Behold! MIWAFF Wreath Award Winning film is right here!
miwafilmfestival5 June 2020
A previous nominee of MIWAFF, Cyrus Nevshad returns with a rather sad story about the illness of an artist's granddaughter. The film successfully portrays how the power of art can raise both the spirits of seemingly hopeless people and furthermore it shows how the practicing and learning art can form bonds between people. Art also creates legacy as the main protagonist is remembered for some of his drawing even if his fortunes were not too great as an artist. On the production side the film is very well written and very well produced with no technical faults . The acting in the movie was very good and there are English subtitles for the non-French speaking audience. Overall the film had a great story and was very well produced and is a good choice for a short film.

Portraitist is a cinematically beautiful film about lost time, family dynamics, art, sickness, health, hope and so many other aspects of life. Winner of the Audience Choice award at the Kansas International Film Festival, this short was the hot topic after the screening. If you have the opportunity to see this, you will not be dissapointed.

Review of "Portraitist"
robertorinaldiskyteam17 June 2019
"Beauty is a choice" and this Franco-Luxembourgish short has married her... In the "Portraitist", in fact, the technical qualities of the direction by Cyrus Neshvad and of the photography of Jacques Raybaut and the interpretative abilities of the actors (in particular Albert Delpy, the "grandfather") are seasoned with the poetry of the script that can also be hard, as sometimes life itself can be... But the film, rather than a poetry, is a picture that slowly takes shape on the canvas and where the author's signature certainly isn't missing...

Substance over spectacle

Warning: Spoilers
A portraitist that missed his life opportunity because of a drinking problem is called upon by his estranged son to take care of his terminally ill grand-daughter. A new relationship will arise that will help the young girl find faith and a reason for living. But any such miracle demands for a great exchange and sacrifice, one which nevertheless will reveal that talent has indeed many sides... out of which some reach out beyond material fulfilment.

For its insightful exploration of its theme Be Epic! Film Fest London was delighted to have PORTRAITIST as part of its 2019 Official Selection.

Visually and Narratively Beautiful

Portraitist is a beautifully constructed drama that touches the heart with well-earned poignancy. The realistically portrayed misunderstandings between a grandfather, son, and grand-daughter use the conceit of an artist's neglect of family to power an intricate storyline and gorgeous visuals. I've seen this film three times at different festivals, and every time it's been a delight. Well worth seeing.

A very touching film in French with subtitles, about an alcoholic old man who finds purpose in cheering up his granddaughter by painting leaves & flowers on the wall behind a dead tree outside her window, so she can believe that sick living things like herself can get better. A wonderful fairy tale.

A short worth some long ones !

Warning: Spoilers
With not much words, a simple idea, and only 15 minutes, the director builds a very interesting plot, with a very nice surprise at the end (not a twist, just a pure poetic impression, really well framed).

A must to see, up to the unexpected but logical end !

Portraitist - AWARD WINNER 2020
BlackbirdFilmFest22 October 2020
Cyrus Neshvad's award winning short film, Portraitist, is both beautiful and heartbreaking - a MUST see for everyone. Portraitist reminds us that there's more to life than what the surface presents and that love for another person can reveal itself in many different ways - whether it be the love a grandfather holds for his granddaughter or a son for his father. The film also reminds us of the importance of art and that we must never underestimate the power of a portrait.
