- Karen Hayes: [while in her office] so what's going on? It sounded urgent
- Karen Hayes: You know I've interrogating reed Pollack? Tom's chief of staff after his arrest
- Karen Hayes: [Sarcastically] that must be pleasant
- Peter Hock: Pollack's looking at a probable death sentence for his part in the attempted assassination of Wayne Palmer: out of desperation his offering up everything he knows hoping you'll show some "leniency"
- Karen Hayes: What does that have to do with me?
- Peter Hock: [Before taking out his laptop and playing a video file] not just you, this involves your husband as well, take a look
- Peter Hock: [after playing the video of Pollack's interrogation] do me a favor and save me some time: is it true or not?
- Karen Hayes: The facts are true but there's no "cover up" here. About two years ago, we apprehended Fayed as part of a FBI/CTU "border sweep." There wasn't enough evidence to hold him, he was one of many, and he "maybe" a "mid-level player"
- Peter Hock: And that turned out to be wrong
- Peter Hock: [Sitting down] so why was it blue coded?
- Karen Hayes: Every year thousands of suspects are arrested, if there isn't enough evidence to hold them, their released, and blue coded. That's just standard procedure, the only way to "guarantee" that no one becomes a threat is to hold them and deprive them of their rights and freedoms
- Peter Hock: Alright then, if this was a "no fault", why did this carry so much with you twelve hours ago? Why did you resign? Rather than have this "come out"?
- Karen Hayes: Come on, we were under attack, there was no way I was going to let this information touch the President or my husband. They needed to lead us through this crisis unimpeded
- Peter Hock: Here we are: twelve hours later, Palmer's in a coma, the country's in shock over losing over thirteen thousand innocent lives, and all people are going to be asking is "who let this happen?"
- Karen Hayes: Certainly not my husband, he has devoted to his life to this country
- Peter Hock: This isn't "my call", but I think you know how this "works", someone's going to have to go down and the farther from the President, the better
- Karen Hayes: So, what "exactly" are you saying?
- Peter Hock: It's either going to be you or Bill. Bill would be my preference, his lower on the "food chain" but you'll do
- Ellen Price: [to the press] ladies and gentlemen, I have a brief statement and I will not be taking any questions at this time: the President is on route to the Bethesda Naval Hospital and will arrive shortly. The doctors have no idea whether President Palmer will come out of his coma in hours, days, or weeks. Vice President Daniels will be addressing the country at 9am Eastern time, thank you
- Vice President Noah Daniels: [Talking privately] we need to "clear the air", you and I: you still have evidence that could hurt me and I'd like to know what your intentions are?
- Tom Lennox: Truthfully sir, I haven't given it much thought
- Vice President Noah Daniels: Why don't you think about it now?
- Tom Lennox: Alright sir, it "concerns" me that you engaged in conspiracy and perjury to achieve "political ends", I don't think that behavior is be fitting of the acting President of the United States
- Vice President Noah Daniels: The world has changed in the last half hour. Right now this country above all, needs stability, not brought up on charges in the first hours of his Presidency. America needs elected leadership
- Tom Lennox: I'd just like to complete my thoughts sir, I made that tape to back you off President Palmer but also to protect "me." Now that "was" and "remains" my only reason
- Vice President Noah Daniels: What about forcing my resignation?
- Tom Lennox: Wayne Palmer's idea: not mine
- Vice President Noah Daniels: So you're ok with me in this chair?
- Tom Lennox: Sir, it's no secret that policy-wise, you and I are in alignment, I just simply "hate" how we got "here"
- Vice President Noah Daniels: Now that we are "here"?
- Tom Lennox: Yes sir, you have my support
- Vice President Noah Daniels: In the event that we ever get "out of alignment", I can't have you holding this evidence over my head
- Tom Lennox: Its understood sir, you have my word
- Morris O'Brian: [Feeling insulted after she asks Milo for help instead of him] that's a really good idea, you should ask Milo: get cozy
- Chloe O'Brian: Could you please stop acting like this? I really hate it
- Morris O'Brian: Why don't you write down the way you want me to "act", put it in a file, tab it the way Milo likes it, and "shove it"
- Chloe O'Brian: Ok, I'll write it down, first I'll write it down. First, don't be such a jealous jerk
- Chloe O'Brian: The day I'm jealous, is the day I kill myself, is there anything else?
- Chloe O'Brian: How about don't arm nuclear bombs for terrorists?
- Chloe O'Brian: [after she realizes she crosses the line] sorry, I didn't mean that. That's not how I feel
- Morris O'Brian: Yeah it is
- Chloe O'Brian: [while he walks away] no, it's not, it just slipped out of my mouth
- Karen Hayes: I spoke with Bill and he "assures" me CTU has deployed all their resources to find Bauer
- Vice President Noah Daniels: I don't want to near about their "assurances", they let Bauer steal the component: so their "assurances" means nothing
- Tom Lennox: If I may sir, I could authorize ancillary agencies to join the search that would increase our chances of finding Bauer
- Vice President Noah Daniels: Do it
- Lisa Miller: [after Tom and Karen leave] is there anything else you need from me?
- Vice President Noah Daniels: Is there anything else I need from you? Let me think, I have the fate of the western world and the lives of millions of Americans hanging in the balance, I can't stop thinking about you
- Lisa Miller: [while he hugs and kisses her, sarcastically] I'm not sure this is appropriate behavior Mr. "acting President"
- Vice President Noah Daniels: Well there's the phone: call the media and tell them the "acting President" is a "dirty old man"
- Lisa Miller: [Before they kiss] they already know
- Vice President Noah Daniels: I would you to spend what's left of the night here with me
- Lisa Miller: I'll go home and pick up a change of clothes
- Jack Bauer: [Leaving a message on Bill's cell phone] I'm about to meet with Cheng in exchange the FB sub circuit board for Audrey. Hopefully by the time you hear this, she'll be safe and in your custody, I know I promised the President I would give him confirmation the circuit board did not fall into the wrong hands: this message is your confirmation. The circuit board will be incinerated in the explosion. The meeting will take place at the Calderone Motel off highway 305. Please take care of Audrey, thank you. You've been a good friend
- Bill Buchanan: [after Morris enters Bill's office] what is it?
- Morris O'Brian: [Hands him a piece of paper] I'd like to request a transfer
- Bill Buchanan: Why?
- Morris O'Brian: I need to get out of COMM
- Bill Buchanan: Do you want to elaborate on that?
- Morris O'Brian: Not really. No
- Bill Buchanan: You and Chloe having problems?
- Morris O'Brian: You could say that: yes
- Bill Buchanan: I'd hate to lose you in COMM, can we talk about this in the morning?
- Morris O'Brian: Nothing's going to change
- Bill Buchanan: You don't know that
- Morris O'Brian: I do. Look, figure out where you want me put me: anywhere is fine. Just get me out of COMM
- Bill Buchanan: Alright, I'll work "something" out that's good for everyone involved
- Morris O'Brian: Thank you
- Bill Buchanan: [Over the phone] I have a minute: you wanted to talk about "something?"
- Karen Hayes: The DOJ investigator found out about Seattle, when you and Homeland had Fayed in custody
- Bill Buchanan: "Found out"? It wasn't a secret: we did everything by the book, I can deal with DOJ
- Karen Hayes: Yeah I know but the problem is they're out for blood. I can't let this "touch" me
- Bill Buchanan: "Touch" you? What're you talking about? Why is this suddenly an issue? Are you concerned I might "implicate" you?
- Karen Hayes: No, but obviously there's "guilt by association" here
- Bill Buchanan: Their looking for a scapegoat
- Karen Hayes: Yes, the pundits and the press are looking for "anything" to attack the Administration
- Bill Buchanan: What're you saying?
- Karen Hayes: I have to protect the White House and in order to do that I have to distance myself from you
- Bill Buchanan: How are you going to do that? I'm your husband
- Bill Buchanan: [after Karen doesn't respond] you're asking me to resign?
- Karen Hayes: No, I have to fire you
- Bill Buchanan: Who's pressuring you?
- Karen Hayes: This is the only way this can "work" and it has to happen immediately or I'll be viewed as complicit and my ability to stay on as National Security Advisor will be undermined
- Bill Buchanan: Undermined? We're talking about the end of my career
- Karen Hayes: You don't think I've thought this through?
- Bill Buchanan: No, I don't
- Karen Hayes: You don't think that I don't know what this means to you?
- Bill Buchanan: [Raises his voice] no, I don't. Because the public will make "assumptions" that don't exist: thirteen thousand American lives lost, I had the man in custody who was responsible and I released him. It won't matter that I had no evidence to "hold" him
- Karen Hayes: You know how this "works." One of us has to take the fall and it can't be me, I'm too close to the President
- Bill Buchanan: I can't believe I'm hearing this: who is pressuring you? What're you not saying?
- Karen Hayes: You have to trust me on this. We will get through this, I promise and I love you and that's all that should matter here
- Bill Buchanan: Is it?
- Karen Hayes: [Before he hangs up] yes
- Bill Buchanan: [Talking privately] I'm stepping down as Director of CTU
- Nadia Yassir: What? What happened?
- Bill Buchanan: All I can say is, I have to step down
- Nadia Yassir: Sir, this doesn't make any sense: why would you quit now of all days?
- Bill Buchanan: I'm not quitting, I was fired
- Nadia Yassir: By who?
- Bill Buchanan: It doesn't matter, I've contacted Division: for now you're Acting Director
- Nadia Yassir: Sir, we're in the middle of fifty different things here, why would they do this to you now?
- Bill Buchanan: I can't talk about it. You have to accept it and do the best you can
- Nadia Yassir: No, I don't understand why they would fire you. You're the most ethical, dedicated person I've ever known. There's no way you did anything to justify this. Damn it, what is going on?
- Bill Buchanan: It's just "politics." Division will be sending over an Interim Director in the next few hours. In the meantime, you can handle anything that comes up
- Nadia Yassir: What about the extra redundancies and everything else that I've had to go through today? I'm not the "right choice" to take over
- Bill Buchanan: I've lifted all the restrictions on your security clearance: you shouldn't have any trouble running CTU. You are the "right choice"
- Nadia Yassir: I don't know what to say
- Bill Buchanan: Stay on top of the situation with Jack
- Nadia Yassir: I will
- Bill Buchanan: No one else knows I'm leaving. You have to inform them before it's posted on the internal forms
- Nadia Yassir: I'll tell them
- Nadia Yassir: [Addressing CTU staff] can I have everyone's attention please? In a few minutes, you're going to be getting a bulletin on your systems. Bill Buchanan has stepped down: which means until Division can send over a replacement, his named me Acting Director. Nothing will change operationally. The objective remains the same, bring in Jack Bauer before he can handle over the component to the Chinese
