The Tattooist is based on a screenplay by New Zealand filmwriters Mathew Grainger and Jonathan King.
Most of them are fake and needed to be reapplied. However, the tattoos on Jake Sawyer ()'s back that are in Japanese writing apparently are real.
The Illustrated Man (1969) (1969) is probably the most well-known movie about a person with tattoos. Also try Blue Tiger (1994) (1994), American Yakuza (1993) (1993), Red Dragon (2002) (2002), and The Blue Elephant (2014) (2014). There are also Memento (2000) (2000) and Ghajini (2008) (2009), but instant camera photographs play a slightly more prominent role. Eastern Promises (2007) (2007) may be of interest.
