer personal questions. Diego is watching and helps Garcia deduce the man arrived from Argentina and is there to visit Jose Mordante. Jose shows Carlos an eagle feather, and Carlos shows him a jeweled crucifix called The Cross of the Andes. Carlos tells Jose a delivery from the Eagle will arrive at his tannery. They go into the tavern, where Carlos demonstrates his skill with a whip to Diego. A boy named Don Rodolfo arrives at the tavern, and proceeds to stare lovingly at the barmaid. Diego serenades them with a song about growing up and finding love. Carlos calls the barmaid over and makes advances. Rodolfo is offended and challenges Carlos to a duel. Diego sees that Rodolfo is no match and has Bernardo teach him fencing. Rodolfo has great difficulty learning and is clearly in danger of being killed, but refuses to cancel the duel. Rodolfo asks Diego to act as his second and he agrees. That night, Zorro goes to the inn and calls Carlos a coward for challenging a young boy. They duel in the tavern, and Zorro notices that Carlos has an eagle feather. Zorro wounds Carlos in the hand, but does not kill him because he wants to uncover the Eagle's new plot. Diego arrives to serve as Rodolfo's second, and learns the duel is canceled because Carlos is injured.
