PETER GUNN "Mask of Murder" 1960

This is second episode from season three of the 1958 to 1961 P.I. series, PETER GUNN. Craig Stevens headlines as the hard as nails detective who always dresses with style. Regulars in the series are Hope Emerson as the owner of, MOTHER'S jazz club, and Lola Albright as Stevens' squeeze, Edie Hart, who is the club singer at MOTHER'S.

P.I. Peter Gunn (Craig Stevens) receives a late night phone call from Robert Brubaker. The man asks Stevens to hurry over to his place. He tells Stevens that he is sure he will be killed that night. 20 minutes later, Stevens arrives and is met at the door by the man's wife, Diane Foster.

As Foster takes Stevens to Brubaker's office, a shot thunders out. The two race to Brubaker's office and find the man inside a locked room. The body is still holding a gun in its hand. It looks like suicide. Stevens called his Police buddy, Herschel Bernardi to have a look at the stiff. The Police rule the matter death by a self-inflicted gunshot.

Several days later, the widow tells Stevens that she believes the death was a murder. Miss Foster swears that it had to be a shady business friend of her husbands, Morgan Jones. Jones it turns out had split for Rio in Brazil shortly after Brubaker's death.

Stevens takes the case when offered a large retainer by Miss Foster. He hits Rio just at carnival time which makes hunting down Jones all the more difficult. He spreads around a little bit of folding money and comes up with several leads.

The leads soon turn up a stiff along with the so called grieving widow, Miss Foster. It turns out that Foster had actually been stepping out with Jones. She was most annoyed that Jones had skipped after the murder, taking cash the two had lifted from her husband.

Foster had hired Stevens and then followed him. When Stevens found Jones, Miss Foster steps up and fills him full of lead. The old "a woman scorned" bit comes into play. Stevens now escorts Foster to the Police.

Decent episode.

Pete Goes to Rio

Hartley is found dead of a gunshot in a locked room. Can it be anything other than suicide. His wife tells Pete it's murder, but can it be.

At first I thought the story would be a version of the old locked-room conundrum. But instead Pete takes off for Rio, on the trail of the guy the wife accuses of being the murderer, while the story takes a backseat to Rio itself.

For a 30-minute TV production, the Rio scenes are very colorful and well mounted. Apparently, the producers didn't scrimp on the budget. One of the series' big strengths-- visual excitement-- is on display with the many carnival grotesques. All in all, the premise looks like little more than an excuse for the entry's real purpose— the visual excitement of Rio at carnival time.
