Classic TV Xmas Countdown Episode #39
kgraovac20 December 2023
Edith's upset at God about Beverly's death and does not want to celebrate Xmas.

Part 2 isn't as good as the previous installment. There is a lot of filler in this episode to pad out the running time. Mike doesn't appreciate Archie's gift to Joey - a set of "KAR-AA-ATE MEN" action figures that were actually produced by the Aurora Toy Company in 1975. Archie seems to enjoy playing with them more himself. He actually is seen playing with them in two separate scenes.

In a funny moment, Gloria opens her robe to reveal a sexy nightgown that Mike gave her, which makes Archie very uncomfortable. It takes a tender talk with Mike to make Edith forgive God and join the family for Xmas dinner. She opens grace with "Dear God, E. Bunker here" which lightens the episode's mood and lets us know the old Edith is still underneath.

The conclusion has more frivolous moments than Part 1, but obviously you'll want to watch both. 7/10.

Mike brings Edith back

Warning: Spoilers
Jean Stapleton was excellent in this episode. The Edith Bunker character was a great example of someone not being what they appear to be. Edith had genuine intelligence and insight. She was foolish only for not showing her intelligence most of the time. Edith, in some ways, is quite opposite to Archie. She genuinely sees and accepts people for who they are, not the way they look. Edith doesn't really understand Beverly's whole dynamic, but this also doesn't matter to her. Edith loves Beverly as a friend. Archie and Gloria clearly don't understand what Edith's "problem" is, after Beverly dies. Only Mike understood and was able to bring Edith out of the "funk" she was in. Great scene between Jean Stapleton and Rob Reiner. In this episode, Gloria wasn't much smarter than her father. However, she redeems herself completely when she opens her robe, and little is left to the imagination.

Depressing, unfunny Christmas episode
Jimmy_the_Gent423 March 2018
Edith is still mourning Beverly and questioning God on Christmas day.

After killing off Beverly in part one, we are subject to a grieving Edith in part two, and seeing this once cheerful character so depressed is well...depressing. The writers were really hard on her character this season, after having her being the subject of attempted rape and now being a sad, cynical character. For a viewer like me, who loved her character and got so many laughs from her, it is torture to endure this miserable episode.

A crummy story stretched into 2 episodes
ronnybee211210 June 2021
What a lame,phony-baloney episode of a once-great show. They really added insult to injury by stretching a nonsensical story here into 2 episodes. The whole premise of the story is needlessly weird and reeks of desperation. It is beyond obvious that the show was quickly running out of gas at this point,as this has to be the worst 2-part episode of the whole series. Shame on them.
