I liked it!

Warning: Spoilers
This Italian/German/American - yes, I am cheating on the American Giallo theme - giallo comes from some of the same people who made 5 Dead On A Crimson Canvas. Shot in Florence, Italy, it concentrates on Roberta Parenti (Yassmin Pucci), who was once an artist but has now settled into being a politician's wife and, if you've seen enough giallo, you know what that means. She's exploring her sexuality after being assaulted in the past. Her husband forbids her from being an artist, which leads her into the clutches of a man killing the most beautiful women in the city. And he's wearing the mask of a man within her artwork.

Directed by Giovanni Pianigiani, who wrote the story with Bruno Di Marcello, you may notice that unlike nearly every other giallo you've seen this isn't dubbed and everyone is speaking English. Dubbing is something that throws off people not used to Italian movies. A lack of dubbing conversely threw me off.

But you know what made this work for me? Joe Zaso shows up and not just to be a producer. He plays Derek, a detective with an incredibly keen sense of smell to make up for his blindness. That's the kind of character that can only exist within this genre and it's absolutely great, as is the music by Marco Werba.

While this doesn't push itself to have the Argento camera angles and Bava colors of so many modern giallo that try and tackle the look, if not the story and experience of 1970s yellow postered psychosexual murder movies, this gets the lunatic feel of those films right.

Also: I love that so many reviews are like, "This has some really gratuitous sex scenes."

Tell me you've only told people you've watched giallo without telling me.

Great Homage To Classic Giallos
djh785612 May 2008
I recently viewed Darkness Surrounds Roberta and would highly recommend it to anyone who are fans of the by gone era of classic giallos of the 60's and 70's. The film brings to mind great giallo's by Argento, Ercoli, Lenzi, Bava and Martino. These are films of a lost era and anyone who is a fan of them will appreciate this movie. It is a direct to DVD release and is certainly an independent movie. However, it was shot in Florence, Italy and has lots of violence, kinky sex, and strange events going on with a killer score. The women are smoking hot and although the script is far from perfect, the atmosphere that is created feels like the movie was released in the 70's in the classic era of giallos. It pays homage to the great giallos and does so much better then other recent releases, such as Bad Inclination, which was a major disappointment.

I would highly recommend this movie to fans of giallo who have realistic expectations of what to expect. If you are not a fan of such films, you probably will not like it, but for giallo fans, it is a welcome release in a area that is really hard to duplicate effectively. Giallos were far from perfect technical movies, but that was part of the fun. This movie is simply a surprising treat to the senses.

slow moving but bloody. a decent low budget movie.

Warning: Spoilers
i bought this movie because it was from the makers of barricade which i liked a lot. this movie is very different and i will try to explain why.

first of all its really slow. its based on old Italian giallo movies like Dario Argento and Mario bava which were slow, too. If they were trying to make it just like them, then they did it perfectly. There are a lot of conversations about taxes and building codes that make no sense and you really want to fast forward thru.

thankfully there is some good in it, too. Joe Zaso and Raine Browne from barricade are both in it and they are both pretty good. Joe plays a blind policeman which doesn't make any sense but he does all right. Raine is much sexier than normal but does not have a very big role and quickly disappears in a lame way.

the actress who plays Roberta is really hot and does a good job for the whole movie. she is also naked a lot, so fans of that will really like it.

the gory parts are good, too. its too bad there are not enough of them and they happen very fast. i was hoping for more of barricade but they are still really good. they were done by Timo Rose who did the effects for barricade and directed it.

oh yea. the music is cool too. it sounds spooky and really dramatic. sometimes it sounds a little over the top but i think it was supposed to since this is a copy of a 70s movie.

i will give this movie 6 or 7 out of 10. it has great nudity and blood but i wish there was more. the plot is kind of boring and the movie is long but i made it through it. if all old giallo movies are like this then i guess they made a perfect copy.

i think it is worth renting.

An exciting effort to reproduce classic giallo feel!
Nosfercatu9 June 2009
What a nice surprise this movie really is. Is it perfect? Nope. But as a huge fan of giallo movies by Argento, Bava, Fulci (yes he did some good ones), Martino, etc.. I can honestly say that this movie for me is a multiple re-watcher! LOVE the color palate. There is one scene inside Roberta's apartment that really captures a Suspiria type feel in terms of the color washes! The musical score by Marco Werba is PHENOMENAL and deserves so much more attention from any fan of giallo musical scores. I can't say enough about it as it fits perfectly with the characters moods and what's happening on screen. The script follows the standards set for a good giallo with it's expected twist ending, and twisted logic. It also has an certain sense of the sexual supernaturalness (is that a word?) along with the standard giallo storyline which I liked a lot. The acting is much better than most independent low to mid budget productions. And specifically in the case of lead actress Yassmin Pucci I find myself really drawn to her. She does a wonderful job and evokes a true melancholy mood inside me watching her performance. She is beautiful, sultry, sad, and above all...mesmerizing on screen. Joe Zaso plays a blind detective in an homage to Dario Argento's Cat O' Nine Tails and deserves lots of credit for injecting his own passion for the genre into this film. So if you haven't seen a good giallo in a while and want to feel that special feeling you use to get when watching them back in the day so to speak. Then I highly suggest you set the lights down and settle into the Darkness that Surrounds Roberta!

Great Dario Argento style thriller (but with a plot).
dean.aaron29 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
One thing that always upsets me with Dario Argento is his use of very poor actors and, often, no real plot or a plot that turns on twists that defy the internal rules of the universe he creates on screen.

DARKNESS SURRONDS ROBERTA however has a strong chain of logic and a style that is like the best early Argento or even the great MARIO BAVA.

The females are hot and sexy and the other performances are uniformly excellent.

There is also a great performance from the always entertaining and fun Eileen Daly.

In conclusion a very satisfying and enjoyable thriller that validates low budget film-makers and shows the sheer creativity and imagination of the team behind this movie.

Dark, clever, twisted and at times truly scary.

An excellent addition to a collection or viewing list and once you have seen this movie you will want to see more by the same team.
