Very early stop-motion that is in search of a good story.

Warning: Spoilers
"Le petit soldat qui devient Dieu" (The Little Soldier Who Became a God) is one of the earliest examples of stop-motion that you can find. Too bad the story just isn't very good. And, too bad the quality of the nitrate print is just awful.

The film begins with a little girl getting a box of toy soldiers. Then the audience is treated to the box opening up and soldiers marching about in stop-motion. Somehow one of the soldiers ends up in the river where it is picked up by MEGA-WEIRD folks. Now you CLEARLY can see that it's the Seine in Paris (the Eiffel Tower is in the distance). But, the natives look like ridiculous black-faced folks wearing cheap American Indian headdresses! Then, these ridiculous folks take a time-out from butchering someone to examine and TASTE the soldier. The boss black-Indian then declares it's a god and they all worship it! What was Cohl thinking?! Was he using crack?!

Mixed Nuts

The surviving prints of this early Emile Cohl mixed live action-animated short subject has suffered a lot of damage. What survives is absolutely charming and shows an important early phase of animation. It emphasizes the stop-motion nature of animation as toy soldiers march before a backdrop of a child's drawing of a public building -- we know it's a public building because there is a clock on its facade. Then they float down the river Seine in a big tin box, to be picked up by children made up as -- well, some sort of African natives is my guess.

The very real charm of this movie is that it maintains a child-like viewpoint, not just for its background, but in its easy acceptance of props that, for an adult, would be obviously wrong. Given its very short length -- under four minutes -- it most certainly does not bore this adult.
