Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Tipton library to find Tipton seated in a high-backed chair at his desk, admiring a crystal vase]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : [Indicating the vase]  What do you think of it, Mike?

Michael Anthony : That's very beautiful, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : Yes, beautiful. But it's exasperating.

    Michael Anthony : What?

John Beresford Tipton : No card, no name. There's nobody to thank for it.

Michael Anthony : [With a wry grin]  If you'll excuse me, sir, that's how some of your beneficiaries feel when I tell them the donor must remain anonymous.

John Beresford Tipton : [Chuckles]  But at least they can thank you, Mike. I didn't even get to thank the delivery boy.

    [Indicating the crystal vase]

John Beresford Tipton : Now, if this were only a crystal ball, I'd be able to find out who gave it to me.

[Tipton hands over an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire, Mike.

    [Anthony bows and departs]

  • Michael Anthony : [Russ White is seated on a bench in the park, feeding pigeons. The pigeons scatter as Anthony, carrying a small briefcase, approaches. To White]  I'm sorry. I didn't mean to disturb them.

Russ White : Oh, that's okay. It was their last course anyway.

[Chuckles as Anthony sits on the bench beside White]

Russ White : . INSERT 2 NEW LINES HERE LINE 1: White:

[indicating the trees in the park]

Russ White : They're beautiful, aren't they? LINE 2: Anthony: Yes, indeed. MOVE THESE LINES DOWN TO LINES 5-6 You know, it's hard for me to get used to the idea that everyone else isn't seeing everything for the first time. After ten years of darkness, I'd given up.

    Michael Anthony : Oh?

Russ White : I didn't even have much hope when the doctors said it could be done. They transplanted my corneas.

    [Anthony nods]

Russ White : Now it's as though I've been given back to the whole world. Still can't believe it.

Michael Anthony : [Opening his briefcase]  I have something here that might help. You are Russ White, aren't you?

Russ White : Well, yes. But how do you know?

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. Your landlady told me where you'd be. She described you quite accurately.

    [Holding up a check]

Michael Anthony : Here, I have a gift for you.

    [White looks puzzled]

    Michael Anthony : It's a cashier's check.

Russ White : Oh, but it says a million dollars on it.

Michael Anthony : It is a million dollars.

Russ White : And my name - Russ White. Aw, why for me? Who would give me a million dollars?

Michael Anthony : I can't answer your questions. But I assure you it is yours, providing you sign this agreement

    [Displays document]

Michael Anthony : . You merely pledge not to reveal the source or the amount of this gift, except to your wife if you are married. If you do tell, you forfeit what remains.

Russ White : But a million dollars!

Michael Anthony : And the taxes have been paid.

[Holding up the agreement and a pen]

Michael Anthony : Ah, will you sign here, please?

    [White signs]

    Michael Anthony : Thank you.

[Anthony returns the document to his briefcase]

Russ White : Well, it's a miracle. But I guess I got to believe in miracles, Mr. Anthony. One has already happened to me. Mr. Anthony, this is my future - my ticket to happiness. Now, I can have fun. I can travel. I can start my own business. I can do everything I want now.

Michael Anthony : I wish you the best of luck.

    [Anthony prepares to depart]

Russ White : Wait. How can I thank the man that gave me this?

Michael Anthony : As I indicated, he must remain anonymous.

Russ White : Then I can thank you.

[White shakes hands while Anthony smiles widely]

Russ White : Wait a minute. With this, maybe I can thank the man who gave me back my sight. Even though he's dead, I can do something for his family. Maybe that way, I can give thanks for my life, before I start living again

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  When I delivered the check to Russ White, he had just recovered from a serious but successful operation. He was not at home, but his landlady told me where I could find him.

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony, and until his death, I was executive secretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multibillionaire, who had the strange hobby of giving away $1,000,000. One million dollars, tax-free, to an individual who had never met him, who indeed had never even heard of him. This is Silverstone, John Beresford Tipton's 60,000-acre estate. Mr. Tipton was a man of amazingly wide interests - so wide that one never knew what to expect when called into his presence.
