Sex & Nudity

  • In a manner typical to many French films, Blame it on Fidel! does not shy away from heavy issues like sex, nudity, and, particularly, abortion. There is one scene about halfway through the film in which a character - a child - sees the protagonists' father naked, although the film shows nothing but underwear. This spawns an ongoing discussion about "dickies" and "duckies" between the two young girls, one of whom is privy to the "how babies are made" story, and the other of whom has been left in the dark.
  • What a woman may do with her body is also a strong underlying theme. The movie is set in a time when abortion is illegal, and the protagonist's mother, once back from a trip abroad, takes it on as a personal mission to write a book about the injustices the anti-abortion law has caused to individuals in her community.
