The Ben Affleck-led sequel to his 2016 crime film The Accountant has a new home as it gears up for a production start later this month.
The follow-up thriller has moved to Amazon MGM Studios after it was previously in development for many years at Warner Bros., The Hollywood Reporter has learned. THR initially reported back in 2017 that a sequel was in the works.
The action thriller is already deep into the casting process and has J.K. Simmons, Jon Bernthal and Cynthia Addai-Robinson back on the call sheet after they appeared in the original.
The move from studio to streamer took place over the course of last summer, during the actors and writers strikes, according to sources. The sequel was a priority during the heady days of the HBO Max era when the studio was developing big-name feature projects intended for its newly launched and very shiny streaming service. Once...

Ben Affleck and director Gavin O’Connor are set to reteam in thriller sequel The Accountant 2, which will reportedly start filming in the spring.

The last time we heard any news about The Accountant 2 was in September 2021 – back then, O’Connor was talking about the potential for turning the whole thing into a trilogy. It isn’t currently clear whether a third movie will happen, though O’Connor has previously said “I’ve always wanted to do three.”

Gavin O’Connor’s The Accountant brought Ben Affleck in a different kind of action role. The film ended its run with a worldwide total of $155 million and a sequel was announced, but struggled to gain traction. The Accountant starred Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff, a mathematical savant with more affinity for numbers than people. Behind the cover of a small-town Cpa office, he works as a freelance accountant for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. The film sported an impressive cast that included Jon Bernthal, John Lithgow, J.K. Simmons, Anna Kendrick and Jeffrey Tambor.
Industry insider Daniel Richtman has confirmed that The Accountant 2 is now a go with Amazon producing the film. Gavin O’Connor will return to direct with Ben Affleck reprising his role. Back in 2021, O’Connor appeared on the CinemaBlend podcast where he revealed that he had just closed the deal for the sequel.

When director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening was released back in June, co-writer and star Dewayne Perkins told Variety that he envisioned the film being the start of a franchise, one that could bring back the “same group, sprinkle in some new people. I feel like we’ve got something good, and I love the dynamic, but fresh blood always turns things up a little bit.” Now Variety has confirmed that a sequel to The Blackening is officially in development!
The Blackening didn’t exactly set the box office of fire, earning just $18.5 million… but since the movie had a budget of $3 million (plus another $2 million for marketing), that’s enough for producer MRC and domestic distributor Lionsgate to feel that it’s worth going back to for a sequel. They’re developing the follow-up with Perkins, co-writer Tracy Oliver, and producer E. Brian Dobbins.

Production on his third feature film Echo Valley took place around the month of May in Pennsylvania with topliner trio of Julianne Moore, Sydney Sweeney and Domhnall Gleeson. A thriller genre type film based on a screenplay by Brad Ingelsby (The Way Back), Pearce re-teams with cinematographer Benjamin Kracun for a third time.…...

In the 26th episode of Deadline Strike Talk — which for below the liners signifies half a year without a paycheck that hasn’t come from Uber fares or waiting tables — host Billy Ray hits on a zeitgeist theme that gets voiced a lot by people who just feel that the business isn’t as remotely as exciting or near as much fun as it was before the folly that signatories put themselves into by chasing Netflix as it became the preeminent streamer. The result has put just about every other streamer pursuit in a position of being money losers that have strained the economics, and accelerated the demise of those conglomerates’ traditional networks, and so many other things.
Ray begins by addressing the fear that informs so many moves in Hollywood, and is anathema to great creative work. Joining him are two Hollywood veterans, John Ptak and Marc Evans. While they flourished in different areas,...

Amazon MGM Studios have landed rights to Benjamin Percy’s novella “American Criminal,” with Gavin O’Connor negotiating to direct.
The film, which Hidden Pictures and NeoText will produce, follows a professional thief who, after being apprehended by an FBI agent, is coaxed into infiltrating a violent Midwestern gang with the goal of dismantling them from the inside. However, what the FBI agent doesn’t know is that the thief is also orchestrating the largest – and last – heist of his life.
O’Connor has directed a number of popular and critically acclaimed works, including “Warrior” with Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy, “The Accountant” with Ben Affleck, “Miracle” with Kurt Russell, and “Tumbleweeds,” which featured an Oscar-nominated turn from Janet McTeer. He most recently retimed with Affleck on 2020’s “The Way Back,” the story of an alcoholic basketball coach.

From “Gravity ” and “Wild” to “The Way Back” and “Jaws,” the most compelling survival movies fearlessly examine characters’ will to live, imbuing their perilous struggles with the intensely personal motivations and desires that make every person unique. These stories allow audiences to consider what specific obstacles along one person’s quest for survival and happiness say about humanity writ large. What’s more, they challenge viewers to look inward and consider what truly matters when the chips are down.
The best survival films immerse viewers in life-or-death scenarios, balancing realism and believability with slow-burn suspense. Even in lighter survival fare, such as “Swiss Family Robinson,” filmmakers have to keep up the pace and pressure to deliver the subgenre’s characteristic urgency. Some filmmakers are as well-known as their films. Think of the likes of Scorsese, Tarantino, and Spielberg — directors typically referred to solely by their last names. Others are every bit as beloved, even without the same kind of name recognition. Peter Weir is one such filmmaker, and while you won't hear casual film fans discussing "the best Weir," the odds are quite good that they love many of his films without even knowing his name.
Weir has made 13 feature films over his half-century career. Eight of them received Academy Award nominations with four of them taking home some gold. Some of Weir's films are better than others, but there's not a misfire in the bunch. Even the weakest among them is beautifully shot and filled with intriguing ideas and Weir's affection for humanity. That's great for Weir, but it's bad news for someone trying to rank his filmography. What kind...

Dan Lauria will play former Speaker of the House Thomas “Tip” O’Neill in the upcoming biopic Reagan.
He’ll play opposite Dennis Quaid, who plays the 40th president.
Dan Lauria as Tip O’Neill
In a statement, director Sean McNamara said, “He and Dennis have the chemistry needed to portray Reagan and O’Neill as two politicians who were respectful adversaries.”
In Washington, the 1980s friendship between Reagan and O’Neill has long been viewed as a contrast to recent decades, as partisan rifts have gotten more personal.
Others in the case include Penelope Ann Miller as Nancy Reagan, Mena Suvari as Jane Wyman, Kevin Dillon as Jack Warner and Jon Voight as a fictional Kgb agent who tracks Reagan over the course of 40 years. Howard Klausner and Jonas McCord wrote the script.

“King Richard” star Aunjanue Ellis is set to star in an adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel “The Nickel Boys” being set up at MGM’s Orion Pictures.
The studio has tapped RaMell Ross, an Oscar nominee for the documentary “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” to direct the film, and Ross also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Josyln Barnes.
Ellis will lead the cast alongside up-and-coming actors Ethan Herisse (“When They See Us”) and Brandon Wilson (“The Way Back”), who will anchor and lead the film’s young cast. Hamish Linklater (“The Big Short”) and Fred Hechinger will also co-star.
“The Nickel Boys” is Whitehead’s follow-up to his other Pulitzer winner, “The Underground Railroad.” Though the book is fiction, it’s based on the real story of a Florida reform school that, over 111 years, hid decades of abuse against its residents and even had bodies secretly buried on its campus.

Lionsgate has come out the winner in a bidding war over the distribution rights to director Tim Story’s horror comedy The Blackening, which made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. Deadline reported that three offers, which were “just short of 20 million”, were made by potential distributors soon after the premiere screening. Apparently Lionsgate had the most appealing offer on the table. Now they’re planning to give the film a wide theatrical release.
Story directed The Blackening from a screenplay by Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins. Inspired by a Perkins-scripted 3Peat comedy sketch that aired on Comedy Central in 2018, the film is about
a group of Black friends who go away for the weekend only to find themselves trapped in a cabin with a killer who forces them to play a game with life-or-death consequences. The idea asks a reasonable question: since it seems that...

In 2018, a sketch dropped called “3Peat Presents: The Blackening,” which cheekily explored the idea of an all-Black horror film and if one were produced, in what order would the characters die? The kernel of this idea has been pondered in movies such as Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” or the “Scream” series, but rarely ever fully explored in a narrative.
Writers Dewayne Perkins and Tracy Oliver wanted to go further with this concept in depicting a 10-year college reunion in a cabin on Juneteenth gone very, very wrong. They took their idea to director Tim Story in the hopes of plumbing horror and comedy. The result, “The Blackening,” premiered at the Toronto film festival as part of the Midnight Madness program and is already netting favorable comparison to Peele’s recent riffs on the genre.

Prior to 2018, all honorary Academy Award recipients had originated from North America, Europe, or Asia, but that changed when South American-born composer Lalo Schifrin joined the club. Now, the newest crop of special awardees includes a representative from a fifth continent: Australian Peter Weir. With a career spanning over half a century, the respected filmmaker is already a credit to his homeland when it comes to the Oscars, as he is the only one of his native countrymen to have earned multiple Best Director nominations and was the first of two (preceding George Miller) to pick up bids for directing, writing, and producing.
Along with Michael J. Fox, Euzhan Palcy, and Diane Warren, Weir is set to be recognized at the upcoming 13th annual Governors Awards. This tribute comes in honor of the 77-year-old’s status as “a director of consummate skill and artistry whose work reminds us of the...

You would think that the pair would collaborate again after that success, but they haven't written anything together since, until now. Together with Nicole Holofcener (Enough Said),…...

Ben Affleck stars in drama The Way Back, reuniting with The Accountant director Gavin O’Connor for a story that’s close to home.
The Way Back may be a Warner Bros. Pictures drama starring Ben Affleck, but the film, which focuses on a high school basketball coach battling alcoholism, also seems to be a therapeutic performance exercise for its star, who, in recent years, has made headlines for that very issue.
Gavin O’Connor directed The Way Back, reuniting with Ben Affleck, whom he directed in the acclaimed 2014 action drama, The Accountant, for which sequel plans are still in the works. O’Connor worked off a screenplay by Brad Ingelsby, who’s known from 2013’s Out of the Furnace, 2015’s Run All Night, 2018’s American Woman and The Friend, a drama that releases this weekend, starring Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson.

"Game's on the line... I want you taking that shot." Warner Bros has debuted the first official trailer for a sports drama titled The Way Back, the latest film from director Gavin O'Connor. Not to be confused with a different film titled The Way Back from 2010, about prisoners escaping across Asia. This film is about a former high school basketball phenom named Jack, now struggling with alcoholism and a tragic loss, who is offered a coaching job at his alma mater. As the team starts to win, he may have a reason to confront his old demons. But will it be enough to set him on the road to redemption? Ben Affleck stars as Jack, and he's joined by Al Madrigal, Michaela Watkins, Janina Gavankar, Glynn Turman, Da'Vinchi, and T.K. Carter. This looks like Affleck's shot at giving us his own struggling coach role to impress us. And I think the song,...
