Josh Klinghoffer stepped behind the drum kit for Pearl Jam once again on Wednesday, September 13th in Fort Worth, Texas, filling in for regular drummer Matt Cameron while he recovers from Covid-19. Watch the fan-shot footage below.
The Dickies Arena concert was the latest stop on Pearl Jam’s brief 2023 tour (grab tickets here), clocking in at 27 songs and 155 minutes. Notably, the setlist was heavy on songs from Yield, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The band played six tracks from the 1998 album, including the second performance of “Pilate” since 2018. They only played one song released after 1998, “Mind Your Manners” from 2013’s Lightning Bolt, and also performed covers of “Eruption” by Van Halen and The Who’s “Baba O’Riley.” Check out the full setlist below.

Deep inside every hard-hitting Pearl Jam grunge-a-palooza lurks a bluegrass hoedown dying to do-si-do. Eddie Vedder himself has proven this time and again by switching between the rock group and his own solo ukulele ballads. And now the long-running bluegrass quartet Iron Horse — who have strummed, chicken-picked, and mandolin-ified songs by Metallica, Van Halen, and Kanye West as part of Cmh Records’ Pickin’ On series — have imbued some extra twang into 12 Pearl Jam staples for Pickin’ on Pearl Jam, a new album out now.

Pearl Jam were about halfway through their special concert for SirusXM at Harlem’s Apollo Theater on Saturday night when Eddie Vedder’s mind went to Bessie Smith’s residency at the venue way back in 1935. “She played here four weeks in a row at one point,” he told the audience. “She was the singer, so she was probably standing right where I’m standing. We never got to be in this room before. The fact that we get to be on this stage is just remarkable.”

"It's kind of a mess, but that's the nature of foley." Step inside a "foley farm" up in Canada in this fantastic short Footsteps. From filmmaker Jeremy Benning, who usually works as a cinematographer, he directed this short film about an old friend. When he was growing up, Benning first met Andy Malcolm on a trip to a film house. Nowadays, Malcolm runs Footsteps Studios, known as "The Foley Farm", a big house an hour outside of Toronto, Canada, up in the middle of nowhere. "After reconnecting [with Andy] and visiting the facility, needless to say, Benning felt the urge to share this unique post-production studio with an audience." And now we get to enjoy a look at how these foley artists make sounds. They've worked on films like Blade Runner 2049 and Chappie, and they all seem so creative. Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this one.

Hit series “Gangs of London” is getting a new U.S. home.
The Gareth Evans-created series, which is produced by Pulse Films in association with Sister, will move from WarnerMedia-owned Cinemax to AMC ahead of its autumn debut. U.K. broadcaster Sky Atlantic will remain the European home for the show.
The first season already aired on Sky Atlantic — the home of many co-produced originals and U.S. shows on Comcast-backed pay-tv broadcaster Sky — back in April. Alongside the first season debut on AMC this fall, it will also air on Sky in Germany and Italy this summer.
The move is not altogether unexpected. Cinemax, sister network to HBO, revealed back in January that it was going to move out of the originals space, and that the brand would not be transferred over to the HBO Max platform. Variety understands Pulse Films received HBO and Cinemax’s...

Academy Award winner Alvin Sargent, who penned an extraordinary number of popular and critically successful films, from “Paper Moon” and “Ordinary People” to the “Spider-Man” sequels of the 2000s, died Thursday, his talent agency Gersh confirmed to Variety. He was 92.
Sargent won adapted screenplay Oscars for “Julia” in 1978 and “Ordinary People” in 1981 and was also nominated in the category in 1974 for “Paper Moon.” (He also received Writers Guild awards for all three films.) The writer worked with many of Hollywood’s top directors over the course of his career, including Alan J. Pakula, John Frankenheimer. Gareth Evans, the action visionary behind The Raid, will create TV series Gangs Of London for HBO’s Cinemax and Sky Atlantic...
The cult cinema myth of Gareth Evans’s innovative 2011 Indonesian action flick The Raid is still resonating some six years after its release, evidenced by the Welsh helmer’s backlog, which, amongst other high-profile projects, consists of writing/directing The Raid 3 and writing an American remake of The Raid. However, it appears that Evans will also be heeding the peak television call, having been tapped to create an action series called Gangs Of London.
See related The Bridge: an unforgettable Scandinavian drama
Evans will move forward with creating the multi-part action drama for HBO’s Cinemax and Sky Atlantic, reports Deadline. The series will be a co-production of HBO/Sky with Pulse Films and Sister Pictures, marking the first TV drama produced by the latter.

With The Raid: Redemption now in cinemas around the world or on the cusp or release, the names of its stars have been gaining traction, those names being Iko Uwais, the star and master practitioner of Pencak Silat, and the director, Gareth Evans, from the Welsh valleys, who grew up with a love of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Sam Peckinpah and John Woo. That love relayed itself into pursuing a career in cinema. Despite the misstep in 2006, with his little seen directorial debut, Footsteps, Evans never gave up on his dream until a moment of genuine serendipity when he found himself with the opportunity to direct a documentary about martial arts in Indonesia, an opportunity that lead from his Japanese-Indonesian wife. That lead to him making his next film, Merantau, where he started his work partnership with Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian, and the rest is history, as they say.

Like it or not, filmmaking is undeniably a director's medium. It wasn't always like that, of course: it was only the coming of the auteur theory in the 1950s and 1960s that popularized the idea of the director as the person responsible for all that was great and terrible about a picture. And while anyone who's worked in film knows that it's a collaborative medium, there's still no better way of seeing where the form might be going in the next few years than by looking at the directors who've been making splashes of late.
So, hot on the heels of our On The Rise pieces focusing on actors, actresses and screenwriters, we've picked out ten directors who've arrived in a big way in the last year or so, and look set for even greater things in the near future. Any tips of your own? Let us know in the comments section below.

If there's one word used to describe Asian cinema, it's usually "extreme". From South Korea we've had the hammer-wielding antics of Oldboy, whose star ate a live baby octopus, while from Japan we've had Takashi Miike's Ichi The Killer, in which a severed face hits a wall and slides down it – in one of the film's lighter moments. From Hong Kong comes pretty much anything with Jackie Chan in it, a martial artist who proudly boasts of having broken every bone in his 5ft 8" body. And now from Indonesia comes The Raid, an action extravaganza teeming with machete-twirling, gravity-defying psychos who slice, smash and crush anything that dares cross their path.

Prior to the 2011 Toronto Film Festival, the few people who knew Gareth Evans' name were aware of him at best as one of the dozens of directors worldwide trying to make their mark on the action subgenre. His first two films, Footsteps and Merantau, won him critical acclaim, but at the box office failed to fight their way into a crowded market of action movies. But as soon as The Raid knocked out critics and festivalgoers in Toronto last September, Evans became a talent to watch, and following celebrated screenings at Sundance and South by Southwest, what might have

Welsh director Gareth Evans hasn’t had a typical filmmaking career. His first film Footsteps, released in 2007 by Unearthed Films, didn’t garner him much attention but it did lead to directing a segment for a documentary on Indonesia. It’s there that Evans learned about the martial arts known as Silat and met soon-to-be muse Iko Uwais. After partnering together for their first film Merentau, Evans then re-defined himself as one of the most exciting up and coming action directors in the game with The Raid: Redemption. The film has been wowing audiences (including us) since it first started appearing in the film festival stratosphere last year at Toronto. The positive word of mouth and audience buzz has led to a steadfast interest and rightfully so since the film is a lightning bolt of adrenaline into a genre that has been woefully lacking.

It’s not even a year yet and there may be a remake on the horizon for “The Raid.” Screen Gems is in negotiations for a remake of the Indonesian action film “The Raid” after it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness late-night screening. The film won the Midnight Madness audience award at Tiff and received immediate word-of-mouth buzz. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a remake is possible after Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions picked up the North American distribution rights during the previous Cannes Film Festival. The deal allowed Sony to have an exclusive negotiating period and right of refusal on the remake of the film. The story is about a police Swat team that tried to arrest a mobster in a low-income apartment building. However, the police ended up facing violent goons who wield machetes and shoot machine guns. It’s becoming something of a regular refrain around here now: another new behind the scenes reel from Indonesian martial arts film Merantau gives yet another reason to be impressed. The eighth installment of these behind the scenes reels features a fresh wave of production, this batch set in the actual streets and alleys of Jakarta. Yes, director Gareth Evans continues to impress with the way he’s balancing story and action and, yes, star Iko Uwais continues to show that he’s got the goods as a fighter but we knew all of that already. What impresses here are some very complex and effective camera rigs that show Evans has definitely got a few visual tricks up his sleeve. Very nice.

The more I see of Gareth Evans’ upcoming Indonesian martial arts flick Merantau the more impressed I am. He’s locked on to a discipline seldom seen on screen - silat - found a compelling master of the form - Iko Uwais - and then built a solid cast and story around his stars’ skills. The film shows a nice balance of action and drama, character and ass-whuppin, and what we’ve seen of the cinematography and choreography so far has been impressive. Evans and co have been releasing regular behind the scenes reels from the film so far and while previous entries have showcased the performers, the choreography, camera tests and fight sequences with his latest entry Evans has opted to take a quieter route, taking us behind the scenes of the Sumatran leg of the production, when most of the dramatic roots of the film are laid down...

It’s been a few weeks since we last heard from director Gareth Evans and his Indonesian martial arts film Merantau but it’s hard to blame him, really, as he’s been buried deep in active production on the film with principal photography new entering its fourth week. Through the pre-production process Evans was posting regular weekly behind the scenes reels from the film - early efforts covered action choreography, camera and stunt tests and more - and this week, despite being busy with production, he found the time to put together another five minute behind the scenes reel, this one dedicated to introducing us to the film’s main characters and the actors portraying them. And not only does this give us a chance to understand what he’s going for in terms of the drama but most of the interviews were shot in the training room which...

No offense to practitioners of kung fu or, increasingly, muay thai but why is it that of all the martial arts in the world these two so thoroughly dominate the on screen world? We don’t even get karate films any more, never mind some of the smaller, lesser known arts and as much as I love me some kung fu and muay thai films I’d love to get a bit more variety on screen.
