Kenneth Branagh has spent much of his career bringing to life the works of British writers William Shakespeare and Agatha Christie. Now he will not get a chance to play a different famed scribe. Branagh will voice star as Charles Dickens in The King of Kings, a faith-based feature inspired by the lives of both Dickens and Jesus Christ.
Uma Thurman will voice star as Catherine Dickens, the wife of the author, while Jojo Rabbit‘s Roman Griffin Davis will voice the couple’s youngest son, Walter.
The King of Kings is inspired by “The Life of Our Lord,” a Dickens short story published in 1934, decades after his death. It follows Dickens and Walter as they — and their cat Willa — become immersed in the story of Jesus.

“I’m always waiting for something different, a different and new challenge,” reveals Anika Noni Rose. A worthy challenge arose in the form of Anton Chekhov, and the latest Broadway revival of his classic play “Uncle Vanya.” The actress had never performed in a Chekhov play before, but for her first Broadway role in 10 years, she “thought it was just time to do something for me that was going to be very different.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Rose portrays Yelena in the revival, who is wedded to the older and egotistical professor Serebryakov (Alfred Molina). At their rural estate, the glamorous Yelena expresses boredom and begins to question whether her life choices have led her to the right destination. When Yelena agrees to help Sonia (Alison Pill) discover if her feelings for Astrov (William Jackson Harper) are reciprocated, she unknowingly unleashes a fiery passion in him which overwhelms the estate.

The faith-based movie is in its final stages of production at Mofac Animation, as well as in performance recordings from the United Kingdom to the Hawaiian Islands – and numerous locations in between. The ever-growing, A-list cast will be announced at a future date. Mofac Animation is currently seeking potential distributors.

The King of Kings follows Charles Dickens and youngest son Walter as they bond over the famed author’s short story “The Life of Our Lord,” which was a holiday tradition in the Dickens household, though it was never published until 1934, decades after the author’s death. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is coming soon to Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Ahead of the new version of the Splash Mountain attraction, Disney has released some information on the adorable animal friends that will be introduced to guests on the attraction.
If you have been following along with news on the attraction, you’ve likely seen the image of the animal band. These are the animals we will be introduced to first in the attraction.
They will be playing a version of “Gonna Take You There” from “The Princess and the Frog” on their cute little “handmade” instruments and found objects.
Now let’s meet our band members (they are so cute!)

It's a testament to Disney's branding that mainstream audiences don't necessarily know who directed or starred in some of their better-known movies. Although many have seen the studio's 1950 animated feature "Cinderella," most audiences wouldn't be able to tell you that Ilene Woods played the title character, or that Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske, and Clyde Geronimi directed the film. Disney's "Aladdin" changed that with the casting of Robin Williams as the Genie. And the trend of hiring known screen celebrities, often not voice actors, to sell an animated feature to a broad audience went to a whole other level in the wake of DreamWorks' "Shrek." The advent of the internet also helped certain actresses become known among Disney fans. Nowadays, many adults know the names of the actresses who played characters like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, or Ariel the Mermaid.

The songs in the running for the 2024 Best Original Song Oscar are “It Never Went Away” (“American Symphony”), “I’m Just Ken” (“Barbie”), “What Was I Made For?” (“Barbie”), “The Fire Inside” (“Flamin’ Hot”), and “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Our current odds show that “What Was I Made For?” (31/10)) is favored to win, followed in order by “I’m Just Ken” (37/10), “It Never Went Away” (9/2), “The Fire Inside” (9/2), and “Wahzhazhe” (9/2).
This year’s roster of eight individual songwriters includes two pairs of former winners, each of which is associated with a “Barbie” song. Those who prevailed most recently are sibling duo Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell, whose bid for “What Was I Made For?” comes two years after they took the gold for the title tune from the “James Bond” movie “No Time to Die” (2022). James “Rhodey” Rhodes is a central character in the MCU—having appeared in eight films to date. The character has also featured in the miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021) and is poised to be the main focus in Armor Wars, which is in production now. And Don Cheadle is all set to wield the suit of War Machine.

Terrence Howard was supposed to keep playing War Machine in the Marvel movies, but he got replaced by Cheadle in Iron Man 2. It was partly due to decrease in pay. The actor didn’t get along well with Robert Downey Jr., which also added to the tension.

In just a few weeks, the 18th recipient of the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature will be revealed. While it is highly likely that the new winner will share a 3D visual style in common with nearly all of its predecessors, voters may instead decide to finally honor a fully hand-drawn movie for the first time. Fittingly, this monumental distinction would be credited to the legendary Studio Ghibli and its esteemed cofounder, Hayao Miyazaki, who suspended his brief retirement in order to make his dozenth film, “The Boy and the Heron.”
With an original plot that pointedly references the classic Japanese novel “How Do You Live?,” “The Boy and the Heron” is the 25th entry in Studio Ghibli’s animated canon and the company’s 10th film released after the creation of this Golden Globe category. Although four of its post-2005 productions earned Oscar notices for Best Animated Feature,...

With this year being the 100 year anniversary of The Walt Disney Company and the release of their latest animated title, Wish, we wanted to know what animated Disney film has been your favorite over the years? We stuck to films specifically released by Disney, so no Pixar titles are included. What struck me while compiling the list is the progression of their films. From the innocence of their early work to what many consider their heyday in the early 90’s to the emergence of the CGI era. For many of us, Disney films defined our youth, but which is the one that has remained with you all these years? As always, if you don’t see your favorite listed, please click “Other” and let us know what it is in the comments section as well as any fond memories you have of these timeless classics.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot points for “Wish,” currently playing in theaters.
Disney’s animated feature “Wish” features over 100 nods.
As the animation studio celebrates its centennial year, “Wish” pays homage to classic Disney films from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” to “Peter Pan,” “Sleeping Beauty” and more. Speaking with Variety, director Chris Buck explained they are “Disney nods” rather than easter eggs.
“We wanted to get the story to work first,” Buck says. “Once we had that, and we started going into production, we could start layering in all the nods.”
It wasn’t just fellow director Fawn Veerasunthorn and writer and Disney Animation chief creative officer Jennifer Lee helping to incorporate them. According to Buck, “every artist and every department was saying, ‘What if we tried this?'”

Spoilers for "Wish" follow.
The villains from Walt Disney Animation's feature films have traditionally been so striking and scary that the company has thought to separate them into their own brand. The brand tends to focus on Maleficent (Eleanor Audley) from 1959's "Sleeping Beauty," Cruella de Vil (Betty Lou Gerson) from 1961's "One Hundred and One Dalmatians," Ursula the Sea Witch (Pat Caroll) from 1989's "The Little Mermaid," the Evil Queen (Lucille La Verne) from 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," Captain Hook (Hans Conreid) from 1953's "Peter Pan," Hades (James Woods) from 1997's "Hercules," and Dr. Facilier (Keith David) from 2009's "The Princess and the Frog."
Occasionally, one might find Gaston (Richard White) from 1991's "Beauty and the Beast" in the mix or Chernabog from 1940's "Fantasia." These characters are all memorable for their scary designs, their misguided lust for power or destruction, their resentment, their hatred of the world,...

The co-director of Disney Animation’s Wish revealed whether the company would look into creating new 2D animated movies.
Wish sports a unique look. While it is 3D animated, its style is directly inspired by the many 2D movies that came before—though it's been a while since Disney Animation launched any 2D animated films. Nonetheless, Wish has received positive reviews thus far.
The last Disney Animation movie in 2D was 2011’s Winnie the Pooh and The Princess and the Frog before that. Since then, the studio leaned fully into 3D animation, producing hits such as Frozen, Moana, and Encanto.

Tim Burton is sharing his thoughts on AI getting inspired by his work for new creations. Earlier this year, BuzzFeed shared a piece where it prompted AI to “Tim Burton-Ize Disney Movies.”
The piece shared what Disney movies like Frozen, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog and others would look like if Burton had created them.
“They had AI do my versions of Disney characters!” the director said in an interview with The Independent. “I can’t describe the feeling it gives you. It reminded me of when other cultures say, ‘Don’t take my picture because it is taking away your soul.'”
He continued: “What it does is it sucks something from you. It takes something from your soul or psyche; that is very disturbing, especially if it has to do with you. It’s like a robot taking your humanity, your soul.”

Earlier this year, we lost Lance Reddick, a brilliant actor and commanding presence in film, television, video games, and beyond. When he wasn’t tending to the needs of assassins in the John Wick franchise or hiding secrets about a zombie apocalypse in Netflix’s Resident Evil series, he voiced Commander Zavala for Bungie’s long-running first-person-shooter video game franchise, Destiny. Sadly, now that Reddick is no longer with us, Bungie must appoint his successor. Thankfully, beloved actor Keith David is stepping into Zavala’s reinforced boots.
Bungie announced David’s appointment to the role on its official website, alongside a heartfelt message about Reddick and his contribution to the franchise:
Earlier this year, we lost Lance Reddick, the English-language voice actor of Commander Zavala. The passion and professionalism Lance brought to the role over the last decade was unmistakable and loved by all. Lance’s iconic voice led us...

Disney's magical live-action reimagining of "The Little Mermaid" hit theaters in May, and now it's finally heading to streaming. The remake, which stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, was one of the most anticipated movies of the year, especially after unveiling its sprawling, full-length trailer during the 2023 Oscars. Its cast also includes Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian.
Though live-action Disney remakes can sometimes be hit or miss, it seems the new "The Little Mermaid" has something everyone can enjoy (even adults who are fans of the iconic story). From exciting new songs to renditions of classics from the original 1989 movie, the rebooted movie breathes new life into a familiar tale that today's generation has fallen in love with - especially with Bailey at the forefront.

Whenever a person of color appears in a Disney project, like the new live-action iteration of “The Little Mermaid,” the racial vitriol automatically comes with the territory. Even in an age where we watched Meghan Markle become a literal Princess and a member of the royal family with our own two eyes, the heated conversation around race rages onward.
Whether it’s an album cover, film or TikTok dance, the racism, misogyny, and obsessive comments over what Black people can and can not become is exhausting and unnecessary. We live in a multicultural world where stories are no longer seen through a monolithic lens. With Disney features alone this issue has become even more pronounced. Remember when Brandy was Cinderella in 1997? Or when Princess Tiana hit the scene in “The Princess and the Frog” in 2009?

Three days after a barbarous playground attack left the lakeside town in grief and shock, and in an amphitheater facing the public park where the tragedy occurred, the Annecy Intl. Animation Festival inaugurated this year’s edition with a show of solidarity and communal defiance.
“In response to barbarity, this festival will hold up creativity and artistic perspective,” said event organizer Dominique Puthod as he addressed the lively crowd. “You will bring color and wonder to the eyes of young and old alike, on bruised and battered paper, as a tribute to life.”
“The best response to this tragedy is to live even more forcefully and more intensely,” added Annecy mayor François Astorg. “With this conviction art and culture celebrates life, and enables us to change the world to make it a better place.”

Olympia Ohanian is having a spectacular month. Weeks after her parents broke the exciting news that she's going to be a big sister, the 5-year-old received another surprise: a Halle Bailey Princess Ariel doll inspired by the live-action "The Little Mermaid" remake. "What is it?" Olympia asked as her parents, Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian, watched her unwrap the gift at the dinner table. "Mama and Papa wanted to get this for you," her dad replied. After looking the doll over once, Olympia's eyes lit up with delight.
"I've never had a mermaid doll before."
"Little Mermaid! Thank You, Daddy! Thank you!" Olympia shouted. As she clutched the doll between a Barbie-pink manicure - a perfect match for her "Encanto" princess dress - Olympia couldn't contain her excitement. Within seconds of opening the package, she let out an unintelligible shriek, jumping up and down enthusiastically to celebrate.

Splash Mountain, the Disneyland flume ride which has been criticized for racist and stereotyping related to its roots in the 1946 Disney film Song of the South, will officially close at the end of the day today to begin its renovation into an attraction based on the more modern film The Princess and the Frog. Walt Disney World closed its version of the ride in January.
According to Disneyland officials, the renovation project is expected to last more than a year. The re-imagined ride, which will be called Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, is scheduled to open in late 2024. When the attraction closed in Orlando earlier this year, Splash Mountain saw a record wait time of 220 minutes on its final day. It looks like there is a similar turnout at Disneyland today, with some reporting a 200-minute wait by 2 p.m.

The recently announced live-action remake of “Moana” is still in development, but Auli’i Cravalho won’t be returning, a least not in front of the camera. The actress took to Instagram to pass the proverbial torch to whoever will be playing the title role for the next go-around.

I believe it is absolutely vital that casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell.”

Disney princess dreams came true at the world premiere of "The Little Mermaid," as Halle Bailey, star of the new live-action remake, and Jodi Benson, lead of the original 1989 classic, united on the sea-blue carpet on May 8. A TikTok from the star-studded event captured a sweet moment where the two actors embraced one another and exchanged kind words before heading off to see the highly anticipated Disney film.
But before then, Benson spoke to "Entertainment Tonight" and shared nothing but praise for Bailey's "brilliant" performance as Ariel. "She doesn't need any advice from me," Benson laughed when asked if she helped Bailey prepare to become a real-life Disney princess. We're ready to go under the sea for Disney's live-action "The Little Mermaid" movie. The film was first announced back in 2016 and details about it have been trickling in slowly ever since. After the Covid-19 pandemic slowed production, the movie is finally set to hit theaters this month and fans are eager to take it all in - including the movie's many differences from the original, like new songs and even some tweaks to original tracks fans have come to love.
The rebooted version of one of the original film's most iconic songs, "Part of Your World," dropped on April 26, and hearing how much emotion star Halle Bailey's vocals bring to the song will make you even more excited to hear the rest of the movie's new music. Just over a week later, on May 7, a snippet of another "Little Mermaid" original, "Kiss the Girl," was previewed during the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Every Disney fan is familiar with the magical star first seen in "Pinocchio," which old Geppetto wished upon in order to turn a certain wooden puppet into a real boy. Well, get ready to find out the origin story for that star ... or something like that. "Wish" was first announced during last year's D23 celebration, centering on that iconic wishing star that has appeared in subsequent movies like "Peter Pan," "Lady and the Tramp," and "The Princess and the Frog" and has become synonymous with the Disney brand itself. So perhaps it was only a matter of time before an entire movie was made about it with the star as a main character.
Depending on your perspective, this was either the most obvious and satisfying way to celebrate 100 years of Disney, or an ouroboros-like demonstration of the biggest entertainment corporation on Earth gazing directly into its own navel like never before.

For Halle Bailey, starring as Ariel in "The Little Mermaid" isn't just another box to check off her list of accomplishments - it's much bigger than that. The 22-year-old is making history as the first Black actor to play Ariel and the second to be crowned a Disney princess with her role in the forthcoming live-action film. She's well aware of the responsibility that comes with that.
"It's about time that a role like this is played by a Black woman, by somebody who is just a part of this beautiful community. Disneyland officials confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that a lyric from the song was removed from the soundtrack of the Magic Happens parade, which is held twice daily at the Anaheim resort. The Magic Happens parade returned to the park on Feb. 24, ending a three-year hiatus prompted by the Covid pandemic. According to the report, “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” has been replaced by a song from the 1953 feature “Peter Pan.”
Representatives for Disneyland were not immediately available for comment.
