Henry Beckman has just moved to Chicago to stay in a relationship with his girlfriend. Only a few days later, she decides she wants to end the relationship, and sends him out onto the streets. With no friends in the city and no relatives, he looks for a cheap apartment in Chicago. His eye falls upon an advertisement placed by one Larry Cone, to which he responds, only to find that Larry is a sardonic, pitiless. Despite his rough demeanor, Larry lets his guard down begins to help Henry reconstruct the tattered remains of his life.
