French authorities have dismissed the sexual assault complaint filed against Gérard Depardieu by French actress Hélène Darras due to the local statute of limitations.
Darras lodged the complaint, related to events on the set of the 2007 dance comedy Disco, with the Paris Prosecutor’s Office on September 10, 2023. The case was first reported by France 2’s investigative show Complément d’Enquête in teased extracts of an edition devoted to Depardieu and the multiple sexual misconduct allegations against him.
In the show’s interview with Darras, she recounted how Depardieu hounded her on the set of Disco when she was a 26-year-old novice actress. She had a small role as a dance competition contestant in the comedy, directed by Fabien Onteniente and starring Franck Dubosc with Depardieu in a supporting role.

Some 600 French art and entertainment world figures have signed a “counter-petition” decrying moves to defend iconic actor Gérard Depardieu in the face of multiple accusations of sexual assault and one of rape.
The petition described a recent open letter in support of Depardieu, signed by 56 cinema world celebrities, and French President Emmanuel Macron’s public defense of the actor on a talkshow before Christmas as a slap in the face for all victims of sexual violence.
“It is the sinister and perfect illustration of the world which refuses to let things change,” read the letter posted on the site of investigative news website Mediapart on Friday.
“It is the reversal of roles where the executioner places himself as a victim, with the help of his friends. As always in cases of gender-based and sexual violence against women, the ‘presumption...

Fifty-six French stars, including Carla Bruni, Charlotte Rampling and Carole Bouquet, signed an open letter defending Gerard Depardieu, the Oscar-nominated actor who has been charged with rape and accused by more than a dozen other women of sexual assault, harassment or groping.
The essay, published in the conservative-leaning French newspaper Le Figaro, reads, in part: “We cannot remain silent in the face of the lynching targeting him, the torrent of hate being dumped on his personality” (via AP). “When Gerard Depardieu is targeted this way, it is the art [of cinema] that is being attacked. … Depriving ourselves of this immense actor would be a drama, a defeat. The death of the art. Our art.”
Other signatories included actors Pierre Richard, Victoria Abril and Nathalie Baye, and directors Bertrand Blier and Francis Veber.
Depardieu has not been convicted in connection with any of the allegations and denies wrongdoing. He called the open letter “beautiful” and its signatories “courageous,...

Some 50 French entertainment personalities have signed an open letter speaking out against the public “lynching” and cancelling of Gérard Depardieu in the wake of multiple accusations of sexual assault and one of rape.
The signatories include former first lady, top model and musician Carla Bruni as well as popular actors Charlotte Rampling, Carole Bouquet, Nathalie Baye and Pierre Richard.
The signatories said they did not want to pass comment on the accusations against Depardieu but could not remain silent in the face of the backlash against the actor in recent weeks.
“We are artists, writers and cinema producers. It’s in this capacity that we’re expressing ourselves here,” read the letter, published in Le Figaro newspaper on Christmas Day.
“We don’t want to enter into debate, and we leave the judiciary to do its job. Gérard Depardieu is probably one the greatest actors. One of the last sacred icons of cinema.

“I’m a big admirer of Gerard Depardieu,” said Emmanuel Macron candidly on the set of C’est à vous, the primetime TV magazine, when asked to comment on the downfall of Depardieu, the revered French actor who’s facing new sexual assault accusations and has crystallized a new tide of #MeToo in France.
“He’s an immense actor, who has delivered some of the most beautiful texts. He made France known, our greatest authors, our greatest characters, across the world,” said Macron. “I’ll say it as France president but also as a citizen, he makes France proud.”
Depardieu was indicted on Dec. 16, 2020 regarding allegations of rape and sexual assault tied to a 2018 lawsuit filed by actor Charlotte Arnould, but it took a bombshell investigative documentary, Complement d’Enquête, to provoke real outrage in France. Emmanuelle Debever, the French actress who was the first to accuse Gérard Depardieu of sexual assault, has died by suicide aged 60.
She passed away on December 7 after jumping into the Seine river, according to local news reports that were later confirmed by police officials, who have classified the death as suicide. Her death came on on the same day that a TV show documenting the sexual assault allegations against Depardieu was broadcast.
The program, part of France 2’s investigative news show Complément d’Enquête, included allegations from Debever. She accused Depardieu of assault during the filming of Andrzej Wajda’s 1982 period drama Danton.
This wasn’t the first time she’d made the allegations. In 2019, Debever wrote a short message on Facebook, accusing Depardieu of “sliding his fat paw under my skirt” as they rode in a carriage on set, adding: “I didn’t allow it to happen.”

The Star Trek: Discovery season 2 premiere is at its best when it doesn't rely on Star Trek nostalgia.
Star Trek: Discovery Season 2 Episode 1
A world without a Star Trek TV show regularly airing new episodes is a slightly darker world. Thankfully, we are now back in a slightly lighter timeline: Star Trek: Discovery is back!
For those who were frustrated with the action-oriented frenzy of the first season, Star Trek: Discovery season 2 is not going to totally assuage those frustrations. There is a commitment to the wonder of scientific exploration in certain parts of this season premiere--most notably, in the delightful introduction of Tig Notaro's Engineer Denise Reno--but this first episode is weighed down (with little pay off thus far) by the angsty mystery of Michael's mysterious, absent brother.
For an episode called "Brother," the story is not as focused on the relationship between Michael and Spock as you might think.

The AppleThe musical possesses a unique form of power rarely afforded to other Hollywood genres. In the words of film scholar Rick Altman, “The musical invites us to forget familiar notions of plot, psychological motivation, and causal relationships.” In contrast to other commercial genres, the musical is almost one-of-a-kind in its ability to arrest time and space, to suspend disbelief, to defy our lived understanding of human relationships and even the very conventions of filmgoing. In what other mainstream genre can fictional characters get away with looking into the camera lens so often? Dramatic logic is replaced in the Hollywood musical by spectacle and raw emotional appeal, with singing as the defining device for such purely cinematic priorities. But what happens to the musical when singing is taken out of it? This was the conundrum of the short-lived disco musical, a sub-genre that ended as soon as it began.Popular...

Considering how many dance crazes have figured into pop since the Grammys’ founding in 1959, to say nothing of before then — the foxtrot popularized ragtime, the Lindy hop kicked off the swing era — you might think it would take less than four decades for the awards show to offer a dance-music category. But aside from 1980, when the one-and-done award for Best Disco Recording went to Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” (instead of Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop ’Till You Get Enough,” the category’s best nominee by far), it took until 1998 for the Grammys to recognize a Best Dance Recording. The winners since then have been, to say the least, safe yet puzzling — the Grammys special, if there ever was one.Back in ’98, the inaugural dance award went to disco legends Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder, who reteamed for “Carry On,” a likable track that is not...

Sharon Needles' sophomore album Taxidermy drops on Halloween. Which is fitting for a singer who says she lives every day like it's Halloween.
In anticipation of the album, People spoke to the 2012 winner of RuPaul's Drag Race about how this album differs from her first LP PG-13, her love of Halloween and how her life has changed since she became famous.
People: How is this album different from PG-13?
It's very different. PG-13 is kind of a scattered, almost movie soundtrack album, with elements of punk and metal and electronica. This one is a lot more concise. It's glued together,...

I’ve said it many times before and I’ve no doubt I’ll say it many times again, but Canadians know how to make damn good horror flicks and guess what? They also know how to do great retro-grindhouse flicks too! Yes Discopath, the tale of a man turned to murder by the beat, is another fantastic genre flick from the land that brought us He Knows You’re Alone, My Bloody Valentine and the more recent Antisocial.
Writer/director Renaud Gauthier made his name as a music video director, so it should come as no surprise that music features heavily in his first feature film, Discopath, an epic tale of trauma and turntables:

When Donna Summer passed away a year and a half ago (heaven knows, it’s not the way it should be), it was like a dagger in the heart for many of us who grew up listening to her music. The undisputed Queen Of Disco, she would make a successful transition out of the 70′s, and continue to churn out hits for years afterward.
Donna became “Born Again” in the early 80′s, and it would radically alter her career, as well as her relationship with the gay community. For 30 years, until her death, she was dogged by the rumor that she made a comment about AIDS being God’s punishment, and even though she vehemently denied it, It continued to persist.
It’s sad that an unprovable piece of gossip could tarnish her reputation for decades, but on this, her 65th birthday, we can take a look back at the legacy she left behind.

Broken Bells has shared the first new single off its forthcoming album "After the Disco" and it's appropriately Bee Gees-meets-psychedelic-dance rock. Listen to "Holding on for Life" below. A project by Shins' frontman James Mercer and producer Danger Mouse, Broken Bells debuted in 2010 with a self-titled album that yielded hits including "The Ghost Inside." The duo will release its follow-up, "After the Disco," in January 2014. "Holding on for Life" is the first complete new track we've heard from Broken Bells, which teased new music in an album announcement trailer and seven-minute sci-fi short film. The song opens with a funky,...

If there’s one thing you can say about the Frightfest Halloween All-Nighter it’s that the one-night only event has provided some of the most diverse horror line-ups to be screened theatrically in its meagre seven year existence – and 2013′s line-up is no different, with screenings of the eagerly awaited remake of Aussie horror Patrick, from director Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood, Machete Maidens Unleashed); Soulmate, from actress turned director Axelle Carolyn (Centurion); and the first film from former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash’s new production outfit Slasher Films, Nothing Left To Fear. And as if those weren’t enough, this years retro screening is the awesome, and formerly banned in the UK, Mark of the Devil, from director Michael Armstrong.
This years London event is scheduled for Saturday 26th October from 6.30pm and will be located for the third year at the Vue, West End. Tickets (costing...

Might what we know as Disco actually contain hidden meanings, despite attempts by "revisionists" to re-shape it as as a misunderstood culture of protest? Through interviews with the likes of Gloria Gaynor, The Village People, Kool and the Gang, and others, along with a goldmine of stock footage and speculative reenactments, The Secret Disco Revolution presents a comical investigation into disco and its "mysterious longevity." A glittery pop journey into the moral-political-aesthetic soul of Disco, the most famously flakey pop form that will not die. From the current “silent disco” craze to evergreen concert queen Donna Summer, filmmaker Jamie Kastner bops verite-style from...

Future Cinema is back. Would ya just watch the hair!
Garish three-piece suits, lashings of leopard print leotards and dazzlingly kitsch jumpsuits are just a few of the questionable fashion choices you’ll be greeted with when you step through the doors of Odyssey 2001. With the likes of Daft Punk leading a mini revival of disco at the moment, Future Cinema’s funky seventies-themed Saturday Night Fever evenings couldn’t have come at a better time.
Once again giving London’s East End venue Troxy a dazzling cinematic make-over (a similarly impressive feat was achieved there in February with Casablanca) the aforementioned Brooklyn discothèque weekend hangout for the ridiculously coiffured Tony Manero and his buddies has been brought to vivid life once more. Complete with illuminated flooring for the revellers to strut their stuff (spurred on by an enthusiastic, leather-clad DJ), the atmosphere for the evening had an altogether looser...

So there’s this little known French duo, a pair of producers, who go by the name of Daft Punk. They did alright for themselves around the turn of the new millennium, but then no one really heard from them for some time. It looks like they’re trying to make something of a comeback this year and have released this album quite quietly on the down-low with no real fanfare for its arrival or anything, but good luck to them I say. A bit of back story on them? Well, okay, it’s all kind of boring really, but…
Yeah, I thought that was a bit unlikely. You know who Daft Punk are, I know who Daft Punk are and since the announcement of this new album, and the expertly delivered promotional campaign along with it, it seems everyone and their everyone knows who Daft Punk are and always have.

The sparkly jumpsuit strikes again! This time Jennifer Hudson dazzled in the body-con design at the 28th Annual Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony on Thursday night in Los Angeles.
The Grammy Award-winning singer was on hand to pay tribute to musical icon Donna Summer, who sadly passed away last May but is one of this year's Hall of Fame inductees.
J Hud paid homage to the Disco Queen's timeless music and sensational style by performing "Bad Girls" and "Last Dance" while decked out in a rhinestoned, one-shouldered catsuit by Pamella Roland and a big curly mane. Donna would be proud!
The 31-year-old singer and Weight Watchers spokeswoman is quite the chameleon, this isn't the first time she has channeled an icon. Last year she donned one of Whitney Houston's famous 80s looks while honoring the fallen star.
