The Sex Spa II: Body Work
Scarecrow-882 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
George (Mark Weiler) is a master masseuse working at a spa who wants to open his own but needs the capital in order to do so. His on-again/off-again lover, Kelly (Kaylani Lei), thinks it is a great idea and really believes in him, but she's concerned that raising the capital for such an enterprise will be difficult. He could try to convince a few of his current lady clients (most all of them secretly sexual conquests who can't get enough of his lovin', always returning with expectations for more!) with rich husbands to support him, but they just want him to pleasure them. Like softcore porn vet Amy Lindsay or busty Mary Carey, both of whom are quite fond of the work of his fingers. Meanwhile, Kelly engages in a torrid affair with Ryan (Billy Chappell; right before he'd start a long-term collaboration with the likes of Fred Olen Ray, Jim Wynorski, and Dean McKendrick, getting to fake bang every softcore actress working the last five years, and he's certainly a mainstay on Skinemax), while Ryan's wife has been enjoying George's "body work" on her! Then there's the spa owner, Marcia (Michelle Lay), with Kelly trying to keep George's sexual treatment of the facility's clientèle from her knowing. Loaded (and I mean, LOADED) with sex, Weiler hardly goes five minutes without a new partner in a sex scene. Sure Lei gets star treatment, but she bangs Weiler more than once (like he needed her when there's a host of lovelies as clients he gives a once over with his hands before sex is initiated) and has a nice little lesbian session with Lay, but her and Chappell share most of the lovemaking time together. But, for the most part, it is all Weiler and his sexcapades. While I certainly enjoyed Lay and Lei's sex scene (while Lei finds her a nuisance, she's more than willing to "service" Lay without much indecision), I loved every scene just about Jessica Drake appears in…she was an absolute babe. I particularly liked her bathroom scene with Chappell; the two had been committing adultery with others, but once he sets eyes on her naked body (while Lei listens on the phone), Chappell forgets Lei and takes to Drake (and it's understandable why!).

While all his scenes are staged, Weiler's character of George would have to be looked at as having one of the most "giving" of career choices; you'd think this would influence a lot of men to take up the art of massage just to get laid! While the repetitive sex scenes in softcore film can be expected, I found this film's well staged, and the "dream job" of a male masseuse is given fantasy treatment here. Drake alone gets this softcore film a decent grade. The plot is what you'd come to expect, of course, but I have seen a hell of a lot worse. Lei, to me, is a very sexy lead and Weiler (who, to his credit, has escaped being just a male prop to erotica babes and is often cast in various small supporting character parts) had, during this time, carved out a nice position as a stud to female characters in the genre…it is easy to see why they seem to have good chemistry in scenes together on screen.

Soft vs. hard

This mediocre soft porn movie for the Skinemax after-hours crowd (plus Playboy DVD) holds little interest on its own, but I found it interesting to compare to hardcore porn features of its era, given its femme cast headed by top talent recruited from the world of XXX. Oddly enough, these actresses gave far better performances in hardcore assignments, merely adequate here in corny soap opera scenes and brief (but numerous) simulated sex scenes -eleven versus the standard five of vignette porn back in the day.

Kaylani Lei stars and is sympathetic as a a masseuse, but a good girl who gives actual rubdowns, no happy endings. Her friend and masseur co-worker George (tall Mark Weiler) has no such compunctions, servicing female customers as a male prostitute. In one instance, his client dispenses with a massage and insists that George service her sexually -immediately.

The script is extremely old-fashioned and predictable, leading in dull fashion to each of them forced to make a choice, moral and romantic. The sex scenes are roughly R-rated level, lasting one or two minutes each, with the girls faking passion more than they usually do in hardcore, to make up for the absence of explicit sex shots or God forbid, any money shots.

Wicked Pictures stars Lei & Jessica Drake (latter as one of George's wealthy housewife clients) are alluring, with the great Michelle Lay well-cast and convincing as their self-centered and dominating boss, plus Mary Carey, uber-sexy as a creepy customer who leads George astray -oddly enough 16 years later she's still comically in politics running for governor of California, about as credible as Tom Laughlin aka Billy Jack when he ran for president.

Overall, this closely resembles the dozens of XXX romantic dramas directed by Nicholas Steele around this time with stars like Dee, Jassie and Lauren Phoenix. Main difference, other than the length of the sex scenes, is that Steele consistently had better production values.
