Mike Blondel : What's with all the candles?
Maya Graham : Nothing. I like candles.
Mike Blondel : Well, if you're grinding out homework, what's with all the sewing stuff?
Maya Graham : I just want to get stuff done on time. Between chapters, I'm mending dresses Kendra gave me.
[When Mike opens the bathroom door, Maya hands him a candle]
Maya Graham : Nope. Bulb's out.
[Mike flips a electrical switch]
Mike Blondel : This one, too.
[Mike opens Maya's refrigerator and see that it's empty]
Mike Blondel : I guess you guys were planning to eat out?
-
Mike Blondel : Dead, as in no electricity. Come on, Maya. What's going on?
Maya Graham : Kendra's out of work. It's been a long time now. Money's real tight.
[Mike reaches for the phone]
Maya Graham : No, no! Who are you calling?
Mike Blondel : My mom. I'm going to see if she can get her a job with the institute.
Maya Graham : No, no, it isn't necessary. She thinks she got one. The only problem is... it's out of town.
Mike Blondel : Out of town? Where?
Maya Graham : Houston.
Mike Blondel : Wow. Miami to Houston is a lousy commute.
Maya Graham : Tell me about it.
-
[Mike tries to give Maya a wad of cash]
Mike Blondel : Why won't you take it?
Maya Graham : Because I don't want to.
Mike Blondel : But it's just sitting in the bank. I won't miss it and Kendra can pay me back when she gets another job.
Maya Graham : I appreciate the offer. It's very sweet...
Mike Blondel : Don't say sweet. I hate "sweet" I don't ever want to be called "sweet".
Maya Graham : Okay, so you'd rather be called overbearing and manipulative?
-
Dr. Pamela Blondel : Okay, what's going on? Tell me the truth.
Maya Graham : Kendra's in Houston interviewing for a job.
Dr. Pamela Blondel : Wait a minute. Kendra's in Houston and you're here? By yourself?
Maya Graham : It's no big deal. Kendra thinks I'm old enough.
Dr. Pamela Blondel : What is her number in Houston?
Maya Graham : Why?
Mike Blondel : Why?
Dr. Pamela Blondel : Because it's a big deal to me that you're here by yourself.
-
Dr. Pamela Blondel : *Okay.* Pack your things up - everything. Come on, the food, everything.
Maya Graham : What?
Dr. Pamela Blondel : You guys have been playing house for a few days now.
Mike Blondel : Mom, we didn't do anything wrong.
Dr. Pamela Blondel : I'm not saying you did anything wrong, but you're kids. You're only 14 years old. And one more thing - how come you never cook for me like that?
-
Mike Blondel : [to Maya] You take my bed, I'll camp on the floor next to ya.
Maya Graham : 'Kay.
Dr. Pamela Blondel : Ah, hold on. Forget it.
Mike Blondel : Why?
Dr. Pamela Blondel : Maya, get on the couch. Mike, you get your room.
Mike Blondel : What are you afraid we're going to do, Mom?
Dr. Pamela Blondel : ...Keep me up all night.
-
Mike Blondel : Do you ever worry about Kendra when she's away?
Maya Graham : This is the first time she's been away and I haven't worried so far.
Mike Blondel : Do you think she's worried about you?
Maya Graham : No. I love Kendra very much, but she's a total flake. She only worries about herself... kinda like you.
Mike Blondel : Hey! That's not true!
[Flipper splashes water on Mike]
Maya Graham : Look! Flipper agrees with me!
Mike Blondel : He does not. He's just being obnoxious - kinda like *you.*
-
[discussing Mike's mother]
Maya Graham : Teenaged dolphins don't have to stay any place they don't want to. They can just skip across the water and play with the mermaids all day.
Mike Blondel : Teenaged dolphins don't have *her* for a mother.
Maya Graham : *I* don't have *her* for a mother.
-
Mike Blondel : I don't want Kendra getting a job in another city.
Maya Graham : I have no control over it, Mike.
Mike Blondel : I mean, I need you, Maya. I love you.
Maya Graham : What? Don't you ever say that again!
-
[Mike is in bed]
Maya Graham : Mike, do you wear pajamas?
Mike Blondel : Why?
Maya Graham : Because I'm not going to get in there if you don't wear pajamas.
-
Mrs. Hillier : She was placed in foster care after the death of her father in 1991. She disappeared a little over a year ago.
Dr. Pamela Blondel : But she's living with her sister.
Mrs. Hillier : Who?
Dr. Pamela Blondel : Her sister, Kendra.
Mrs. Hillier : She doesn't have a sister.
Dr. Pamela Blondel : Yes, she does. I've spoken to her.
Mike Blondel : I've met her.
Dr. Pamela Blondel : *Maya.*
Maya Graham : I made her up. I had a roommate for a while and she pretended to be Kendra.
-
Maya Graham : You remember the day we first met?
Mike Blondel : When you told me to go away?
Maya Graham : Yeah. I was going to leave.
Mike Blondel : For where?
Maya Graham : Another state, another city. New Orleans, probably. I saw some pretty pictures and I love parades.
Mike Blondel : So, why didn't you?
Maya Graham : Well, because you swam with the dolphins.
Mike Blondel : You met Flipper.
Maya Graham : You told me you were a rogue.
Mike Blondel : You didn't believe me.
Maya Graham : Still don't. I knew you were just sad.
Mike Blondel : I was angry!
Maya Graham : You were sad! So was I. Flipper knew it.
-
[Maya is running away from her social worker]
Maya Graham : This has nothing to do with you! These social workers never let up. Why do you want to get in trouble?
Mike Blondel : I've stole food for you, I've lied for you and I care about you. This does have something to do about me. Maya, you're my best friend. Sometimes I think you're my only friend.
Maya Graham : You know, there were times when I actually believed Kendra was my sister. She'd do my hair at night, make me breakfast sometimes...
Mike Blondel : So, why'd she split?
Maya Graham : Said she got a good job offer in Houston... sort of even asked if I wanted to go with her, but I knew she didn't really want me to. She got sick of the big sister routine. Kendra needed someone to take care of her for a change.
