- Tintin finds himself involved in a mystery of a drowned man, a regular tin of crab meat, and the name of a ship called the Karaboudjan. Upon investigating the ship, Tintin discovers that the shipment of tin cans contains not crab meat, but drugs. After learning about the ship's shady business, Tintin ends up becoming prisoner on the ship which already casted off from the port. The only way for Tintin to escape is by heading for dry land by life boat, and the only person to aid him is the ship's beer guzzling Captain named Haddock who is the only one on board not aware that his crew is trafficking drugs right under his nose.—J LeGault
- A Japanese man approaches a sailor named Dawes in the docks and is handed a tin of crab meat. The Japanese man also wants to know the name of the ship the tin came from, but the sailor refuses to divulge the same citing a threat to his life. The sailor scribbles the name on the paper from the crab meat tin, but their meeting is interrupted by dock goons. The Japanese man is armed and manages to escape, but Dawes is captured and thrown into the water.
Snowy finds a crab meat tin in the garbage, which he brings to Tintin. Tintin admonishes Snowy and throws the tin back into the garbage. Tintin is informed by the Thompsons of a case involving a dead man found floating at the docks. The man was dumped by unidentified men in the water at the harbor and found with a scrap of paper. Tintin realizes that the scrap of paper matches the crab meat tin brought to him by Snowy. Tintin tries to find the tin, but it is no longer in the garbage. The paper has a crab with golden claws printed on it and came from what appears to be a tin of crab-meat with the word Karaboudjan scrawled on the back of it. Thats an Armenian name and doesn't ring a bell for Tintin. A Japanese man sees Tintin looking at the piece of paper and tries to contact him by writing him a letter but is kidnapped.
Tintin tries to rescue the Japanese man but is beaten up himself and the Japanese man is taken away. Tintin learns from the Thompsons that the drowned man is a sailor from the ship called Karaboujan. Tintin goes to the docks and finds the ship called Karaboudjan. The ship's first mate Allan sees Tintin coming and drops a wooden container on top of him with an intention to kill him. Tintin manages to escape just in time. Tintin boards the ship with the Thompsons. Tintin decides to look about the ship as the Thompsons speak with Allan in his cabin. Tintin finds the same crab meat tins in the ship's cargo hold. Tintin is abducted by a syndicate of criminals who have been hiding opium in the crab tins. The Thompsons leave after asking a few questions to the Ship's mate Allan. Allan says that his sailor drowned in an accident after drinking too much at the bar. Allan also tells them that Tintin left a few mins ago on his own.
Allan orders the ship to set sail. Tintin escapes from his locked room after Snowy chews through his bonds. Tintin knocks out a man sent to bring him food. He leaves him bound and gagged in the room. He also finds the Japanese man bound and gagged but can't rescue him as he is bound in iron chains. He learns that the Japanese is a police officer named Bunji Kuraki. The cop tells Tintin how Allan is using the crab tins to smuggle opium across borders. Kuraki tried to warn Tintin but was abducted. Dawes was Kuraki's informant. Kuraki tells Tintin to escape and inform the police.
Tintin moves around the ship & encounters Captain Haddock, an alcoholic sea captain, who is manipulated by his first mate, Allan, and is unaware of his crew's criminal activities. Haddock had no clue that Allan was keeping him drunk and using his ship to smuggle drugs. Tintin hides in the locker under the bed as Allan and his goons enter Haddock's cabin. Haddock refuses to drink whiskey anymore as he had promised Tintin, which alerts Allan. Tintin defeats Jumbo, the sailor left in the cabin, as Tintin is thought by Allan to have climbed out of the porthole. Allan finds Jumbo tied to a chair and gagged. Haddock and Tintin manage to send a message through the radio room and escape on one of the lifeboats.
