Viggo Mortensen loves him a good Western. The actor has starred in several of them, 2008’s “Appaloosa,” 2004’s “Hidalgo,” and even more recent arthouse international films like “Jauja” and “Far from Men” employ elements of this genre. Mortensen has also moved into writing and directing features in recent years, following the critically-acclaimed “Falling,” and so his next directorial effort, “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” is also returning to the dangerous Western frontier.

In the former’s directorial debut, the pair play a father and son facing up to the older man’s dementia. It offers 80-year-old Henriksen the meatiest role of his astonishing career
Viggo Mortensen first met Lance Henriksen when he shot him dead. Mortensen, the Lord of the Rings star and three-time best actor Oscar nominee, was facing off the older actor – a veteran of more than 200 movies including Aliens and The Terminator – in the 2008 western Appaloosa.

Exclusive: Viggo Mortensen is returning to the Sundance Film Festival for the first time since 2016 when Captain Fantastic made a big splash and led eventually to a Best Actor Oscar nomination for the star. This time however he is adding director and screenwriter to his resume, with his behind the camera debut, Falling, which is set to officially close the festival and is part of the Premieres section but will start screening on Friday. I was invited to see it ahead of time a few weeks ago at a UTA screening and a few days later sat down in a Santa Monica restaurant to talk about the film with its director and co-star.
Falling is produced by Daniel Bekerman of Scythia Films and Chris Curling of Zephyr Films together with Mortensen, who previously produced Everyone Has a Plan, Far from Men and Jauja through Perceval Pictures.

According to makeup department head Tarra Day, “Godless” is unique in the western genre simply because of its “strong women characters.” Day has a lot of experience with cowboys in the Wild West, having worked on such films as “Appaloosa” (2008) and “The Magnificent Seven” (2016). But in most cases “the women are prostitutes or girlfriends or wives. There hasn’t been a lot of room for female characters to lead the western.” That changed with this Netflix limited series. Watch our exclusive video interview with Day above.

Westerns are one of those rare, uniquely American film genres. They dominated film screens for years, were amongst some of the finest stories told in film, and they are films that have created some of the most compelling characters in film history.
But somewhere around the brilliant, sprawling mini-series Lonesome Dove in 1989, the western lost its appeal to the mass audience. They suddenly seemed out of touch and with the exception of movies like Young Guns (and its sequel). In recent years, however, westerns have been making an unmistakable resurgence in both film and television.
They didn’t completely disappear, though. In fact a few would pop up every few years in the 90s, some of the most notable include Unforgiven in 1992, Dances with Wolves in 1990, 1994’s Maverick and 1993’s Tombstone. They’d make a splash and everyone would talk about how it was going to revive the genre but alas it never really happened.

Viggo Mortensen should be a rock star. Like, a bigger rock star than he already is. The dude makes fascinating choices with his career. Yes, he lands in super-mega-franchises like the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But he also collaborates with David Cronenberg, tries offbeat Westerns in Appaloosa and Hidalgo, and, if this news can be confirmed, might play a vampire-smuggler in a long-gestating project. That would be Millenium Films. The Last Voyage of the Demeter, a movie centered on a ship that transports Dracula from Transylvania to England. Neil Marshall has been set to direct the feature for some time now, working off a Bragi F. Schut screenplay adapted from the novels of Bram Stoker. Bloody Disgusting now says that Mortensen is being pursued for the role of Henry Clemens, while Ben Kingsley still is being considered for the role of the ship.s captain. There were even rumors...

Gary Oldman as Jackie Flannery in State Of Grace (Phil Joanou, 1990, USA):
Long considered one of the most talented actors in cinema, it’s very strange that his outstanding acting as the younger brother of Ed Harris’ local crime boss in this underrated film doesn’t get talked about nearly enough when discussing Oldman’s body of work. This is a must-see performance for all Oldman fans. For the record, State Of Grace is a far better Irish mob film than The Departed (Martin Scorsese, 2006, USA), primarily because it contains much better acting across the board. Oldman was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (Tomas Alfredson, 2011, UK/France).
Other notable Gary Oldman performances: Prick Up Your Ears (Stephen Frears, 1987, USA), Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola, 1992, USA), True Romance (Tony Scott, 1993, USA), Leon: The Professional (Luc Besson, 1994, France), Air Force One (Wolfgang Petersen, 1997, USA), The Contender (Rod Lurie,...

The big screen career of "Mad Men" star January Jones has been a bit of a mixed bag. She earned acclaim and attention for her turn in Tommy Lee Jones' "The Three Burials Of Melquiades Estrada" but has otherwise floundered. The less said about "Seeking Justice" the better. And do you remember anything about her role in "X-Men: First Class" besides the lingerie she wore? Oh yeah, she was in "Unknown" too, but again, in such a throwaway, forgettable role it's not a shock it hasn't stuck in the memory. But perhaps this next endeavor will set things right.
Jones is teaming up with Ed Harris to star in the western(!) "Sweetwater." Set to be directed by Logan and Noah Miller (who previously worked with Harris on "Touching Home," and it seems they all got along), the story is set in 1886 New Mexico where a former high school teacher turns to dealing meth.

Those of you who have seen 2008's Appaloosa will know that Ed Harris is no stranger to the western genre, since he co-wrote, co-starred, and directed that film. In that same year, Harris worked with directors Logan and Noah Miller on their first feature, Touching Home, a true story in which Harris played the boys' father and the directors played themselves. Today, Deadline reports that Harris will star alongside January Jones for the Miller Brothers' second outing behind the camera on a western called Sweetwater. Jones plays a widow who must avenge her husband's murder and Harris is the sheriff who helps her. Read on! I haven't seen Touching Home, but when a veteran actor, writer, and director like Ed Harris has enough faith to work with these guys for a second time, that says all I need to know about the quality of their work. Harris is 61-years old now,...

Another week, another Monday. So it’s time for the rundown of DVDs and Blu-ray’s hitting stores online and offline this week. It’s another packed week, with plenty of movies waiting to take you money, so let us breakdown the new releases and highlight what you should – and shouldn’t – be buying from today, March 19th 2012.
Pick(S) Of The Week
Tower Heist (DVD/Blu-ray)
A group of disgruntled luxury apartment employees, lead by Ben Stiller, attempt to take down their wealthiest resident (Alan Alda), who defrauded all of them from their pension plans. With the help of a recently-released ex-con (Eddie Murphy) who has a knack for robberies, a plan is in place to nab $20 million. Of course, what high-stakes, ensemble comedy would be complete without plenty of shenanigans to boot? The fantastic supporting cast includes Matthew Broderick, Casey Affleck, Gabourey Sidibe, Tia Leoni and Michael Pena.

Django Unchained casting continues unabated, yet its status as my most anticipated film of next year means that I don’t mind. According to Deadline, the latest addition to Quentin Tarantino‘s western is Rex Linn, who will be playing Tennessee Harry. Want to know more? You’ll have to read the script or wait for the film, as their story provides no further information.
Linn‘s an actor whose physical appearance often leads him to being cast as a police officer, but that might not be the case in this slave and plantation owner-filled revenge tale. Some of his biggest credits include CSI: Miami, Ghosts of Mars, The Hunted, The Salton Sea, Appaloosa, and has recently been appearing on The Walking Dead. Basically, you’re bound to have seen him in something at some point.

Abigail Breslin continues to make the move toward more adult roles. Variety reports that she is set to lead Beth Schacter's indie comedy A Virgin Mary. Lovable Brit Bridget Jones is finally ready to return to the big screen, according to EW.com. The news couldn't come at a better time for struggling star Renee Zellweger, who, after a string of critical and box office successes (including "Chicago" and "Cold Mountain") has lately been floundering with such forgettable films as "Appaloosa," "New In Town" and "Case 39." A new "Jones" vehicle could potentially give her career a badly needed kick in the knickers. Working Title has been flirting with the idea of another sequel since 2009. While no details have been revealed, the film will allegedly center on...

Few mainstream actresses’ have suffered such an almighty fall as Renee Zellweger over the past five years. After becoming a genuine Hollywood star with her career defining role as Bridget Jones ten years ago (picking up an Oscar nomination in the process, rare for a romantic comedy) she then went on to become a heavyweight of the Awards season fare – picking up another nom for the musical Chicago and then finally winning the Golden statue for Cold Mountain in the two years that followed.
She followed that up with another great turn in Cinderella Man (2005) but then the wheels suddenly came off for her, leading to some dreadful choices which she has not been able to recover from.
