CL-20 - Military designation for HNIW (Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane), a nitroamine based chemical propellant and explosive. Developed in the 1980's by chemists working at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in California as a more efficient and powerful alternative to RDX (primary explosive in C4). In 2017 the Office of Naval Research (ONR) began investigating HNIW as a rocket and missile fuel, with a higher oxidizer-to-fuel ratio than conventional rocket fuel it would require less propellant to be carried, therefore the rocket/missile would be lighter and faster; it also produces less smoke than conventional rocket fuel reducing rocket/missile visibility. As of 2017 it has not yet been fielded as a fuel in any weapons system, but is anticipated to be used as fuel in the Navy's new AGM-158C Long Range Anti-Ship Cruise Missile and in the Air Force's new AGM-181 Long Range Stand-Off nuclear cruise missile being developed for the new B-21 stealth bomber.
