Master Detective
AaronCapenBanner25 September 2014
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous literary creation has enthralled and influenced readers and authors from all over the world for well over a century, to the extent that some believe that the master detective of 221B Baker street, London England was a real person, which presumably extends to his friend and colleague Doctor John Watson as well. Certainly, they were some thrilling tales, and played by many different actors, though the only weak point of this episode is the over-reliance on clips from older and obscure films of grainy quality(What, no Basil Rathbone?) Still manages to be entertaining, yet a bit disappointing as a result of this.

He really did exist!
dtucker866 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A lot of people don't realize that some fictional characters have real life counterparts. For example, when novelist Robert Bloch wrote his book Psycho he based the character of Norman Bates on a real life serial killer with a mother hang up named Ed Gein or Sylvester Stallone based Rocky Balboa on Chuck Wepner a club fighter from New Jersey who almost beat Muhammad Ali. This episode points out that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based our most beloved fictional gum shoe Sherlock Holmes on a real person in this case it was Doyle's medical school professor Doctor Joseph Bell. This is a fascinating In Search Of because it points out the fact that Doyle played detective in real life and helped to exonerate an innocent man.

Warning: Spoilers
Logical Watson! Just like a Sherlock Holmes novel/ movie In search Sherlock Holmes looks logically into the legend. Of course, there is the back ground about the novels, movies, and T V about the fictional character. The characteristics of the fictional character are examined. Did the author have a real life influences for the fictional character. In Search of theories are about the Sherlock Holmes authors friend who had similar characteristics to Holmes. The friend was cunning, logically, kind, and tenacious with fixing a problems just like the fictional character. The investigation of the real life mysteries and real life Sherlock Holmes are tone down from the fictional character and stories. Believable episode. How many scripts, stories etc by writers were influence by the writers real life experience or real life stories influenced writers' stories. Documentary style episode, with interviews, reenactments etc. 6 out of 10 stars.

In Search Of... "Sherlock Holmes" (1978)

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his creation of Sherlock Holmes is the rather bizarre subject for this entry in the series. I must admit that I was a little shocked to see Holmes covered in the series but it turned out to be a pretty good episode, although I think it's going to appeal to film buffs more than your average fan of the series. We basically learn about the Holmes character and how he rose in popularity on the stage and movie screen. We then learn about Doyle and the various research that he did for the character and then we learn about how much of Doyle was actually in Holmes. Again, this is a pretty bizarre subject for this series but it makes for an entertaining episode. Fans of Holmes will be the ones that enjoy this the most as the story on the subject is well-told and entertaining.

Episode: B+
