- Ramon Castillo and Marcos Estrada arrive at the tavern while Sargent Garcia and his soldiers are celebrating pay day. Garcia explains they are expecting a coach carrying 5,000 pesos to arrive that evening. Ramon and Marcos make a plan to rob the coach. Meanwhile, Bernardo and Don Alejandro arrive at the tavern. Bernardo and Ramon recognize each other, because Ramon and Don Diego were rivals in fencing tournaments in Spain. Ramon explains to Marcos that Diego is the only man who ever beat him at fencing, and so he is determined to challenge Diego to a re-match. Ramon tells Don Alejandro he is Diego's friend, so Don Alejandro invites Ramon and Marcos to the hacienda. Bernardo overhears them planning to rob the coach and tells Diego. When Ramon challenges Diego to a test of fencing skill, Diego pretends to have forgotten how to fence so that Ramon will not recognize him as Zorro later that night. However, Ramon is not fooled by the act and easily recognizes Zorro's fencing style as Diego's. Ramon goes to the tavern and announces that Diego is Zorro, but no one believes him. Ramon bets the soldiers money that he can prove Diego is Zorro if they capture him in a trap that night. Garcia bets all of his money that Diego is not Zorro, but begins to doubt himself and goes to Diego for reassurance. Diego learns of the trap from Garcia, and convinces Garcia to let him assist in the fight against Zorro to prove they are not the same person. However, Garcia is alarmed by Diego's dangerously inept fencing and locks him in the cuartel to keep him safe. Diego climbs up the chimney and fights Ramon as Zorro. Ramon and Marcos are captured while trying to escape with all the money bet by the soldiers, and Diego returns to the locked room in time to prove to Garcia that he is not Zorro.
