Silent but Deadly

This was an interesting little film that I found both humorous and very gory at the same time. This movie is about a psycho who walks into a mime rehearsal room and kills them in a very interesting way. This movie was a mime trick itself, barely using any sound and portraying each weapon as nothing but air. It was also a very gory film. Now the acting, was mostly physical and for a physical performance, the actors did an very well job acting like they have been shot or hacked to bits. However, when the time called for a spoken performance, the actors did a job that would rival a Lifetime movie or a WGN soap opera and they didn't really do that good of a job. These actors were very good physical performers.

The storyline was very well crafted and thought of. Rather than a man walking in with a real gun, he walks in with an "air gun" and literally kills a mime with an "air bullet," effectively portraying the concept of "mind over matter." I love the way that each murder weapon was played out and how the mimes reacted to each gruesome death. As we all know, with every horrid death there is blood and guts. In this movie there is a fair amount of blood splashes and splatter. However, when the blood splashes and squirts on the main villain's face, it looks like red water squirting from a ketchup bottle. However, when it involves a bullet to the head, the splatter effect is great.

Overall, this is a great comedy horror with one kick ass subtext. There is a lot of good campy, gory fun with some great physical performances by the actors and an overall great story line. I would recommend this to anybody who loves horror shorts and it's only 4 minutes, so it's worth it. I think to those who enjoy the theatrical horror films, which are around 1 hour and a half, this is also a great film to view. It's just one of those movies were you can say, "This is why I love horror movies."

Mime Massacre (2006)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Inventive horror short about a man who hates mimes so he goes to a factory full of them and starts killing. This is a pretty smart and funny short that manages to throw all sorts of gore at the viewer but also manages to be quite funny. The film is done in "mime style" meaning that there aren't any spoken words. Everything is acted out just like a mime and that includes all the murders. All of this leads to some pretty funny stuff if you have a dislike for real mimes. Director Decker does a good job handling all the gore and comedy and blends the two very well. The gore level is quite high but it's all done in a tasteful and over the top way. This film certainly wouldn't work as a feature but it's perfectly suited for its 7-minute running time.

Sure, everyone hates mimes....but this STILL isn't that great a film.

Warning: Spoilers
Okay, the general idea behind MIME MASSACRE is pretty good--after all, most people out there seem to have a deep and abiding hatred of mimes. In TOOTSIE, Dustin Hoffman knocked one down and I remember people in the audience laughing out loud. Heck, even in Paris JE T'AIME, the Parisians generally seem to hate mimes--even though most of us associate these annoying street performers with France. So making a film about our prejudices towards mimes seems like a natural and the idea of killing them seems pretty intriguing, so I gave this one a look.

Unfortunately, this film just didn't feel very satisfying, as there wasn't that much more to the film other than a very, very bloody slaughter of mimes. Sure, the film tried to explain why the guy hated mimes enough to do this, but frankly I didn't care--seeing all this blood and violence stopped being funny long before this "clever ending". In fact, if it's possible, the film had me feeling sorry for the mimes--after all, what's funny or interesting about a bloody rampage?! Senseless and not all that funny--this is a violent film with not enough payoff to merit watching.
