- Sgt Garcia hangs posters offering a reward for the capture of Nacho Torres and Zorro, dead or alive. Capitan Monastario suspects Zorro is a friend of Torres, and orders Garcia to search for them both. Meanwhile, Don Diego shows Bernardo the secret passages in the de la Vega hacienda that lead to a cave where he hides his horse, Tornado. Diego visits the mission where Torres is hiding, and then informs his daughter, Elena, that her father is safe. Diego returns to the hacienda to find Monastario waiting for him. Monastario informs Diego he is searching for Zorro by asking all men of Zorro's height to try on the costume and fight with a sword. Monastario does not want to bother testing Diego, but Diego insists. Diego makes a fool of himself and convinces Monastario he is not Zorro. Monastario suspects Benito, a vaquero, of being Zorro instead. Benito is unable to give a decent alibi for his whereabouts the night Zorro rescued Torres. His friend tries to help by informing Monastario that Benito was courting Elena Torres that night, which Monastario uses as more evidence against him. Benito is arrested, and Elena is brought for questioning. She confirms Benito was with her the night Zorro rescued her father. Monastario then attacks Benito with a sword to prove he is Zorro. Benito is no match and is nearly killed. Diego arrives as Zorro in time to save Benito. Zorro escapes and is chased by the soldiers. Diego returns to his room through the secret passage in time to greet Monastario and the soldiers, who are searching the area for Zorro.
