For the first time, the Hallmark Channel presented at the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday morning with three panels: one featuring their Hallmark Mystery (the channel formerly known as Hallmark Movies & Mysteries) talent, one highlighting their “Loveuary” film, “Sense and Sensibility;” and the final with the cast of “The Way Home.”
The network has had a presence at the press tour with cocktail parties or receptions for more than a decade, but now was the time to take that a step further, says Lisa Hamilton Daly, Hallmark Media’s EVP of programming.
“I think we felt the range of programming that we had to offer this year was so unique and so varied. I am very respectful of Hallmark’s history, the brand and what they did, but I think they had a very clear function for the movies. A lot were like, everybody has that same...

In December 2022, the critically acclaimed, mega-successful stage musical based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book Matilda came to cinemas translated into a punchy, inventive feature film. Written by playwright and screenwriter Dennis Kelly with songs and lyrics by comedian and writer Tim Minchin (Upright), the musical – like the book – is a terrific blend of poignancy and rebellious satire.
Famously adapted for a 1996 American feature film starring writer Mara Wilson in the title role, Matilda is the story of an extraordinary young girl born into a neglectful family who are unable to see, or appreciate her uniqueness. Matilda Wormwood isn’t just an academic genius, and when she goes up against the cruel, child-hating headmistress Miss Trunchbull, she uses her powers to right a generational wrong.
The new film retains the original musical’s anarchic heart, chiefly by retaining its director Matthew Warchus, who pulled the whole thing together...

Disney’s Cruella de Vil is one of the most iconic on-screen villains both in live-action and animation form, but what made Cruella into the evil dognapper with a taste for puppy fur as coats? This week’s release of Cruella, directed by ‘I, Tonya’ helmer Craig Gillespie gives Cruella an empathetic back story you reluctantly have to jump on board for.
We had the pleasure of chatting with Gillespie about his love for working with broken characters, where they began with a non-existent past and working with the wonderful Emma Stone and Emma Thompson and most importantly those fabulous costumes.

Set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, the film follows a young grifter named Estella (Stone), a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly Haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson. But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.

If you’re in one of the 63 million households who have tuned into Netflix’s “Bridgerton,” you’re undoubtedly well-versed in the Bridgerton and Featherington family trees.
But did you know one of the Featherington sisters comes from a distinguished lineage in real life?
Bessie Carter plays Prudence Featherington, one of two daughters her mother Lady Featherington (Polly Walker) is trying to marry off into society. Prudence is known for her off-key fashions and her even more off-key singing.
Her real-life mother is Imelda Staunton, who most know from her role as Professor Dolores Umbridge in the “Harry Potter” film franchise. Staunton has starred in many period pieces, including “Much Ado About Nothing” and “Sense & Sensibility.” She’ll be portraying Queen Elizabeth II in the fifth and sixth seasons of another Netflix hit, “The Crown.”
Her father is Jim Carter, who played beloved butler Mr. Carson in “Downton Abbey.

They took very different paths getting there, but Kate Winslet and Glenn Close could both join the small club of eight-time Oscar nominees this season. Winslet is currently in fifth place in our Best Actress odds for “Ammonite,” while Close is predicted to win Best Supporting Actress for “Hillbilly Elegy.”
If they make the cut, they’d be the sixth and seventh actors to accrue eight bids. Only eight people have more, the most, of course, being 21, amassed by Meryl Streep. The first five eight-time nominees are Marlon Brando, Jack Lemmon, Peter O’Toole, Geraldine Page and Denzel Washington. All won at least once except for O’Toole, who is the most nominated performer without a victory, a title Close would share if she loses again. Winslet doesn’t have to worry about that since she won her Oscar for “The Reader” (2008) in Best Actress.

Jessica Swale’s World War II-era “Summerland,” debuting on demand via IFC on July 31, turns the English coastal countryside into a character in the tale of a reclusive writer played by Gemma Arterton — and the house in which much of the action takes place serves as a portal to those surroundings.
Making her feature film debut, Swale, the Olivier-winning playwright who penned “Nell Gwynn,” enlisted set decorator Philippa Hart to create the ambience of the house. It’s there that Arterton’s Alice is writing a thesis about the mythology of the area, when a boy — an evacuee from London — is left in her care. Overcoming her initial misgivings, she establishes a friendship with the child that reawakens her emotionally and allows her to reconnect with the memories of a former love (Gugu Mbatha-Raw).
The house that’s featured in the movie is film-friendly — its exteriors were used in the final scenes of 2007’s “Atonement.

In the 2000s, a run of martial arts hits that started with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon changed cinema for good.
Wuxia, in one form or another, has been around for nearly two millennia. The word itself – coined in the early 20th century – simplistically translates to “Martial Heroes” and Wuxia stories tell epic adventures, full of martial arts, romantic tragedy, high fantasy and eastern philosophy. Through books, poems and comics, Wuxia perpetuated through the centuries so it’s unsurprising that it made the leap into film as soon as it had an opportunity. Some of the earliest examples of Chinese cinema are Wuxia films and, to give you an idea of how epic I mean when I say epic, the (sadly now-lost) Burning of the Red Lotus Temple (1928) clocked in at roughly 27 hours long…

Rosamund Pike says she was told to strip down to her underwear during an audition for “Die Another Day,” a role she eventually got.
“My first audition was for a Bond film and I remember them saying I was to drop my dress and appear in my underwear,” Pike said in an “Audible Session” to promote an audio book of Jane Austen’s “Sense & Sensibility,” which Pike narrated.
“On the day, I don’t know how I got the resolve and strength of mind, but I just thought, ‘Actually sod that, if they’re gonna see me in my underwear, they better give me the job,'” she said. “So, I thought, ‘There’s no way I’m going to take off a dress in the audition for this tape to be sent around Los Angeles and to be judged on that.'”

Jane Austen fans in the U.S. can be grateful for what appears to have been something of a local feud between the U.K.'s ITV and the BBC over filmed versions of the author's English classics. The rush to production over recent years has made it possible for PBS' Masterpiece Theatre to air adaptations of all six of her novels for the first time in what amounts to an Austen festival beginning in January.
Fans in the U.S. have been busily blogging for months with chatter about the upcoming series, The Complete Jane Austen. But full details of the event are now being outlined by U.K. screenwriter Andrew Davies and Masterpiece executive producer Rebecca Eaton, who are on a multicity tour to promote the series and meet sponsors.
Complete Jane Austen offers new productions of Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, Mansfield Park and Sense and Sensibility. The lineup also includes Pride and Prejudice, starring Colin Firth, as well as the version of Emma that stars Kate Beckinsale.
Eaton said the series will include a production that is bound to have scholars of the great 19th century novelist scrutinizing each scene: Austen Regrets, a biopic based on the author's letters.
