Like meth, this movie is not for the faint of heart

But it is a devastating expose of party-n-play culture. It's hard to depict methamphetamine use with any sensitivity, but this movie's dry and frank style bring this plague into startling focus. It's very compassionate and gives a lot of context and insight into how Gay culture and drug culture meet. It is heartbreaking to know that the majority of the men interviewed for this movie are HIV-positive. This movie includes graphic sexual content and vivid depictions of drug use, but it serves a very valuable purpose. it is an eloquent call for social responsibility.

Powerful, moving, a testament to the social power of independent film.

The Sad Tragedy that is Truth - METH is Astounding
christopherfordm13 January 2007
I just saw this movie at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, where I believe it is the only film by a local director. And I believe it is in the same league as "The Thin Blue Line" and "Paris is Burning" on a myriad of levels. While built on a fairly standard documentary-film archetype, there is a lushness and, for lack of a better word, 'gloss' to the extraordinary beauty, color and composition of the film that it speaks to the intense subject matter with an ironic, knowing nod. The men who participate in this film were men of intelligence and awareness who remain men of intelligence and awareness; however, what they have learned of themselves through the loss the misery and the depravity they embraced is the hard fact that they were good people BEFORE, they just didn't believe it. And sadly, some still don't. My only concern with this truly courageous, fully-to-truth's-edge film is that the people most in need of it will NOT see it, by their choice. This director is strong and total - and he needs to be acknowledged for this extraordinary accomplishment. This film hold back nothing, and it's genius is that while a cautionary tale, it's presentation will make you KNOW why meth is an alluring, power-hungry bitch. Kudos.

Warning: Spoilers
"Meth" is a documentary about the increasing use of Meth within the gay community in the United States and the reasons that lead different men to abuse this drug, risking their lives and their social environments.

In my eyes it is a very important one, because through various interviews with users, you get a sense for why this drug in particular appears so attractive to many men and there's probably no better way to protect people from having to face this fight themselves, than showing them what can happen through real examples. Of course this is not an issue that's linked to the gay community alone and thus I would have found interesting to also have other users involved, but since the documentary explicitly focuses on this particular group, it allows its viewers to gain a deeper understanding for the roots of the problem. It reminds us that every "political issue" always has its personal stories, that can be very moving sometimes.

All in all this is a beautiful and sad film, one that hopefully can prevent some people to start Meth in the first place and one that doesn't demonize users but takes them serious and gives them a voice and a face.
