Norrie, the barman at The Two Ways, is desperate to find volunteers to walk from Glasgow to The West Highland Way for charity. He tries persuading Rab and Jamesie to go along but Rab scoffs at the idea, until Norrie bribes him with free drink.
Things are a shambles right from the start, Rab and Jamesie quarrel the moment they arrive and Rab's attempts to erect the tent are pathetic. To make matters worse, they have no food. Starvation looks likely, until they are invited to join a group of new age travellers for a bite to eat.
Arriving back in Glasgow, Rab is astounded to find that the 'free drink' he has been promised is not what he expected!
A good little finisher for the fourth series, though it is somewhat stretching belief that Rab and Jamesie would take part in a sponsored walk, though all the same it makes a nice change. The moment in which Rab and Jamesie embrace each other proudly after completing the walk is wonderfully touching.
Though most of the regular characters do appear for a short time, 'Further' is virtually a two-man piece. The scenery shots of The West Highland Way are beautiful too, backed up by David McNiven's wonderful incidental music.
Funniest bit - almost demented with hunger, Rab and Jamesie are about to desperately tuck into a patch of wild mushrooms, until Rab points out they could well be toadstools. ''You better not be toadstools!'' shrieks Jamesie at the patch of fungus' whilst pointing a threatening finger. I know it does not sound particularly funny but the way Tony Roper said it was hilarious.
