Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Entering the tent of Gypsy fortuneteller Mara Robinson]  Are you Miss Mara Robinson?

Mara Robinson : Yes, I am - Princess Mara Robinson. Won't you sit down?

Michael Anthony : [Anthony sits at a table and begins extracting documents from his briefcase]  Thank you. My name is Michael Anthony.

Mara Robinson : Please, I would rather not have your name just yet. Give me your hand, or would you rather prefer the card?

Michael Anthony : I'm here on business, Miss Robinson.

Mara Robinson : I can only tell what I see.

Michael Anthony : I can tell you what I see.

    [Anthony takes Mara's hand]

Michael Anthony : I see a stranger come into your life and bringing you a most importance piece of paper - a great fortune.

Mara Robinson : Excuse me, but I'm supposed to tell you about your fortune.

Michael Anthony : But you have the wrong hand, Miss Robinson.

    [Giving Mara a check]

Michael Anthony : This is for you.

Mara Robinson : [Mara glances briefly at the check]  The signature is upright and honest.

Michael Anthony : It should be. He's an officer of the bank.

Mara Robinson : [Mara looks more carefully at the check this time]  It's made out to me - Mara Robinson. A million dollars!

Michael Anthony : It is a cashier's check for $1,000,000 - a gift for you.

    Mara Robinson : But who...?

Michael Anthony : The donor of the gift insists on remaining anonymous.

Mara Robinson : But $1,000,000. Why on earth would anyone give me $1,000,000?

Michael Anthony : I couldn't find the answer to that either, Miss Robinson.

[Moving the crystal ball out of the way]

Michael Anthony : But the money is yours if you will just sign this agreement, simply promising not to reveal to anyone the exact amount of the gift or the circumstances under which you received it.

Mara Robinson : You mean this is all mine?

Michael Anthony : To do with as you wish. But if you tell anyone, the gift will be forfeited and the unspent money would be reclaimed. You do understand this condition, don't you, Miss Robinson?

Mara Robinson : I don't understand anything. You mean if I tell anyone that I lose the money?

Michael Anthony : Yes. The only possible exception would be your husband, if and when you should marry. Now if you'll just sign this agreement, Miss Robinson.

[Mara signs and Anthony returns the document to his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : Oh, and the taxes have already been paid.

Mara Robinson : Taxes. Oh, to be able to pay taxes.

Michael Anthony : [Preparing to depart]  Thank you. Well, good bye, Miss Robinson - and good fortune.

Mara Robinson : And good fortune to you and health and happiness.

Michael Anthony : Thank you very much, but all I really need is just my briefcase. Good bye.
