During the US Civil War, approximately 600,000 men were killed--making it by far the bloodiest war in US history. However, in this short, a group of Confederate soldiers are captured and they fight it out...in song! If only this had been done to settle the war in real life--think of the lives that could have been saved! Not surprisingly, it all comes off as a VERY weird concoction! On top of that, you have to adore listening to these hoary old songs--most of which must have been loads of fun to sing A LONG TIME AGO. Today, it just seems odd and dated...and a bit boring. The only thing I really DID like from the short was looking at all the really funny looking fake beards and mustaches. I think they were trying to look the period but mostly it looked like they randomly applied hunks of hair while they were in a pitch-black room! Not particularly enjoyable and very dated. Oddly, it was included in a DVD collection entitled "Great Old Short Subjects" by Alpha Video. I assume 'great' must mean 'free because it's in the public domain'!
