A love story with black humor and social comment
Nozz20 February 2010
This is a take on the old "Gift of the Magi" story. With little money available, each spouse is determined to make a sacrifice and stop the other from doing so. The film is not cloying because we see that the financial emergency has strained the couple's relationship to near breaking, and we sense that in fact the whole country in the year 2006 is full of people who can't make ends meet-- even people who, like the husband in this story, have enjoyed past success and are still willing to work. The solution that the husband has in mind is a grisly one, and the filmmakers handle the black humor of it well with the help of a team of skillful, straight-faced actors. Among them is Zeev Revach, who wasted a great deal of his career on low comedy but can still get a good character role and do right by it.
