The empty nest
Rabical-9122 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The seventh series of 'Rab C. Nesbitt' begins with Gash, now married to Natalie ( Elaine M. Ellis ), moving out of the Nesbitt household to move in with his new bride at her father Dan's house. Gash is uncomfortable in his new surroundings. For a start, he becomes attracted to Natalie's busty ( and previously unmentioned ) sister Bridie. Worse, Natalie and Bridie's mentally deranged brother Tweety ( Ian Bustard ) seems to take a fancy to Gash, constantly referring to him as ''sexy boy!''.

Meanwhile, Mary starts suffering from empty nest syndrome, which ends up putting a strain on her and Rab's marriage. To fill the void in her life, Mary ends up befriending an elderly woman named Joy, however this friendship does not last long when Mary discovers that Joy is a repressed lesbian who holds carnal feelings towards Mary...

An amiable opener to the seventh series. David Mckay, who played Screech, did not return for this series and so his character was written out. Screech was not a popular character ( as fans felt he was nothing more than an unnecessary replacement for Eric Cullen, who played Burney ) and no explanation is given as to his departure. Nicola Park ( who had previously appeared in the series five episode 'Father' as Rab's sister Rena ) makes her debut here as Bridie, soon to become Gash's new love interest, while the much missed Jimmy Logan makes a welcome return as Dan Grogan.

Joy is played by the late Sheila Stefael, who has worked with many of Britain's greatest comics over the years such as Tommy Cooper, Eric Sykes and Ronnie Barker. Gash, of course, was not out of the Nesbitt household for long. At the end of the episode, he, along with Natalie and Bridie is forced to move back home after Dan ( doing his nickname 'quick tempered Dan' justice ) is arrested for shooting Tweety with a harpoon!

Funniest bit - Rab's anti social display of behaviour at a local community centre! It's too difficult to do it justice here. You really would have to see it to find it funny.
