Sort of like the Pamplona of drag queens.

Well, this short film came as a surprise to me. I live in Florida and don't know much about Fire Island other than it is a traditional gay hot spot. Here in Florida, we have Key West and I would have expected such an event to take place there instead of off the coast of Long Island.

It seems that once a year, there is a very strange parade--sort of like "the running of the drag queens" on the Island. It all began three decades ago when a couple drag queens were refused service in a local bar. In retaliation, a large group of men in drag descended on the bar and flooded it! Now, to celebrate this funny form of social protest, each year men come from all over the world to dress like women and prance about in a parade.

While this sort of film might shock the average non-gay person, it is pretty interesting and restrained. Aside from a few crude nicknames, the film is pretty tame and features lots of interviews and footage of a ferry boat filled with "dragsters" arriving for the party. It's all very interesting and well made...and, of course, pretty strange, indeed!
