A long time ago, a grade-schooler got his hands on a spaceship. He followed the assembly instructions as best he could, snapping on the cannons, the landing gear, the tiny interstellar-chess table. Soon enough, Rian Johnson was holding his very own Millennium Falcon. "The first thing I did," he recalls, "was throw it across the room, to see how it would look flying." He grins. "And it broke."

The Corner Show #1 discovered and curated by Drew McWeeny The following is the first installment in a new regular feature here at HitFix. People are fascinated by stories of films that were almost made, and we've certainly dug into that subject in the past. This is a new way of doing that in an ongoing format, and we hope you enjoy what is meant to be a game, a fun way of looking at an alternate movie history. It is safe to say that I had a very challenging 2014. So maybe what happened was a complete break with reality. Who could blame me? There's only so much anyone can take, and I've certainly had my own limits tested recently. So trust me.. at first, I considered forgetting all about what happened this past weekend and never writing a word about it. But it was so strange and so special that...

2014 was an incredibly rewarding year to be a comics reader. Veteran creators, like Grant Morrison, Kurt Busiek, and Matt Wagner continued to churn out some of the best work of their career while new creators, like Noelle Stevenson, Babs Tarr, and Tula Lotay had very strong starts. Marvel and DC published their fair share of events, including Original Sin, Multiversity, Spider-Verse, and seemingly a half-dozen Green Lantern crossovers, but they also took risks with new characters like Ms. Marvel, a mysterious female Thor, and the cast of Gotham Academy. Marvel and DC artists went far away from any semblance of a house style from the tapestry-like spreads of Elektra‘s Michael del Mundo, the Silver Age revivals of Silver Surfer‘s Mike Allred and She-Hulk‘s Javier Pulido, and the stylish character designs and Instagram-style layouts of Babs Tarr’s Batgirl among many others.
But Image Comics was the real...

2014 has been a landmark year for comic book movies. Not only did we get two of Marvel's best-ever films (Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier), but the major studios announced enough future superhero adaptations to take us all the way up to 2019.
It's been a pretty landmark year for comic books too. It feels as though more genuinely exciting new titles launched in 2014 than in the past ten years combined, with DC, Marvel and especially Image taking big risks and creating some seriously compelling comics in the process.
We've picked out our 14 favourite comics from this year in terms of big-screen potential:
14. Spread
The Comic: On paper, Spread doesn't sound like the most original book on the market. Like The Walking Dead, it's set in a post-apocalyptic world where survivors fight off gruesome monsters and each other. As with The Thing, those monsters are giant shape-shifting...

TVLine has learned exclusively that Laura Mennell, who played the “suggestive” Nina on Syfy’s Alphas, has joined Haven Season 5 in the recurring role of a brilliant (and, well, beautiful) epidemiologist from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who fears the titular town is on the verge of a deadly viral outbreak.
Mennell’s character is described as “a force to be reckoned with,” as Audrey (played by Emily Rose), Nathan (Lucas Bryant) and Duke (Eric Balfour) quickly will discover.

Welcome to Issue 12 of ‘The Marvelous Da7e!’
Real quick mission statement: this column is for discussion of superhero movie news and superhero movies. Titular allegiance aside, this sphere includes non-Marvel properties.
This week: What we can learn by defining Howard The Duck.
Pardon me, but I’ve been re-watching Howard The Duck. The 1986 live-action creature-feature “sci-fi/comedy,” PG-rated zoophilia and notorious flop.
It’s not a good movie. It’s an enjoyable movie, but not because of what is on screen…okay, scratch-that. It has the most physically attractive appearence of Lea Thompson on film and this time, she’s not the mother of our main character, so you can totally lust after her up until the end where it seems like she’s actually going to have sex with this duck.
Ducks, who – by the way – are basically rapists across the board. But that’s neither here nor there.

One of the cops of "Rookie Blue" is taking up medicine. On the home screen, at least.
Eric Johnson, currently seen on the Canadian-made ABC police drama on a recurring basis as Detective Luke Callaghan -- ex-fiance of Officer Andy McNally (Missy Peregrym) -- has been cast in "The Knick," an upcoming Cinemax medical series with an impressive pedigree.
Also an executive producer of the show, "Traffic" Oscar winner and current "Behind the Candelabra" Emmy nominee Steven Soderbergh will direct the entire first season of the drama about a New York hospital at the start of the 20th century, when treatment methods were relatively primitive and regularly tested doctors' skills.
Johnson will play one such medic who works under Knickerbocker Hospital's chief surgeon (Clive Owen, in his first TV acting since his Emmy nomination last year for HBO's "Hemingway & Gellhorn").

Eric Johnson may not be a "Rookie Blue" regular anymore, but he still feels at home any time he returns as Detective Luke Callaghan.
He does so again in "Skeletons," Thursday's (July 25) episode as Season 4 of the Canadian-made ABC police drama continues. Luke is back at 15 Division to work with the cops -- including his ex-fiancee, Officer Andy McNally (Missy Peregrym) -- to find a missing girl who may have been taken by a kidnapper copying the felon who abducted Officer Gail Peck (Charlotte Sullivan) last season.

It looks like our summer is shaping up very nicely, thanks to some excellent scheduling by The Powers That Be. At least our weekends will be taken care of. True Blood will almost certainly return in its usual Sunday at 9/8c slot, so there’s Sunday sorted. We told you earlier today that Zero Hour will be airing Saturdays at 8/7c, which fits in perfectly with this latest scheduling announcement: Primeval: New World will be airing Saturdays at 9/8c, followed by Sinbad at 10/9c on Syfy.
You may recall that we told you about the Syfy pickup of Primeval: New World back in October. You’ll recognize it as a spinoff from the original Primeval which aired here originally on BBC America. You’ll also recognize the star, Niall Matter, as Zane from the late great Eureka. Primeval: New World is another series acquired by Syfy from our pals up in Canada,...

We have been reading, longingly, about the upcoming Canadian spinoff of the UK dinosaurs-in-the-modern-world series Primeval entitled Primeval: New World. We thought it would be fun. Then when we heard Niall Matter (Zane on Eureka) had been cast, we got even more jealous of our northern neighbors. Then when we heard it would be promoted as “darker and scarier” than the original series from whence it sprung, it sounded right up our alley. But since it wasn’t literally up Our alley, we sat and stewed.
But that is all behind us now as we rejoice over today’s announcement that Syfy has picked up the series for the U.S. market. First we have a trailer for you to check out, so that you can be as excited as we are, before getting to the details of the press release:

Cult character actor Michael Ironside has a long list of worthy accomplishments. He played the brain-bursting telepath in Scanners, the jingoistic one-armed military commander in Starship Troopers, and the victim of the immortal line “See you at the party, Richter!” in Total Recall. (And, no big deal, he was Jester in Top Gun.) And for the last decade, Ironside has also been voicing stealth superagent Sam Fisher in Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell series. That’s all about to change. Sarah Jones in Alcatraz -”Cal Sweeney” Teaser Images
Alcatraz is back tonight after last week’s the first taste of the latest from J.J. Abrams, but that’s old news, having already having brought you looks from tonight’s episode (“Kit Nelson”, a kidnapper focused former Alcatraz inmate return) last week. Now, Via our sister-site Criminal Complex we have for your pleasure a look at next week’s episode, titled Alcatraz “Cal Sweeney” which will feature as its villain of the week Eric Johnson, someone Smallville fans may recall, or cultists of the the defunct Flash Gordon show on the then Scifi channel.
I offered my own thought on the premiere of Alcatraz earlier this week and will be tuning in tonight to see if it’s a keeper. next week, Johnson will be playing a returned bank robber for the cast of Sarah Jones, Sam Neill, Jorge Garcia...

We recently reported that Miles Fisher (Superhero Movie) had been the first cast member to join Final Destination 5. Today Bloody Disgusting have confirmed that he is to be joined by television alumni Nicholas D’Agosto (Supernatural), Ellen Wroe (Huge) and Meghan Ory (Flash Gordon).
With further reports that an offer has also been made to David Koechner (Snakes on a Plane), it does appear that director Steven Quale is going for an older group of survivors last night, hopefully in keeping with franchise-highpoint Final Destination 2.
The Eric Heisserer (The Thing) scripted fifth installment opens with a bridge disaster and will stalk a third dimension near you in August of next year.

ABC recently premiered a new police series for the summer months called Rookie Blue. Many have compared it in concept to Southland on NBC (and now TNT). Will this one stick around long enough to see season two?
Rookie Blue revolves around five rookie cops who are plunged into world of big city policing. The ensemble cast of the drama includes Missy Peregrym (Reaper), Gregory Smith (Everwood), Eric Johnson (Flash Gordon), Ben Bass, Enuka Okuma, Travis Milne, Charlotte Sullivan, Matt Gordon, Noam Jenkins, and Melanie Nicholls-King.
The TV show debuted on June 24th to a 1.9 rating in the all-important 18-49 demographic and 7.24 million viewers. In the regular season, those numbers wouldn't be cause for celebration but, in the summer months, they're quite respectable. For the timeslot, the premiere ranked second in the demo and first in total viewers.

Before you get all up in our grill about covering this awesome looking coming of age flick you should know that first time director Derick Martini has written episodes of Flash Gordon. So there, he's got his genre cred locked down. Not that he needs it with a film that looks this good of course.
Based on the true childhood experiences of director Derick Martini, Lymelife is set in the 70’s, and is seen through the innocent eyes of 15-year old Scott Bartlett. A unique coming of age story, Lymelife explores first love, last love and the dangers of the American Dream. This hilarious, violent and sometimes tragic look at family dynamics weaves an intricate tapestry of American life during a time of drastic economic and emotional change. SAN DIEGO -- Thanks to NBC's Heroes presentation, the 2007 San Diego Comic-Con International, which took place this weekend, will be remembered as the Con at which TV shows eclipsed feature films.
The Heroes panel, which started at 12:45 p.m. Saturday and was held in the Convention Center's second-biggest room, holding about 4,000 people, hit maximum capacity almost as soon as the doors opened at 10 a.m. Fans arrived early and sat through two other presentations -- for NBC's Bionic Woman and a TV Guide panel on TV heroes -- just to hear the Heroes creators and to offer their love to the cast. Even Danny Bonaduce stood in line to ask a question. Thousands more waited in line for hours in case, by chance, some room opened up.
When it was announced that Kevin Smith would direct the first episode of spinoff show Heroes: Origins, an already electric room amped off the charts.
Television's presence was the strongest it's ever been at the Con, where the small screen's influence has been slowly growing since ABC launched Lost in 2004, previewing the pilot in a large hall that was only half full at the time. But it was those early fans that helped the show become a buzz-worthy hit, and when an unknown show called Heroes previewed in 2006 and went on to become one of the biggest new dramas of the season, the Con's launching pad status was solidified.
Shows that lined up in hopes of blasting off this year included ABC's Pushing Daisies, CBS' Moonlight, NBC's Chuck and CW's Reaper. Underscoring the importance of the Con, even Fox's 24, heading into its seventh season, made its first trip to San Diego, perhaps to shore up geek support after a less-than-stellar year.
Also whipping geeks into a frenzy was word of Lucy Lawless returning to Sci Fi's Battlestar Galactica, and Sam Jones, who played Flash Gordon in the 1980 movie, set to appear as a guest star on the channel's upcoming Flash Gordon series. The channel also announced that Farscape creator Rockne S. O'Bannon has signed on to executive produce and develop stories for a new 10-episode webisode series based on the beloved show that will run on SciFi.com.
This year, the film contingents at the Con didn't offer many standouts. The exceptions were Warner Bros. Pictures' Get Smart, with its cast in tow; Paramount Pictures' orchestration of the dual Spock casting of Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto in its next Star Trek movie; and Marvel Studios' Iron Man.
Marvel's efforts were almost a textbook example of how to make an impression at the Con. The company stoked the flames with a large mysterious crate with the words "Stark Industries" sitting on the convention floor.
