Grégoire Ludig, David Marsais, Adèle Exarchopoulos and India Hair are among the cast of this Chi-Fou-Mi production, co-produced by Memento and Artémis, which will be sold by WTFilms and Wild Bunch. Since 16 September, the highly original Quentin Dupieux has been in the South of France shooting Mandibules, his eighth feature, following Steak (2006), Rubber (Cannes Critics’ Week in 2010), Wrong (in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at Sundance in 2012), Wrong Cops (Piazza Grande at Locarno in 2013), Reality (Orizzonti at Venice in 2014), Keep an Eye Out (Best Screenplay Award at Sitges in 2018) and Deerskin (which opened the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight this year). To topline the cast, the filmmaker has called upon the services of Grégoire Ludig and David Marsais, a comedy duo also known as Palmashow, who turned heads on the big screen in movies such as Babysitting, and with the former having also played one of...
While the official lineup for the 2019 Cannes Film Festival won’t arrive until after this month, Directors’ Fortnight has announced Quentin Dupieux will bring his seventh feature film “Deerskin” to the prestigious sidebar competition as the opening night selection. “Deerskin,” starring “The Artist” Oscar winner Jean Dujardin and French favorite Adèle Haenel, will world premiere May 15, ahead of the film’s June 19 theatrical release in France.
“Deerskin” is a thriller starring Dujardin as a man who is forced into a life of crime after becoming obsessed with buying a new jacket and losing all of his savings in his attempts to own it. Dujardin has a rich history at the Cannes Film Festival, having won Best Actor at the festival in 2011 for “The Artist.” “Deerskin” will be Dujardin’s first leading role at Cannes since “The Artist” dominated eight years ago.

The relationship between man and dog is a fascinating one. Canines are man’s best friend and when something drastic happens that comes between both species, decisive action must be taken. This is the premise of the very weird indy comedy Wrong which tells a very simple story in a very bizarre and somewhat confusing way. Filmmaker/musician Quentin Dupieux (Rubber, Steak) has put together a film that will not only entertain but will leave you scratching your head and wanting more.

Many musicians have dabbled with movies, but few have stuck it out and become as well known separately for their film work as director/d.p./editor Quentin Dupieux. Formerly best known as electronica artist Mr. Oizo, Dupieux began making short films at age 15. His first two features — 2002′s Nonfilm and Steak — didn’t attract attention outside of France, but 2010′s Rubber introduced him to a wider audience. The film follows killer tire Robert’s deadly road trip across California, beginning with a direct-to-the-audience monologue from actor Stephen Spinella explaining Dupieux’s philosophy of narrative and his bizarre sense of humor. “In the …...

In conjunction with La Furia Umana, Notebook is very happy to present Ted Fendt's original English translation of Luc Moullet's "Le masque et la part de Dieu," on the films of Eric Rohmer. Moullet's original French can be found at La Furia Umana.
Cecil summed up the difference between him and his brother, William DeMille, like this: “I show a thousand camels and you show one camel and you psychoanalyze it.” Eric Rohmer is a lot more like William than Cecil, minus Freud.
What is fascinating, foremost, in his work is his obstinacy to not go beyond his only or main subject, often summed up, in a somewhat misleading way, by its title: Béatrice Romand wants a good marriage, or, at least, to help her friend have one (A Tale of Autumn), Brialy wants to caress Claire’s Knee (meaning, to be sure that she is practically consenting), Lucchini,...

One of the many films I saw at Fantastic Fest 2010 was Rubber. I think it is a film that is best viewed with an audience, especially considering the message it tries to convey. However, I think it is a film that all genre and non-genre film fans should watch. It is incredibly meta thought that some casual filmgoers might not “get” it. If you are reading this site, I think it is safe to say you are not a casual filmgoer. You like to ride the edge of the genre. See how far it can go before going over the edge. This film is for you. It has the gore that some of you horror fiends will want to see but be prepared to see a wild, nonsensical – but sensical meaning – film. Magnolia Home Entertainment released the Blu-Ray this past Tuesday. Is it worth the cash to put it on your shelf?...

Director: Quentin Dupieux. Review: Adam Wing. I’m going to avoid lazy car related puns on this one, because a film as original as Rubber deserves a little more creativity than that. Just when you think you’ve seen everything that the movie industry has to throw at you, along comes a road movie that dares to cast a car tyre as the lead character. Quite what French director Quentin Dupieux (Mr. Oizo of 1999’s Flat Beat fame) was smoking when he came up with the concept remains to be seen, but there’s a good chance you’ll never experience anything like it again. Just for the record, Dupieux’s previous movie was called Steak - kind of makes you wonder, doesn’t it. Rubber stars Stephen Spinella as Lieutenant Chad, a smug police officer that appears to be in on the joke - whether or not you will...

Magnet Releasing’s artsy-grindhouse film in Rubber (review here) is coming to Blu-ray and DVD June 7th as they’ve made public in a press release.
Rubber is the story of Robert, an inanimate tire that has been abandoned in the desert, and suddenly and inexplicably comes to life. As Robert roams the bleak landscape, he discovers that he possesses terrifying telepathic powers that give him the ability to destroy anything he wishes without having to move. At first content to prey on small desert creatures and various discarded objects, his attention soon turns to humans, especially a beautiful and mysterious woman who crosses his path. Leaving a swath of destruction across the desert landscape, Robert becomes a chaotic force to be reckoned with, and truly a movie villain for the ages. Directed by legendary electro musician Quentin Dupieux (Steak, Nonfilm), aka Mr. Oizo, Rubber is a smart, funny and wholly original.

Quentin Dupieux, the man behind Fantastic Fest 2010 favorite Rubber (check out our review here), has released the first image from his new film Wrong, via Twitter.
Dupieux (also known as Mr. Oizo) made a name for himself as a songwriter and producer of techno music in France in the late '90s. He made his first feature film, Steak, in 2007. Dupieux’s new film is currently filming in Los Angeles, and stars character actor William Fichtner (The Dark Knight), Jack Plotnik (who worked with Dupieux on Rubber), and Steve Little (Eastbound & Down). Little is the only actor who appears in the first image. Check it out after the break.

Why? That's the question you should never ask at the movies. In Rubber's opening sequence, a cop addresses the camera with a speech about how all films contain events that happen for "no reason". So, here, when a discarded car tyre rolls to life and starts destroying objects and then creatures with its explosive mental powers, it's best to simply accept its supernatural abilities. And why not? A similar attitude should be taken towards the characters who come up against the killer tyre, not all of whom seem to be in on what's going on, as well towards the onlookers in the film, as they comment on events they see unfurl through binoculars. It's a heady mix in which sense and reason would only get in the way. Rubber is the second feature – after the equally off-kilter Steak – from director Quentin Dupieux, best...

Quentin Dupieux is an intriguing filmmaker, and I'm very interested in tracking down his first feature film, "Steak," based on how strange and wonderful his new film "Rubber" is. I saw the film at Fantastic Fest last year, and I adored it. Why? No reason. Sorry... the "no reason" thing is a recurring joke in the film, and it feels appropriate that the film is finally hitting theaters and VOD on April 1st. It's a big broad wink of a movie, and if you're up for a little post-modern fun in a movie about a telekinetic tire that makes people's heads explode,...

This interview was originally published during AFI Fest 2010.
Anyone who has seen "Rubber" during its most unlikely of festival runs will know what a big deal it was for the film's star, Robert the tire, to finally roll into Hollywood last weekend for its premiere at AFI Fest, where the guest of honor donned a bowtie for the occasion and posed for pictures at the film's afterparty. That audience members would want to pose with a tire they had just seen crush bugs, explode rabbits and eventually blow up the human population of a small desert town with its mind is a testament to the strength of the simple idea at the core of Quentin Dupieux's sharp absurdist comic thriller. (For a contrary point of view, see my colleague Matt Singer's review of the film.)

You may remember a few weeks ago we unveiled the trailer for what has to be the most peculiar film of the year, if not of the last ten years – Rubber. So taken with the outlandish premise were we, that the trailer also featured as our clip of the week the following week.
The brain child of French director, Quentin Dupieux, Rubber tells the story of a discarded tyre, “Robert” who, having been abandoned in the Californian desert, suddenly comes to life and discovers his deadly telepathic powers. Now with nothing left to lose (except maybe some tyre tread) and a thirst for blood, Robert is on the rampage, and no one is safe.
Well with that in mind, Rubber has an awesome new poster to go along with it’s trailer. Featuring Robert on a bloody trailer of destruction, it’s certainly a keeper – I may have to see...

Cinemagoers have become accustomed to the idea of faceless movie serial killers thanks to the bemasked likes of Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers, Leatherface, and the assorted knife-wielding maniacs of the Scream franchise. But the new film Rubber (which is currently available on VOD and hits theaters on April 1) features a murderer who is also lacking arms, legs, and a body. In fact, the movie’s villain is a discarded car tire that, for reasons which are never even remotely explained, comes to life in the California desert and starts making people’s heads explode with his psychokinetic powers. (We know...

I can’t think of many other movies in the past, oh, five years that are as high concept as Rubber. Directed by Quentin Dupieux, the film is centered around Robert. The thing is, Robert is a tire. Who kills people. Just that idea has made me want to see the film since I first read about it months and months ago. While we had a first trailer, Hulu has been kind enough to give us a new, red band look at the movie.
And it’s a pretty fun trailer, too. There seems to be a certain confidence on display, as no real acknowledgment seems to be given of how absurd the concept is. I like that, as it makes me think that the filmmakers, while aiming for humor, actually took the movie seriously. It looks fairly beautiful; like a real movie. You can watch it below, or over...

Magnet is going to open the very strange-sounding film Rubber in theaters in April, but the movie is already playing On Demand. All those I know who have been watching the film (and who have seen it at festivals) love the picture, and I can't wait to see it. Now there is a red-band trailer to whet your appetite in case the other trailers and the Olly Moss and Boris Vallejo [1] posters didn't do the trick. If you've seen the earlier trailers for the film (here [2] and here [3]) a lot of this footage will be familiar, but this edit is pretty good. Rubber isn't a movie with a lot of really beautiful locations, but it is quite well shot. Some of the individual shots in this trailer are just beautiful. It is a red-band clip due to violence and printed profanity, so use that info at your discretion with respect...

Quentin Dupieux has directed what could be the coolest and most bizarre film ever made. Rubber is the story of a car tyre coming to life and ‘roaming the bleak landscape’ of a Us desert. Oh and it’s got telepathic powers which means it can blow shit up at will. Do you want to see it yet?
The film is released in April on Blu-ray and DVD along with several special screenings around the UK. Is Rubber destined to become a cult classic? We hope so! Check out the Us trailer and revel in the genius and sheer lunacy! French actress Roxane Mesquida is in this too! Judging from the trailer it looks like Bruno Dumont’s TwentyNine Palms via the music video by Hammer and Tongs for Blur’s Coffee and T.V. track… or something like that.

(Check out the trailer here. [1]) One of the best ways to sell it might be to key in on the simple stuff, like women and the sense of strange that pervades the movie. We've already seen a poster for the film, created by Olly Moss for Fantastic Fest [2], but this is an image in a totally different direction. Boris Vallejo was famously the cover artist for fantasy and sci-fi paperbacks, and has done occasional movie poster work over the years. (The first two Vacation movies, and the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie, for example.) Now he's back to sell Rubber, and his image...

Apple has debuted a new poster for kooky French dude Quentin Dupieux’s killer rubber movie, “Rubber”. Please to enjoy. Oizo, Rubber is a smart, funny and wholly original tribute to the cinematic concept of no reason.

French filmmaker and music-producer Quentin Dupieux’s killer tire movie ‘Rubber’. Who knows why Robert the killer tire comes to life and goes on a murderous rampage and who really cares? This nonsensical tale of a tire with a vicious streak seems so retarded, I feel compelled to watch it. Believe it or not, ‘Rubber’ played at Cannes Fantastic Fest, AFI and a few others to surprisingly good reviews. Magnet picked up the film, which will be released to VOD on February 25, then in theaters on April 1.Even though it’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard, I would watch it. If only for the exploding heads.Synopsis: Rubber is the story of Robert, an inanimate tire that has been abandoned in the desert, and suddenly and inexplicably comes to life. A trailer for Rubber is now available online. Written, directed, and scored by Quentin Dupieux, Rubber is without a doubt one of the oddest films to come out last year – a comedy / horror / coming-of-age piece about a killer tire with telepathic powers which he uses frequently to explode the heads of his victims.
To check out the trailer for yourself, hit the jump. Rubber played the Fantasia Film Festival last year and I got a very positive review of the film here.
It will be available on-demand on February 25th before hitting theaters April 1st.

You've already seen a short teaser trailer [1] for Quentin Dupieux’s killer tire movie Rubber but now that its April 1 release date [2] is fast approaching, Magnet has released the real deal: a two-and-a-half minute glimpse at one of the most unique films to get a release in recent years. Having experience this movie first hand, here's my 2 cents on this trailer. It gives away a lot. You don't know it's doing so, it just looks like a bunch of really weird images edited together, but if any of those images stick in your head, they could hypothetically taint your enjoyment of this absolutely original, you-don't-know-where-it's-going film. Still, a lot of you don't care about that sort of thing and if you don't, you're gonna love this trailer. Check it out after the jump. To check out the trailer in full, glorious HD, head over to Apple [3]. Here's the plot description of Rubber.

In "Rubber," directed by Quentin Dupieux, why does a tire inexplicably come to life and devote that life to killing things? No reason. This film, as bizarre a concept as it might be to wrap your head around (not the-tire-coming-to-life part, but the part about things happening incessantly for no reason), is quite a comical film.
The movie opens with a nervous-looking man holding a few dozen binoculars in each hand on a dirt road littered with upright chairs blocking the path. A car barrels down the path knocking over each chair. The car stops, the trunk pops open and a sheriff (Stephen Spinella) pops out holding a glass of water. He begins to explain the concept of “no reason” in what appears to be an attempt to break the fourth wall but he is really talking to a group of spectators behind a velvet rope.
