‘Tis the season to watch holiday-themed horror, so we here at Arrow in the Head have decided to compile a list of the Best Christmas Horror Movies! All of the films below are, at the very least, set around Christmastime, and some of them take the connection to the holidays further than that. Here are the top 12 horror movies that we recommend checking out over the next week:
I Come In Peace (1990)
It’s easy to forget that I Come in Peace (a.k.a. Dark Angel) is set around the Christmas holiday, because Christmas is mostly just represented by some set decorations – and you’re distracted from those decorations by all the awesome stuff going on around them. Dolph Lundgren stars as Jack Caine, a Houston detective who doesn’t play by the rules. He’s stuck working with stuffy, suit-wearing FBI agent Larry Smith (Brian Benben), and these...

With the holiday themed horror title Thanksgiving finally hitting theaters a mere 13 years after the trailer first appeared in Grindhouse, we wanted to know what Holiday themed horror film has been your favorite? Do you like the kid friendly mogwai’s who can’t get wet of Gremlins, the singing zombies of Anna and the Apocalypse or is the original holiday slasher Black Christmas still your go to? With Halloween already in our rear view, we are keeping this poll to the holidays that fall in November and December. As always, if you don’t see your favorite listed, click “Other” and let us know what it is in the comments section.

Who on earth would want to release a horror movie in November?! That’s like showing up to Thanksgiving dinner on a full stomach or going for a jog after a marathon. Surely, studios don’t purposefully plan to release their movie during the four weeks After the entire world is consumed with the dead, dying, maimed and dismembered, right? The calendar says spooky season is over (although you and I know differently) and as the grumpy neighbor in Halloween II says, the general audience has “been trick or treated to death” by October’s end.
On the contrary, November Horror has had some shockingly great runs over the years. And maybe there’s a method to the madness. If horror fans are lucky, October is packed tighter than a Black Friday sale at Target during a live in store Taylor Swift performance. Why not wait a couple of weeks...

Stars: Camille Rowe, Jeremy Scippio, Stasa Stanic | Written by Franck Khalfoun, Glen Freyer | Directed by Franck Khalfoun
Night of the Hunted, the latest film from Franck Khalfoun is a remake, but not of Jean Rollin’s 1980 paranoid thriller of the same name, though that would be a logical choice for rebooting in these conspiracy-riddled times. Instead, he and co-writer Glen Freyer have reworked and updated Rubén Ávila Calvo and David R.L.’s 2015 Spanish thriller Night of the Rat.
This film begins in a hotel room where Alice is talking to her husband on the phone, we hear something about an appointment with a fertility specialist before she hurriedly hangs up as John enters the room. Driving back to town in the pre-dawn darkness they make a stop for gas despite Jiohn’s insistence that he filled the tank the day before. Alice goes in to grab some snacks, and as...

In this special holiday edition of The Silver Lining, we’ll be covering Franck Khalfoun’s overlooked urban horror movie, P2.
From gothic castles to isolated suburbs, horror stories are usually set far away from bustling urban centers. While there are occasional examples of urban horror flicks, such as Candyman and Maniac Cop, writers usually tend to avoid heavily populated areas because the abundance of people means that it’s harder to believe our main characters are actually in danger.
However, any fan of True Crime will tell you that being around other people doesn’t necessarily guarantee your safety, as many (if not most) horrific deaths do in fact happen in large cities, with onlookers and law enforcement often being unable -or unwilling- to intervene when something terrible happens. It’s real stories like these that inspired 2007’s P2, an underrated urban thriller that dives into the very plausible...

Speed is something of a universal language, so it’s no surprise that “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” — a show with plenty of it — has become a Netflix sports doc staple. Following the drivers and teams on the international Formula 1 open-wheel racing circuit, the series tracks the on- and off-track exploits of some of the world’s top drivers as they navigate treacherous road courses and the persistent drama of a high-stakes, high-reward enterprise.
It’s a method the show returns to again and again, but the tension of these drivers lined up at the starting grid waiting for the signature five red lights to disappear and signal the start of the race is as primal an idea as you can get in the sports world. Going from nothing to all-out exertion, even if it’s done with the aid of a finely honed, multi-million-dollar vehicle is something to build a show around.

The reveal of Psychonauts 2‘s upcoming invincibility toggle has reignited an increasingly frustrating debate over video game difficulty.
In case you missed it, the Xbox team recently sent out a tweet that simply read “Beating the game on the lowest difficulty is still beating the game.” While that tweet proved to be controversial enough with those who strongly disagree with that seemingly simple sentiment (more on that in a bit), things really got interesting when Psychonauts 2 developer Double Fine decided to weigh in on the topic.
If you beat Psychonauts 2 with the invincibility toggle on, you still beat P2. https://t.co/OinBv1nuNr
— Double Fine (@DoubleFine) July 9, 2021
Interestingly, that happened to be the first time Double Fine mentioned that Psychonauts 2 will include an invincibility toggle. While Double Fine later joked about their response to this tweet, they did confirm that Psychonauts 2 will indeed have an invincibility option and that...

If you've listened to our Corpse Club member-exclusive episode, then you know we're big fans of Junji Ito, the imaginative mind behind so many memorable manga creations, including Tomie, which is moving forward as an adaptation series on Quibi with Alexandre Aja directing, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick writing, and Adeline Rudolph starring in the lead role.
A premiere date and release schedule for Tomie has yet to be announced, but we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are announced. In the meantime, we have additional info below, and in case you missed it, Aja discussed the Tomie series when we interviewed him last year for his new movie Crawl.

In January, the Atlanta-based hip-hop producer TM88 received an urgent call from the rapper Lil Uzi Vert, who was craving a beat reminiscent of his hit “Xo Tour Llif3.” Over the next few days, the two men spent hours on FaceTime perfecting a track together. “He’s like, ‘take that out [of the beat], do this,’ I’m doing it, sending it back,” TM88 recalled recently. “I’m telling him what I don’t like about the lyrics. The whole time I was babysitting my daughter.” The result was “P2,” the closing track...

There is a thriving new genre of internet videos that document rap superstar Lil Uzi Vert descending from his celebrity perch to mingle with the people — walking (or running) among us, casually interfacing with his fans on sidewalks, at department stores, amusement parks, and festival grounds. When the flow of new Uzi music slowed considerably after his 2017 album Luv is Rage 2, these videos helped fill that void. In the best one, he hops off his Atv and strides over to a group of kids sitting on a school bus. He’s like some mysterious,...

While aquatic horror can be fun any time of the year, there’s just something about a genre movie that pits human characters versus nature’s greatest water-bound predators during these warmer months that really puts me into the summertime mood. And with that in mind, you could say that I was already primed to enjoy Crawl even before the first bloodthirsty alligator snapped into action. Director Alexandre Aja, who already has some experience in this realm with his gore-tastic horror comedy Piranha 3D, proves here yet again that he’s a master manipulator of heightened tension and thrills, but he also delivers up a no-nonsense disaster/killer animal mash-up that doesn’t waste a single minute of its efficient 87-minute running time, and even gives us compelling characters (plus Sugar the dog!) that we give a damn about to boot.

[Note: With the film screening as part of this years Horror-On-Sea Film Festival, here's a reposting of our review of the seasonal slasher Once Upon a Time at Christmas]
Christmas horror is one of my favourite sub genres. It of course includes such classics as Gremlins, Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night and Krampus. But with a collection like mine, it also includes lesser known or cult classic titles such as P2, Santa’s Slay, Jack Frost and Rare Exports… to name but a few. So I am always on the look out for new holiday horror. Which is the reason I watched Once Upon A Time At Christmas well outside of the usual November/December time frame.
Once Upon A Time At Christmas is, in very basic terms, a slasher movie set at Christmas – which is no bad thing.

Once Upon A Time At Christmas is, in very basic terms, a slasher movie set at Christmas – which is no bad thing.

While we may already be a few months past the Christmas season, that doesn’t mean there aren’t still plenty of gifts to unwrap in the recent book Yuletide Terror: Christmas Horror on Film and Television, which features essays and interviews from an authoritative collective of writers who dig deep into everything we love about festive frights and seasonal scares. There are definitely several expected titles featured in Yuletide Terror, like Black Christmas and Silent Night, Deadly Night, but there are quite a few surprising topics that are included here as well that I really enjoyed because I knew little to nothing about them, resulting in a reading experience that was highly enjoyable and informative to boot.
Yuletide Terror starts off with the proverbial one-two punch of essays on the two aforementioned Christmas-themed horror films (I’d argue that both Bob Clark’s original Black Christmas and Silent Night,...

Our latest deep-dive into recent books on cinema is heavy on 2017 follow-ups. But there’s also a unique look at late Godard, a romp through holiday horror, and a visually inventive stroll through 101 memorable movies. Let’s march on, starting with every cinephile’s buddy, Guillermo del Toro.
Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water: Creating a Fairy Tale for Troubled Times by Gina McIntyre (Insight Editions)
Guillermo del Toro’s fairy tale romance The Shape of Water was heralded by some as one of 2017’s finest (I’m in that camp) or as 2017’s The Artist (boo). Wherever one stands in this debate, its aesthetic beauty is undeniable. In other words, Shape is more than deserving of the Insight Editions treatment. The book is a gorgeous concoction, filled with del Toro’s endearing sketches, effects tests, film stills, and, best of all, accompanying text that is smart and...

Originally scheduled to be dumped on January 2nd, 2015, Amityville: The Awakening — the fourteenth (!) movie in the Amityville movie saga — was removed from the calendar and eventually rescheduled for release this year. Dimension Films claims to have released a new trailer, but it's exactly the same as the one we posted in August of 2014, with the only exception being the date has been removed from the very end and replaced with the words "coming soon."
What is new, however, is the poster (above) that looks like an Instagram post, which I believe is the first movie poster to use that design. In any case, the movie itself looks like a retread of haunted house cliches, but horror buffs and Amityville completists (are there such people?) will probably want to check it out anyway.
Side note: this is apparently based on a true story, but seriously: how does a modern family move...

It looks like The Weinstein Company are doing some shelf clearing in their Dimension Films division. Originally shot in 2014 under the title "Amityville: The Lost Tapes," this was originally slated to be released in early 2015, before it was yanked off the schedule. Pack your bags, folks, Amityville village is calling once more. In what will be the 13th installment in the genre-defining franchise, Dimension Films and Blumhouse Productions are primed to situate the infamous supernatural tale in the modern age with Amityville: The Awakening.
Written and directed by Franck Khalfoun (Maniac, P2), the feature hues close to tradition by setting up the story of an average family moving into a new home – but this isn’t just any home. Having played host to a series of violent murders in the mid-70s, Bella Thorne’s teenage girl soon begins to realize that there’s something amiss under her family’s new roof, and it all appears to center around her bed-ridden brother (Cameron Monaghan).
Cue supernatural activity and nightmarish apparitions, with the official logline describing The Awakening as so: “Belle and her family move into a new house, but when strange phenomena...

Once set for a release over a year ago, it’s taking quite some time for The Weinstein Company to dump Amityville: The Awakening into theaters. Barring any future delays, the “revival” of the franchise will now arrive on April 1st, and while our hopes for it aren’t very high, Blumhouse has released an inventive new poster for the horror film.
Taking an note from their campaign for the single-screen horror Unfriended — which actually turned out to be great — the first effective poster utilizes the instantly recognizable Instagram frame as it teases the infamously villainous house. The Weinstein Company have also released the trailer, which is just the same one they let out of the gate early a few years back.
Directed by Franck Khalfoun (Maniac) and starring Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bella Thorne, Cameron Monaghan, Thomas Mann, and Kurtwood Smith, check out the trailer and poster below.

Zac Efron's "We Are Your Friends" was unfriended by most of the country this weekend. The Edm movie, co-starring Wes Bentley and Emily Ratajkowski, was released on 2,333 screens but only made $1.8 million. That's not just short of the $8 million projection, it's also the worst wide-release launch of Efron's career and one of the worst openings of any studio film ever.
Entertainment Weekly culled the list of the top 10 worst wide-release movies ever, and "We Are Your Friends" ended up at No. 3, just behind "Delgo" and "Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure." This movie actually did worse than the much-mocked "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" and marks Wes Bentley's second time on the list, since he was also in the horror movie "P2."
According to Variety, Warner Bros. only spent $2 million to acquire "We Are Your Friends." Warner Bros. distribution executive vice president Jeff Goldstein commented on the opening: "We're disappointed,...

Late last year, moviegoers followed Dr. Holden and his collegues into the ancient corridors of a cursed tomb in Grégory Levasseur's The Pyramid, now available to watch on Digital HD from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, with a Blu-ray and DVD release slated for May 5th. With viewers now able to explore the creepy confines of The Pyramid from the comfort of their couches, we caught up with Levasseur to discuss intertwining horror with Ancient Egyptian culture, revisiting The Hills Have Eyes shooting location, filming in tight spaces, and much more.
Thank you very much for taking the time to talk with us, Grégory. Ancient Egyptian culture is interwoven throughout The Pyramid and plays a big role in the onscreen scares. Were you interested in that era of history prior to directing the film?

Has any real-life story spawned more TV shows and feature films than the one behind The Amityville Horror? Jay Anson's book recounting the story of a family that moves into a house previously occupied by a man who murdered his own family has directly led to 13 feature films, including the documentary My Amityville Horror featuring the real Daniel Lutz who lived in the house as a child. It's been referenced all over TV, from The Simpsons to American Horror Story, and its theatrical influence can be felt from 1980's The Changeling to 2012's Sinister. And as if that weren't enough, now the story has evolved once again for a new generation in the form of Amityville: The Awakening. Directed by Franck Khalfoun (Maniac, P2), this new version stars...

You can’t keep a cursed house down. Still boasting that it’s “based on a true story” (maybe, maybe not), the latest “Amityville” movie, titled “Amityville: The Awakening,” gets a PG-13 rating and a new teen star in Disney princess Bella Throne. Okay, so I don’t know if the film is officially PG-13, but it seems like it to me from this first trailer. I mean, just about every shock scene here turns out to be a vision of some kind, which is kind of lame, but hey, after 50 “Amityville” movies, I guess that’s just how it is now. Take a look at the first trailer for “P2″ and “Maniac” director Franck Khalfoun’s latest contribution to the never-say-die horror series. It all looks shockingly generic and teeny-bopper-ish.
