Let’s face it, there’s nothing new you can do with the post-apocalyptic genre. What we can hope for now is that there’s a visual flair and/or a sincerity and dedication to the characters that will set the story apart, no matter what medium it’s in. Recently, The Maze Runner series brought about an intriguing combination of post-apocalypse and totalitarianism, Mad Max:Fury Road was pure energy on screen, and The Last of Us was an interactive masterpiece. Go North bares the most resemblance to the latter without the terrifying monsters, so slightly less interesting. The inciting incident at the core of Go North is a mystery which we don’t really discover, but it isn’t important no matter how much we might want to know. This is a character movie about finding your place at the end of civilization.

The maker of Super Size Me is going to explore the “seven deadly sins” in a new Showtime documentary series.
Oscar-nominated executive producer Morgan Spurlock will host the “dark and twisted” series, which promises to detail each of the cardinal sins through “Spurlock’s unique and extreme lens.”
“For years, I’ve wanted to do an Alfred Hitchcock Presents-style show comprised completely of non-fiction stories,” Spurlock said in a statement. “A series just as dark and twisted as anything fiction could imagine, and now I’m thrilled to have that dream come true with Seven Deadly Sins. Jared Leto's eleven-minute music video for his band 30 Seconds to Mars' new single, "City of Angels," is a strangely moving ode to Los Angeles that features a handful of his famous friends. A teary-eyed Lindsay Lohan confesses, "I've disappointed myself the most in my life," alongside Kanye West ("This city took my mother. But this city also gave me my child"), Selena Gomez ("I'm a Disney kid, people try to tell me what to do every day"), Ashley Olson ("Fame is an illusion"), James Franco, Lily Collins, Shaun White, Olivia Wilde, Corey Feldman, Alan Cumming, Steve Nash, and Juliette Lewis. The Hollywood Walk of Fame's resident Superman impersonator, Christopher Dennis (who also starred in the 2007 documentary, Confessions of a Superhero) sums it up: "Do I think I'm gonna make it in the industry? As long as I keep believing, it will happen." Deep.

The London Film Festival’s now in full swing, so Michael’s provided a handy guide to what you can still get to see over the next few days...
The 55th London Film Festival is now underway, boasting a programme that includes top-flight flicks like George Clooney’s The Ides Of March, Lynne Ramsey’s We Need To Talk About Kevin, and 360, directed by Fernando Meirelles. However, unless you’re a BFI member, a quick-off-the-mark cinephile, or an industry bigwig, it’s highly likely that you missed the small window of chance for getting tickets for these bigger films.
No need to worry, though, as many of the festival’s 300+ films haven’t yet sold out. Here are just a few notable or geek-friendly deep cuts that, at time of writing, still have tickets on sale.

1Up is a new microcinema based in Perth, Australia that is launching with a very ambitious slate of screenings this summer. So far, they’ve released their full schedule for the months of June and July that includes a film almost every night of the week, and sometimes two films.
These are movies that have played on the international festival circuit, but many have not been released yet. So this is a rare treat to still see many of them still in a theater setting, even a 20-seat microcinema like 1Up.
The summer screening series kicks off with one of the best films to come out of Australia in recent years: Stuart Simpson’s vicious throwback to ’60s B-movie madness, El Monstro Del Mar, which was reviewed on Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film last year.
Other movies that 1Up will be screening include such festival hits such as Best Worst Movie,...

Wandering around a hectic Hollywood Boulevard last night on my way to meet indieWIRE colleagues Peter Knegt and Dana Harris for an Oscar viewing party at the Egyptian, I ran into Superman himself. That would be Christopher Dennis, one of the compelling subjects from Matthew Ogens's disarmingly thoughtful 2007 documentary "Confessions of a Superhero," which I reviewed here. Like the rest of the people in the movie, Dennis is a struggling actor who dons a superhero contest and poses for photos with tourists, nudging them for tips. The movie explores his lifelong Superman obsession and the way it has continued…...

If you've been down to Hollywood Blvd. in the past then you know one of the coolest things about it was all the awesome costumed superheroes walking the streets! It was one of my favorite parts about going to Hollywood, watching them walking around a posing with tourists. If you go there now... there are no superheroes in the streets and Hollywood Blvd. has become a boring and bare wasteland of normallcy. Jimmy Kimmel always featured these street performers on his show, and a great documentary was made about these people called Confessions of a Superhero which you can watch on Hulu for free.
In June the Lapd wanted to cleanse the streets of Hollywood of these costumed vigilantes. They made a ton of arrests. The reason for the crackdown is because of complaints from both tourists and shop-owners, that the superheroes were becoming too aggressive, pestering tourist for tips.

These costumed characters have always been one of my favorite parts of the touristy part of Hollywood Boulevard. I always loved watching the ridiculous and strange costumed superheroes pose for photos with tourists near the Grauman's Chinese Theater. Jimmy Kimmel regularly featured these performers on his show, and a documentary was even made about the characters called Confessions of a Superhero (watch it on Hulu for free). In June, Los Angeles police launched an effort to clear Hollywood Boulevard of unlicensed Hollywood character impersonators, making dozens of arrests. In recent years tourists and shop-owners have complained that the costumed characters had become more aggressive and pestered some of the tourists for money/tips. I've been around the area a couple times over the Summer, and aside from one lightpole climbing Spider-man, the superheroes were no where to be seen. Archie Gips and Matthew Hunt decided to make a documentary about...

Los Angeles may be considered the film capital of the world, but what is “film” these days anyway? A new L.A-based festival has just popped up that addresses and celebrates all of the unique forms that visual storytelling can take in our new media world.
The inaugural New Media Film Festival will run the course of one weekend, June 11-13, at the Downtown Independent theater and show a mix of Internet-based short films, “webisodes,” documentaries that deal with the way media influences and is influenced by real world affairs and feature films in which new media figures as a major story element.
While the festival is strictly concerned with new media, I do want to note that there is a slight “underground” connection. While the fest was founded by Susan Johnston, the event’s Artistic Director is David Kleiler, who founded the Boston Underground Film Festival way back in 1998. Plus,...

Superheroes have been banned from Los Angeles' streets after numerous complaints were filed against them.
According to the Lapd, costumed street performers harassed visitors for tips in exchange for their services. Several actors were accused of aggressive panhandling and loitering. Approximately a dozen characters were arrested while others were cited and asked to leave Hollywood Boulevard.
For years the Walk of Fame was where everyone could see their favorite movie and comic book characters. Many actors donned costumes not only to entertain tourists but to make a living, as seen in the acclaimed 2007 documentary Confessions of a Superhero. Christopher Dennis, who has portrayed Superman for 19 years, and Joe McQueen, who has been the Incredible Hulk for 10 years, are angered and confused by the actions taken against the costumed characters. Both actors starred in the “Confessions” film, but despite their fame and experience they too will be arrested if caught wearing costumes on the streets.

Comic book characters will stay on the screen, but not in the streets
Superheroes are being asked to give up their costumed identities today on the streets of Los Angeles, according to Ktla News.
The Walk of Fame sidewalk along Hollywood Blvd. between Highland and Orange has, for years, been the site of costumed panhandling and was featured in the 2007 documentary, Confessions of a Superhero.
Characters range from popular heroes like Batman and Superman to horror icons like Michael Myers and Chucky (played, terrifyingly, by a masked midget). Some are regulars and some appear only for brief periods. Avatar's release late last year saw a rash of Na'vi while a near-perfect Michael Jackson lookalike has been dancing on his Walk of Fame star since the singer's death.
The performers skirt legality by asking tourists to "tip" them rather than charge for photos outright. Now, police officers have begun cracking down on the enterprise,...

Last week there was talk of the conglomerates behind Hulu turning the typically free product into a subscriber-based system. While we’re still crossing our fingers that “The Office” — or worse, our beloved “General Hospital”* — doesn’t go behind a pay wall, what about other sources for free movies online?
Check out Snagfilms.com, a website dedicated to providing free streaming full-length and short documentaries.
The site has a library of 950 different films to choose from, but there are a few gems I’ve seen and personally recommend. Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me is a must see movie about one man’s crusade to expose McDonald’s and America’s unhealthy addiction to fast food. There’s also Darkon, a fascinating look at the fantasy world of live-action role playing. Plus Confessions of a Superhero that chronicles the lives and motivations for the comic book characters posing for pictures on Hollywood Blvd.

In addition to Super Size Me, the partnership will bring films from the Arts Alliance's Morgan Spurlock Presents ... line of programming to Jaman. NEW YORK -- Ever wonder about those anonymous figures dressed as superheroes who hang out on Hollywood Boulevard posing for photos with tourists for tips? Filmmaker Matt Ogens apparently did, and he has turned his curiosity into the oddly affecting documentary Confessions of a Superhero. The film is playing an exclusive theatrical engagement at New York's Two Boots Theatre.
Ogens concentrates on four of these show business wannabes: Christopher Lloyd Dennis (Superman), a Christopher Reeve look-alike who claims to be the son of actress Sandy Dennis and whose obsession for the Man of Steel borders on fetishism; Joe McQueen (The Hulk), who was homeless for four years on the streets of Los Angeles before becoming a black version of the green comics character; Jennifer Gehrt (Wonder Woman), a beautiful former Midwestern prom queen and cheerleader; and Maxwell Allen (Batman), who claims to have once been a mob enforcer and who clearly still has anger issues.
The filmmaker spends some time dealing with the legal issues concerning these costumed performers and what some label as essentially panhandling, but Confessions is mainly a detailed portrait of these societal eccentrics, which, while not neglecting their obvious personal problems, is clearly sympathetic.
The film's impact is greatly aided by its subjects' highly colorful personalities and their entertaining quirks, such as Dennis' massive Superman memorabilia collection that has overrun his tiny apartment and Allen's angrily sarcastic responses to those whom he feels has not given a sufficient tip. It's not surprising that the film includes footage of him participating in one of his therapy sessions while still wearing his full Batman regalia.
