After only a few weeks, there's already a new Willy Loomis. It wasn't until I saw the credits that I realized that he had been recast, and John Karlen who would go on to prime time TV fame takes over the part in preparation for the real twists concerning his story. The only noticeable difference in the looks is his darker hair. Of course, Elizabeth is suspicious of Burke's motives but Victoria goes out of her way to assure Elizabeth that Burke means well. It's obvious that Elizabeth doesn't want Burke of all people to know her secret, and when Elizabeth witnesses Burke stand up to Willie, she can tell his desire to protect her and the other women is sincere. But her fear over being exposed has her declining his offer.
A scene between Willie and Mrs. Johnson has him questioning her over the family jewels, especially the ring on Barnabas's finger and the brooch he wears. You really get to see a bit more of the family history and the gothic intrigue that will make the Laura Collins mystery seem like something out of "Murder She Wrote" rather than Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley or Edgar Allan Poe. As usual, Clarice Blackburn makes something out of nothing, and her limited screen time has her commanding every moment.
