Well, they finally did it. After a supposed decade in the works and 35 years of fans imagining what a movie would look like, Nintendo has officially willed a feature film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda into existence. Yet what should have been cause for celebration was met with a thud.
But why? As we’re entering what looks to be the dawn of Hollywood’s video game takeover, you’d think that news of a Zelda movie would be a shoo-in. Riding high off their billion-dollar Super Mario Bros. movie,...

Hand over your crowns, Batman and Iron Man, it's Mario and Freddy Fazbear's time to reign dominant over the box office. Yes, it seems video game adaptations might be the next big thing in Hollywood, now that the generation of kids who were raised on gaming consoles and point-and-click titles are old enough to purchase movie tickets for themselves. And with "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" allowing Nintendo to successfully expand into the film business, what better time for the paterfamilias of high-fantasy video game series, "The Legend of Zelda," to finally make its way to the big screen in live-action?
This isn't the first time Nintendo has adapted the adventures of Link, Zelda, and the other citizens of Hyrule for a different medium. 1989's "The Super Mario Bros. As soon as it was announced on Tuesday that a live-action “Legend of Zelda” movie is in the works, fans started dream-casting the title role. At the top of many a list? “Euphoria” star Hunter Schafer. At the London premiere of “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” on Thursday night, Schafer confirmed she’s seen the fan castings circulating on social media.
“That would be so cool,” Schafer said about playing Zelda in the live-action film. “I love the game, personally. I played it as a kid and I still play it now. Who knows! That would be pretty cool.”
Schafer had previously expressed interest in playing Princess Zelda, saying in an interview with Et: “I mean yeah, that would be cool. I played that video game a bunch when I was a kid. That’s such a good game.”

It was announced this week that director Wes Ball will be helming a live-action feature film based on the Nintendo video game franchise "The Legend of Zelda." The original 1986 "Legend of Zelda" game took place in a fantasy kingdom called Hyrule, which had become overrun by monsters after the evil pig-like overlord Ganon kidnapped Princess Zelda. Players controlled an elf-like hero named Link as he traversed dungeons, collecting a growing array of weapons and seeking pieces of the Triforce, a triangular widget of ineffable power. It was Nintendo's riff on the high fantasy genre, taking cues from "Dungeons & Dragons" and J.R.R. Tolkien.
In the 37 years since the game's release, it has become a massive property unto itself, spawning 19 sequels and a 1989 animated segment that ran as part of "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show." It would have seemed logical to have made a "Legend of Zelda" feature film by now,...

Nintendo recently confirmed that a live-action Legend of Zelda movie is in development in the most Nintendo way possible: a random and vague tweet released with little fanfare. While a Legend of Zelda movie felt inevitable following the success of the Super Mario Bros. movie, recent years have taught Zelda fans to take nothing for granted. After all, we’ve gone this long without a proper Zelda adaptation. There were no guarantees that Nintendo would come to their senses now.
However, the decision to develop a Legend of Zelda movie now after all these years does raise a number of potentially complicated questions. The most notably among them would have to be, “Where in the Zelda timeline will that movie take place?”
While talking about the Zelda timeline for too long is a guaranteed way to drive yourself insane, the fact of the matter is that the Legend of Zelda...

Yesterday, I emerged from a personal errand, made the mistake of opening social media, and saw my particular corner of the internet in an uproar. They were finally making a live-action movie based on the beloved "Legend of Zelda" video game series ... and Wes Ball was directing it. And everyone seemed to be grumbling about that.
Granted, my particular bubble does not necessarily represent the wider world, but I honestly thought my particular bubble would know better. In fact, I've rarely been more disappointed in my particular bubble! My particular bubble is supposed to know a thing or three about movies and the people who make them. So the wave of negativity and instant cynicism I saw surrounding this announcement made me realize I was going to have to write the article you're reading right now. This is your fault. Sorry.
Anyway: Wes Ball is an inspired choice to direct a "Legend of Zelda" movie,...

Oddly enough, when “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was such a hit earlier this year, people were more excited by the prospects of different Nintendo properties making their way to the big screen than were for an actual sequel to the animated hit. In fact, perhaps the biggest comment from fans of Nintendo was about the possibility of a live-action version of “The Legend of Zelda.” Well, it appears fans will be getting exactly what they wished for.

Video game fans got a huge surprise when Nintendo announced Nov. 7 that it is developing a live-action film based on The Legend of Zelda alongside Sony Pictures. The film is being directed by Wes Ball, best known for helming three “Maze Runner” movies. He’s also set to relaunch the “Planet of the Apes” franchise after a seven-year hiatus with next year’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.”
While Ball’s hiring might’ve come as a surprise to some, Zelda fans quickly discovered one of the director’s tweets from 13 years ago in which he posted about how his dream of one day directing a Zelda movie would most likely never happen.
“Since I could never even hope to have the chance to direct it…the next big mo-cap ‘Avatar’-like movie should be…The Legend Of Zelda,” Ball posted on Jan. 29, 2010. Flash forward over 13 years later,...

Nintendo is finally turning the video game The Legend of Zelda into a live-action movie and everyone is already trying to guess who will be cast as Link!
Link is the character who is controlled by players of the video game and it’s up to him to save Princess Zelda from her kidnappers.
The Maze Runner director Wes Ball is attached to direct the upcoming movie and fans have already been throwing out names for who they think should play Link.
Machine Gun Kelly and Logan Paul have both dressed as Link for Halloween, but we don’t think either of them will land the role in the movie.
Tom Holland, Jacob Tremblay, and Justice Smith are just a few of the names we’ve seen being mentioned on social media. We have a whole list of other options as well!

Watch out, Mario, because Link's right behind you! "The Legend of Zelda," arguably Nintendo's second most-famous franchise, is getting its own movie adaptation -- but this time, it'll be in live-action. According to Nintendo, director Wes Ball is set to direct the film, which will be produced by video game creator Shigeru Miyamoto ("The Super Mario Bros. Movie") and Avi Arad ("Spider-Man"). Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment will co-produce the film, with Nintendo providing more than half of the financing, and Sony will handle theatrical distribution around the globe. This isn't the first time someone's tried to make a live-action version of the world of Hyrule, but hopefully Sony Pictures has better luck than Netflix did with their ill-fated attempt at an adaptation a few years back.

DragonForce have announced their eighth studio album, Warp Speed Warriors, out March 15th via Napalm Records. The power metallers have also offered up the music video for the new single “Power of the Triforce,” inspired by The Legend of Zelda video-game franchise.
The band’s regal heavy metal goes hand in hand with storytelling and all things swords-and-sorcery, making Zelda prime subject matter for a song. Ornate guitarwork from axemen Herman Li and Sam Totman sets the stage for a tale of heroism in the land of Hyrule, as narrated through the epic vocals of frontman Marc Hudson.
Zelda fans will get a kick out of the accompanying video, which sees the band members performing in Hyrule Castle and wielding the Master Sword against a Ganon-like foe.
“We’re thrilled to unveil our latest track, a powerful homage inspired by one of our favorite video-game franchises, Zelda!” Li said via a press release.

This month sees the launch of Super Mario Bros. Wonder: the first new Super Mario game on the Nintendo Switch since 2017’s Super Mario Odyssey and the first side-scrolling Super Mario game since 2012’s New Super Mario Bros. U on the Wii U.
While there’s plenty of buzz about Wonder being the first Super Mario game to feature a different voice actor for Mario (instead of franchise veteran Charles Martinet) in over 25 years, the game also marks the return of prolific Nintendo developer Takashi Tezuka, who serves as Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s producer.
A presence with the Super Mario series since the beginning, Tezuka is the unsung figure behind making the video game hero a global icon and figurehead of the entire video game industry.

Over the last couple of decades, the Open-World genre has slowly come to define Triple-a gaming. In fact, the most popular question that precedes the release of most major modern single-player games is “Is it Open-World?” More and more gamers (especially those who only purchase a couple of major new games a year) seemingly find it difficult to believe that all of that development time and production money (as well as their personal time and money) would go toward a game that doesn’t let them go anywhere, do anything, etc.
For the most part, the rise of the Open-World genre has been good for gaming. Even older, great franchises (like The Legend of Zelda or FromSoftware’s Soulsborne games) have greatly benefited from pivoting to open worlds. Open-World and sandbox games were seen as the natural evolution of the medium when they started to take off 20+ years ago,...

Nintendo was the big winner of this year’s Gamescom, the international video game conference that wrapped up in Cologne, Germany, on Sunday. Nintendo Switch game The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom picked up multiple awards, including for best gameplay, best audio and the honor of most epic title at this year’s event.
Already one of the highest-rated games of the year, the latest edition of the popular Zelda adventure franchise has drawn raves for its stunning visuals, open-world architecture and creative gameplay. It was easily the pick of the batch at Gamescom 2023.
Other Gamescom standouts include the action role-playing game Black Myth: Wukong from Game Science Interactive Technology, which took the best visuals honor; fighting title Mortal Kombat 1 won the best Xbox Game title; and that game company’s Sky: Children of the Light took the prize for the best mobile game award.

As the adage goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. Viewfinder has at least a hundred of them to spare, but the real magic of developer Sad Owl Studios’s first-person photographic puzzle game lies in its artistic, interactive approach to science. Your character is immersed in a simulation created by four individuals—Mirren, Chi Leung, Aharon, and Hiraya—and is desperately searching for the results of a weather-related experiment that might somehow help reverse the devastating effects of climate change in the real world.
Wisely, the game doesn’t get bogged down on the technical aspects of the scientific and mathematical theories that your character wrestles with, or on the ins and outs of the teleporters that Chi Leung has engineered. Viewfinder ends up focusing more on Hiraya’s guitar hoppy than the botanical expertise that she was presumably hired to bring to the simulation. And the game...

The Legend of Zelda is as much a genre as it is a franchise. Older entries codified a gameplay loop of exploring dungeons, finding items that open up new areas, and repeating. That design stayed with the franchise, for good and for bad, until The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild tossed quite a lot of it out in favor of expanded open-world concepts.
Given the overwhelmingly positive reviews of that title (and its historic sales figures), Nintendo had clearly struck gold. More importantly, Nintendo made lightning strike twice by iterating on that design with an equally successful sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. But while these recent entries are the most immersive games in the franchise, they raise the important question of which direction the series will follow from now on. The answer, unsurprisingly, seems to be “whatever direction Nintendo wants.”

Final Fantasy 16 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are linked by a surprising number of factors. Both are among 2023’s biggest (and best) new releases. Both are modern entries into historically significant gaming franchises. Both are also clear commercial successes (though Tears of the Kingdom is on another level so far as sales go).
Yet, the most significant quality that unites Final Fantasy 16 and Tears of the Kindom may just be the ways that both games have divided their franchise fanbases. That divisiveness is certainly more pronounced in the case of Final Fantasy 16, but each game faces a surprisingly similar situation. No matter how loud the praise for each title may become, it can’t quite drown out those voices that argue that each game doesn’t quite represent the most unique (or even the best) elements of their respective franchises.

You might as well tell your Korok friends to sit tight and put away your Master Sword because, according to Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination, the rumor about a movie based on The Legend of Zelda being in development is false. Late last week, news leaker Daniel Richtman posted an article to his Patreon saying adaptations of The Legend of Zelda, Luigi’s Mansion, Donkey Kong, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 are actively developing. However, The Wrap spoke with Meledandri at the Annecy International Animation Festival about possibly bringing Link and Princess Zelda to the silver screen, and the Illumination chief says he has no idea where that rumor started.
“I don’t know where that came from,” Meledandri said about the Legend of Zelda rumor. “I mean I can understand how people would surmise all sorts of things because obviously, we’ve had a great experience working together.

After “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” made over $1.3 billion at the global box office, it’s safe to say that Illumination is pretty pleased with its partnership with Nintendo. The new film now ranks as Illumination’s highest-grossing film, surging past 2015’s “Minions” at $1.159 billion to top that list. So will the computer animation studio embark on another project with Nintendo soon, like a rumored “The Legend Of Zelda” movie?

Earlier this year, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” produced by Illumination and Nintendo, was released theatrically and has since taken in over $1.3 billion at the global box office. It’s enough to wonder what is next for the fruitful partnership between the animation studio behind “Sing” and “Despicable Me” and the video game giant. And while a sequel to the “Super Mario Bros. Movie” is quietly being worked on, a recent rumor (via Jeff Sneider) had the two companies collaborating on a different beloved property – “The Legend of Zelda.” At the Annecy International Animation Festival, TheWrap caught up with Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination and the producer of all of their films, and asked about whether Link was coming to the big screen soon.
“I don’t know where that came from,” Meledandri said of the “Legend of Zelda” rumor. “I mean I can understand how people...

The world certainly loves Mario and today, you can finally bring him home. I’ll admit to being somewhat unsure about how The Super Mario Bros Movie would perform; after all, video-game movies don’t have the greatest track record. Imagine my surprise when the movie went on to gross over $1.3 billion worldwide. It had the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated movie and quickly became the highest-grossing film of 2023 (so far), the highest-grossing film based on a video game, as well as the third-highest-grossing animated film of all time. Universal Pictures has set its sights on The Legend of Zelda as its next big video game movie adaptation. According to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, Universal is in the process of closing a deal with Nintendo and the animation studio Illumination to make it happen.
“I’m told that Universal is, in fact, closing a ‘big deal’ with the Nintendo corporation for The Legend of Zelda,” Sneider said on the latest episode of The Hot Mic podcast. “Zelda is looking like the next big Illumination-Nintendo franchise, which we were all sort of expecting. I’m told that is happening.”
He went on to say that it will cost Universal a “pretty penny” following the massive success of The Super Marios Bros. Movie, which has raked in $1 billion worldwide on its way to becoming the highest-grossing video game movie adaptation.

Open-world games are a difficult balancing act. Crafting a large world for gamers to explore is completely detached from creating a world worth exploring. If a game’s world is devoid of content, then it doesn’t matter how much digital square footage the developers crammed into the title. In fact, a lack of worthwhile side adventures and activities can make open-world design a detriment. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom doesn’t have to worry about any such problem since wasting time in its open world is actually one of its greatest strengths.
If you have played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you should be fairly familiar with Tears of the Kingdom‘s basic premise and design. Unlike older Zelda games, Tears drops players in a sprawling open world and gives them a few basic waypoints. That’s about it. From there, players receive little direction.

Nintendo is no slouch when it comes to pleasing the general public with content as they’ve been one of the largest names in the video game universe for several decades, but now that success has finally transferred over to cinema. The Super Mario Bros Movie debuted back in early April and the studio-heads at Universal and Illumination held their breath as they waited to see whether or not the movie would draw crowds – they didn’t have to hold their breath for very long. The film became an instant success among critics and at the box office as it has already raked in over $1 billion worldwide making it the most profitable movie based on a video game of all time, as well as the fifth most profitable animated movie of all time, and the current most profitable movie of 2023.

Early reviews for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom were glowing, to say the least. However, the praise for the game hasn’t exactly slowed down since the first wave of pre-release reviews was released. Actually, a recent review from a notable source just put Tears of the Kingdom in some rare company.
Recently, Japanese magazine Famitsu gave Tears of the Kingdom a 40/40 score. For those who don’t know, Famitsu is a legendary Japanese publication that assigns four reviewers to major new releases. Each reviewer assigns that new release a review score of 1-10. For a game to achieve a 40/40 score, it has to earn a perfect review score from four reviewers. That’s a pretty rare accomplishment. In fact, it’s only happened 28 times in the magazine’s nearly 40-year history.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has only been officially available for about five days. However, early sales reports for the game are slowly coming in, and they tell a story that the rest of the industry should be paying attention to.
At present, Tears of the Kingdom‘s sales are setting a record pace. In France, Tears of the Kingdom sold around 500,000 physical copies during its first weekend. For comparison’s sake, FIFA 23 was the best-selling game in France in 2023, and that game sold 420,000 physical units during its first week. It was also available on significantly more platforms. In the old days of Zelda, “abilities” were tied to items players usually found in dungeons throughout the game. The Hookshot let Link grapple far-off targets, the Roc’s Cape let Link jump, and so on. Not only did these items let players solve puzzles in their respective dungeons but they opened up new avenues in old locations. Now, abilities are divided into several categories, and when players get to use them depends on their category.
In The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild, abilities either came from the Sheikah Slate or the spirits of the Four Champions. The former were handed out at the beginning of the game, while the latter were rewards for completing the game’s main four dungeons. In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, abilities come from either the hand of Rauru (more on that in a bit), Purah’s Pad (which...

The toys to life craze may have died down significantly, but Nintendo is still making their proprietary amiibo and inserting amiibo functionality into (most of) their first-party games. Of course that includes the latest Legend of Zelda title.
In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, players can scan several amiibo a day to spawn useful items, usually in the form of chests, food, and materials. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild uses amiibo the same way, but quite a few of these collectible statutes have come out since that game launched, so there’s more ground to cover. Plus, Breath of the Wild released six years ago; some gamers might need a refresher on how to use them in a Zelda game.

To inaugurate their new console, the Switch, Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The game revitalized and reinvented the entire Legend of Zelda franchise and even the open-world genre. Countless games, including Genshin Impact and Elden Ring, have since channeled the same open-world design energy, but fans didn’t know how Nintendo would follow up their milestone achievement of a game. Would the company continue what Breath of the Wild started or return to the classic Legend of Zelda design for their next Zelda title? More importantly, would Tears of the Kingdom live up to this franchise’s incredibly high standards?
