When Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury stormed onto the scene with A L'Interieur it was with a promise that was central to the appeal of that film: "we are not gonna pull any punches". As important linchpins of the New French Extremity, that film's central premise, a pregnant woman having to shield herself from a violent home invader, really promised a grim, bleak and taboo breaking filmmaking duo. With later films, they constantly tried to push boundaries with what they could do as directors, to sometimes mixed results. But Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury never are lazy: their films deconstruct horror, explore societal taboos, and go as far as you can go in mainstream horror. The Soul Eater is a fitting addition to that...

“Suits” creator Aaron Korsh revealed the royal family made some changes to Meghan Markle’s dialogue in the show after she started dating Prince Harry.
Korsh spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about what things were like after Meghan got involved with the royals, laughing, “I mean, your initial reaction is, like, ‘We’re dating a prince!’
“But the security and all that stuff, we shot in Toronto and the writers room was in L.A., so other people were dealing with that. I will say, and I think Harry put this in the book, because I heard people talking about it — [the royal family] weighed in on some stuff. Not many things, by the way, but a few things that we wanted to do and couldn’t do, and it was a little irritating.”

Times change, and people change even more. John Legend is opening up about how and why his decades-long friendship with Kanye “Ye” West has since fallen to the wayside.
Sitting down with journalist Kara Swisher for her New York Magazine podcast, “On With Kara Swisher”, Legend reflected on how the West he knew when collaborating on the rapper’s The College Dropout album and Legend’s Get Lifted — both released in 2004 — is different from the divisive and controversial figure he is today.
“I do find him different than he was back then. I didn’t see hints of this kind of harmful behaviour back then,” Legend said, referring to the antisemitic and anti-Black tirades and comments West has posted and doubled down on repeatedly over the past few weeks.
“But, you know, I think life happens to people and I think the death of his mother [Donda in 2007] probably had something to do with this,...

Us comes from the mind of Oscar-winning director Jordan Peele, boasts an outstanding cast, holds several box-office records, and contains enough hidden meanings to keep us talking until Peele's Twilight Zone premiere. And yet, the elements that continue to dominate the conversation are the relatively simple, but totally creepy old-timey scissors carried by the Tethered throughout Us.
Scissors: typical tool or twisted torture device? That is the question. And it's exactly the terrifying quandary Peele invites us to explore as we follow the Wilsons on their idyllic California beach vacation. After returning home from the boardwalk, the Wilsons encounter a group of shadowy figures standing at the end of their driveway. The beings known as the Tethered are the family's duplicitous doppelgängers. Each figure wears a single leather glove, and their leader carries a golden set of shears that she wields with steely decisiveness.

When it comes to playing console ports and more complex mobile games on-the-go, the lack of a physical controller has always proved to be troublesome. While some of the platform’s best games are designed with a touchscreen in mind, many titles that originate on other platforms — shooters, 3D adventures, and action games — don’t always fare well with basic touch controls. Enter the Rotor Riot, a mobile game controller that, at first glance, provides plenty of functionality, while offering up sturdier build quality — something that can’t be said for its competitors. After spending more than a dozen hours (across multiple devices), it’s safe to say that its utility and value proposition will live or die by the overlap of games you enjoy playing, and games the Rotor Riot supports.
Once you get your hands on the device for the first time, you’ll probably notice the giant wire directly attached to it.

Platformers seem to be a popular vessel for introspective, meandering journeys of self-discovery, hope, and beauty. Just look at Limbo, Inside, Journey, and this year’s fantastic Wandersong. Unlike the much-maligned “walking simulator,” these games present their worlds from a broader perspective, and perhaps because of this they feel grander in scope than something like Edith Finch, despite their similarly personal themes. Gris takes this ability to broaden its range of landscapes and vignettes to an even higher level, panning the camera out great distances to reveal one of the most beautiful worlds a game has ever taken me to.
Like many games of its ilk, Gris has no dialogue. Its storytelling is done through nuanced interactions between the main character, a girl who must heal emotional wounds throughout her journey, and the world itself. The influences are clear — namely Journey — and there’s even a direct homage to one...

In 1998, French filmmaker Olivier Meyrou filmed Yves Saint Laurent as he prepared what would be his final collection before the top-tier fashion brand sold to Gucci the following year. It was the end of an era, as Saint Laurent was already the last of the great French designers to operate his own house, and this would be his “Celebration” — although the man Meyrou observed was far different from what his legend suggested: reclusive, irritable, virtually silent, and, perhaps most shockingly, quite inelegant.
Ironic title notwithstanding, “Celebration” feels less like hollow adulation than some kind of macabre autopsy conducted on a still-living specimen. Saint Laurent died a full decade later, but seems barely there in this often contradictory portrait, which is simultaneously respectful of his genius and perturbed by the twitching, tragic creature Saint Laurent has become. Still, what kind of monster is cooed over by supermodels and treated like royalty by his staff?...

Be it the ease and cost of development, or a retrospective artistic trend, the horror genre has come back to the semi-2D plane in a big way, and the indie-friendly Nintendo Switch is reaping the benefits. The eldritch terrors of Darkest Dungeon should satisfy those looking for an RPG with psychological consequences. A 2D survival horror game called Detention by Taiwanese developer Red Candle Games draws from that same country’s history and culture to deliver its frights, and it’s one of the eShop’s hidden gems. Those looking for a puzzle platformer, however, may now turn to Little Nightmares, a game from Swedish developer Tarsier Studios.

French writer-director Coralie Fargeat makes a spectacular debut with Revenge, a stylish and super-violent thriller that brings a female perspective to the rape revenge genre and delivers a powerful kick to the unmentionables in the process.
The film’s take-no-prisoners attitude is perfectly summed up by its ingenious trailer, which intersperses clips from the film with actual online comments from disgruntled men about the film, with the tag-line “Coming for the haters”.
The plot is ridiculously simple. Married businessman Richard (Kevin Janssens) and his younger mistress Jen (Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz) arrive at a luxury retreat in a remote desert location (it was filmed in Morocco) for a spot of debauchery before Richard’s planned hunting trip. However, their fun and frolics are cut short when Richard’s two sleazy buddies, Stan (Vincent...

Directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (2007's Inside, aka À l'intérieur), Leatherface stars Sam Coleman, Sam Strike, James Bloor, Vanessa Grasse, Stephen Dorff (looking to go full vengeance mode à la Dennis Hopper in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2), and Lili Taylor as Verna Sawyer.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has spawned several sequels and remakes. Since 2012, a prequel has been started, which will deal with Leatherface's early life. The film has been be titled, appropriately, Leatherface. And now, an early graphic has been developed for this feature. That graphic can be found here. French directors Julian Maury and Alexandre Bustillo are helming this project. These two directors developed the very graphic À l'intérieur (Inside). They will co-direct this prequel, which takes place before the original 1974 film. Similar to early scenes of John Carpenter's Halloween, Leatherface will show this iconic character's early life and progression into a life of murder. As well, the early graphic was released at Efm Berlin. So, the poster was first shown in a magazine. The concept poster states: "The Monsters Within." That monster can be seen in the child's shadow, which is that of a chainsaw. Dark and austere,...

What happens when the creators of Inside (aka À l'intérieur) decide to combine Stand By Me with a splash of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and big portions of "home invasion" insanity? You'd probably get something that looks a lot like Julian Maury and Alexndre Bustillo's Among the Living, which is a beautifully shot and admirably unpredictable horror/thriller that uses the ingredients mentioned above -- and maybe a half-dozen others -- to cook up a multi-subgenre variety pack that manages to fire on all cylinders.
Among the Living starts out with a wonderfully disturbing prologue that could easily work as its own short film, but the central story is about three 14-year-old troublemakers who, on the last day of school before summer vacation, decide to skip school, cause trouble for a local farmer, and basically enjoy one of those lazy adolescent afternoons in which three young pals can feel cool,...

There are two very broad, distinct, and (fine) obvious types of horror stories being told in the new indie thriller from After Dark Films (Originals). In one corner we have the "happy family in a creepy house they just bought to get away from the city" stuff and in the other is the "evil female specter who may or may not be real but definitely seems to covet the couple's infant" material. Adding to the patchwork feel of the premise are some touches, characters, and ideas that are inspired by a wide array of recent (mostly indie or foreign) supernatural thrillers...
In other words, Dark Circles will be thoroughly familiar (perhaps even predictable) to anyone who watches a lot of horror movies, but that's not to say you won't find some creepy moments and worthwhile assets scattered across the flick. For example, writer/director Paul Soter seems to actually care about his central characters.

Bob Dylan’s “Positively 4th Street” easily could have been about the parasitic, untrustworthy, unreliable, moderately talented screw-up at the heart of the Coen brothers’ enthralling Inside Llewyn Davis. Set in, but not comprehensively about, the Greenwich Village folk music scene circa 1961, this is a gorgeously made character study leavened with surrealistic dimensions both comic and dark, an unsparing look at a young man who, unlike some of his contemporaries, can’t transcend his abundant character flaws and remake himself as someone else. Closer to some of the Coens’ smaller films such as Barton Fink and A Serious Man than to ...

It's that time of year again when we take a moment to honor our moms. And how great they are, right? Well, here at Dread Central we can turn even the most loving moms into something horrific, and in celebration of Mother's Day, we bring you Horror's 11 Most Memorable Moms!
Read on… and eat your vegetables for chrissake!
Okay, so not all the moms on this list are psychotic killers; some are heroes, and some fall somewhere in between. But they're all great for their own reasons. As usual, we'll start out with some honorable mentions, and we certainly have some remarkable moms to speak about. We'll start with Estelle Collingwood (played by Cynthia Carr) in the original Last House on the Left. Only a mother's love could drive a person to bite a guy's Johnson off as an act of revenge! Another great justice-seeking mother was Kate (played by Vera Farmiga) in Orphan.

Five years ago director duo Bustillo and Maury unleashed À l'Intérieur onto the general public, a film that may be described as one of the most suspenseful and gory films of the past decade and one of the highlights of the French horror wave. Needless to say Bustillo and Maury's Livide faced extremely high expectations, expectations that their new is not going to fulfill. Not because it's a bad film, but because it set out to be a different film altogether.Bursting onto the scene and making a (cult) hit film is not an easy thing to do, but following up on that first hit with something that answers to the expectations of your fans is nigh impossible. And the longer it takes for your second...

It's always exciting to see a fresh take on something you've witnessed before, when a filmmaker—or in Livid's case, filmmakers —toys with mythology, concocts a clever way of expressing that vision, and scares you senseless with what they've crafted. For Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, that fresh take on an old concept was done near flawlessly with the 2007 home invasion movie À l'intérieur (Inside). With Livid, they do it again, but the great thing about this is you don't even know going in what old clothes they're taking out of the wardrobe to dust off and make presentable again. Nor will I be revealing what that idea is. Regardless, it's safe to say that Livid is inventive, smart atmospheric, and on several occasions damn scary. Lucie, played by Chloé Coulloud, is on her first day as an in-home caregiver when she visits Mrs. Jessel's estate. Mrs. Jessel lies...

Gird your loins and peep the trailer for "The Life Zone," the world's first horror movie to push a pro-life agenda. In "Zone," three women wake up in a room where they're being held hostage. No, they haven't been trawling Eastern European hostels for good times or playing with Jigsaw; they were kidnapped while waiting to get abortions.
Too bad for them; they're being forced by a gravelly voice guy with impressive eyebrows (a priest, perhaps?) and a ruthless female doctor to stay pregnant and give birth. The room looks like a leftover set from "Saw," except with walls covered in religious paintings and symbols. Maybe writer Ken Del Vecchio has been listening to "Papa Don't Preach" a little too much?
Speaking of Del Vecchio, he's done a couple of, well, interesting films that have political overtones, such as "O.B.A.M. Nude" and "Talking Points Memo," as well as something that...

Many people claim to love horror movies. A lot of them enjoy the idea of being scared, while others dig on scary monsters and of course there are the gore fans.
We'd say that the 2007 French film 'Inside' (review here) surpasses many of those "safe" boundaries for horror movie enjoyment. Every so often a brutal film such as 'Inside' comes along and really reaches deep into the soul of its viewer and yanks at some rather dark psychological issues.
If you've seen the film you already know what we're talking about. For those who haven't and really want to dip your toe into the brutal extreme horror film genre, you'll definitely want to check this flick out. But don't say we didn't warn you, because it's not for the faint of heart.
'Inside' Synopsis:
Inside (À l'intérieur) is a 2007 French horror film directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, starring Alysson Paradis and Béatrice Dalle.

I'm fairly certain that I've only walked out of two movies in my life. The first was when my parents took me to see E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Since I was only about six, E.T. scared the ever-living crap out of me. I started screaming, and my parents got me out of there. (Yeah, it's really, really annoying for us when kids cry at movies, but it's pretty crappy for them too!) I'm not sure if this counts, but I watched Mask in second or third grade with my eyes closed the entire time and, in fact, am still terrified of seeing Rocky's face. (Last year some friends and I did exposure therapy with pictures of him online, but I guess it didn't entirely take. I have seen The Elephant Man, though, which is a far better movie, anyway. I even had both eyes open.)
But the only movie I've ever walked out of was Outbreak,...
